Be it known that I, Ln GRAND PARISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at- New York, in the county of New York and State of N ew York, have invented certain f new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-l4`ireBox Construction, of which the following is a speciication.
rlihis invention relates to the provision of an improved arrangement of circulating` tubes in a locomotive tire-box whereby the circulation between the different parts of the water walls of the ireebox is greatly increased in volume, such arrangement cooperating with means whereby the rapidity of the flow of the water circulating through the tubes is increased and even and uninterrupted in character. Such arrangement of parts is primarily intended to obtain greater efficiency of the lire-box, particularly with reference to the fuel consunied. A further object of the invention 1esides in so constrllcting the parts, that they may be readily applied to locomotives of standard construction and may be easily removed for purposes of repair or cleaning. My invention further contemplates the provision of tubes having the advantages and functionall characteristics described but which do not interfere withinsertion and removal of the arch bricks supported on said tubes, nor with the inspection and repair of the staybolts, flue sheet or fines.

On inspection of the drawings, particularly Fig. l thereof, it will be seen that the tire-box is of standard construction and com* prises an inner tire-box composed of a tube sheet l, side sheets 2, a back sheet 8, a crown sheet t, and an outside fire-box composed of a throat sheet l, side sheets Qa, a hacksheet 3a and a cover or top sheet 4, The water spaces at the front, sides and rear of the tire boX are closed by the usual mud ring 5.
The back sheets are connected together by the staybolts 6, while the cover and crown l sheets are connected by the radial staybolts 7. In the front of the tire-box is the usual flue sheet 13 in which the rear ends of the lines l2 are fastened.
Referring now to those features of my invention which are departures from the usual construction, it will be noted that l provide two rows of tubes 8 and 8 connecting thel front and rear water spaces and iuclining upwardly from the front to the rear. The tubes 8 are circulation tubes and the lower tubes serve as circulation. tubes and also support the arch bricks S in such manner that the gases in the tire-box do not come directly in contact with the relatively cool surfaces of the tubes Si* so that the combustion of said gases is not retarded. rthere are preferably four tubes to each row, and the tubes of one row are located directly below, that is, in substantial alincuieut with the tubes of the other. This construction will be clear from inspection of Fig. 2 which is an end cle 'ation of half of the lire box. The chief object in providing two rows of tubes is to increase the amount of circulation between the ditlerent parts of the water spaces, and in order to secure a more rapid and uninterruptecil flow through the tubes, l provide the following structure which cooperates with said tubes in securing the desired results.
Arranged in the rear water space and detachably secured to the vertical pairs of tubes of the upper and lower rows of tubes are four delivery tubes llwhich are adapted to be inserted and removed through openings in the back sheet 3 and are provided with flanged cover plates l5 adapted to cover said opeiiings and be secured to the sheet 3a by means of studs l5 und the stay bolts (3, The delivery tube castings each have a passage la@ which opens into a larger passage 14". A tube of lower row 8 communicates with each passage la@ and a tube of the upper row Sa conununicates with the passage lil, the capacity ot said latter passage being substantially that of two tubes. The delivery tubes extend upwardly and the ends thereof lie substantially at the level of the normal water line of the lire-box. The. currents of water and steam which are caused by the action of the heat in the lireboX to flow upwardly and rearwardly through the tubes are not discharged into the rear wall space but are delivered iu the space above the crown sheet and are thereg Lossless tore not impeded or obstructed by the Volume of water normally lying in the rear water space above the points at which the tubes S and 8a communicate therewith. Greater rapidity and continuity of the fiow through the tubes is thus obtained, and this advantage in connection with the greater volume of circulation obtained by the provision ot the two sets of tubes tends to lend etfectiveness to the lire-bof; without increasing the amount or fuel consumed.
