resents.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLARD W. Sawrne and Emit H. JUNGK, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful ltm n'ovements in Numbering-Hachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to numbering machines, and is particularly applicable to machines known as typographic or printers machines to be locked up in forms with type, and to be operated by a printing press.
@ne of the objects of this invention is to produce a numbering machine arranged so that the numbering wheels and the pawls for operating the same may be readily removed from the machine for cleaning purposes, and occasionally, for the substitution of one wheel for another, without dismantling the whole machine or disarrang ing the wheels.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simple form of mechanism for operatingt-he pawl swing.
With these and other objects in view, our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts as will be more fully de scribed and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a plan view of our typographic numbering machine in the form which we have chosen for purposes of illustration. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 looking from the left of Fig. 1. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 looking from the left of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 with the bearing covering cap thrown down to more clearly show the mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The corresponding parts are referred to both in the drawings and specification by similar reference characters.
111 the drawings, is a frame, hollowed out as shown to provide a recess in which may be mounted the usual numbering wheels 11. This frame 10 is provided with slots, as shown particularly in Fi 2, in which may be inserted the flattened ends 12, 13 of a shaft 14- on which the numbering wheels 11 are mounted. On this shaft ll is also mounted a pawl swing 15 carrying the usual pawls 16. The pawl swing moves Specification of Letters Eatent.

back and forth in the usual manner to operate the numbering wheels, all as will be understood by those skilled in the art. Detent pawls 16 are provided for each of. the numbering wheels, held in place by the usual springs 17, the unit numbering wheel being controlled by the pawl 18. The shaft 141 is held in place in the slots in the frame 10 by a removable cap 19 which, in the form we have illustrated, is hinged at 20 to the frame 10, and is held in closed position by a fastening device 20. This cap 19 preferably formed so that, when in place, it becomes a continuation of the frame 10 to add strength thereto, as well as to hold the shaft 14: in position.
Slidably mounted in the frame 10 is a plunger 21, of the usual type, which is held in its upward position by the pressure of a spring 22 extending into a recess 28 in the frame 10. The plunger 21 is provided with an over-hanging projection 24. which is provided with a slot, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, spanning the shaft 1 1-. Preferably the aws of this slot are so arranged that when the plunger 21 is pushed downward until the top thereof is level with the printing surface of the type of the wheels 11, the upper wall of the slot contacts with the shaft 1 1 to provide a limiting stop for the plunger. Likewise when the pressure is removed from the plunger 21, the spring 22 forces the plunger upward until the lower wall of the slot in the ovenhanging projection contacts with the bottom of the shaft 1 1 to provide a stop.
C-n one end of the pawl swing 15 we pro vide a projection arranged to engage with the walls of the slot in the projection 2 1, so that the vertical movement of the plunger 21 will be converted into a rotary oscillating movement of the pawl swing 15. its a convenient form for manufacturing purposes, we construct this projecting member of the steel blocks or pins 25 riveted into the end of the pawl swing 15, although, of course, it will be understood that any other form of construction may be used.
The shaft 14 will usually be provided with a longitudinal groove to cooperate with a drop cipher construction of the usual type, such as is illustrated in the patent to l l icht No. 391,289, which groove, as will be understood by those skilled in the art, must be 3,,
held in definite position in relation to the frame 10 in order that the drop cipher will operate at the proper time. It is, therefore, desirable that in placing the shaft 14; with the wheels thereon in the frame 10, means shall be provided by which it will be assured that the shaft can be entered in its place only when this groove is in proper relation with the frame. To this end, and as a convenient means for accomplishing this purpose, we cut the slot for the end 13 of the shaft 14, so that it intersects the socket 23 in which the spring 22 operates, and shape the end 13 so that it can be entered into the slot in the frame 10 only when the longitudinal groove in the shaft is in proper relation to the frame 10. As will be seen more clearly by an inspection of Fig. 5, the end 13 is cut away to permit the admission of the end 13 into its groove when the parts are in the position shown inv Fig. 5, or to prevent such entrance if the shaft is turned over, as the longer portion of the end 13 cannot pass the spring 22.
As will be seen by an inspection of Fig. at, the removal of the fastening device 20 permits the cap 19 to be swung downward on its hinge 20, so that the shaft 14:, carrying the wheels and pawl swing, may be removed bodily sidewise from the frame 10 without disturbing the relation of the numbering wheels or the pawl swing. This provides an easy and ready method by which the wheels may be removed for cleaning purposes and for returning them to their position without disturbing their relation. The shaft 14 also serves as a lock to hold the plunger 21 in the frame 10 when the shaft is in place.
It will be understood that many other forms may be used in place of our swing cap 19. For instance, separate bearings might be provided over the ends 12, 13 respectively, and these hearings may be removable bodily from the frame 10 instead of being hinged thereto, although we prefer the latter form, since by this means the cap is always connected to the frame and in no danger of being misplaced.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
