CLOTH-CUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1913.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Serial No. 753,242.
1 '0 all whom it may concern ie it known that I, HARVEY L. Yonno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of ldontgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Cutting Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cloth cutting machines and more particularly to an attachment therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for cloth cutting machines which enables the cutter to cut a pocket slot in the cloth, or a slot which. does not extend to the edge of the cloth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cloth cutter with my improvement attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 is a section on the line a.a, of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the attachment; Fig. 5 is a section on the line b?) of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a view of a portion of a garment, with a pocket slot therein, and showing the class of work in which the invention is used.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
The cloth cutter, to which my attachment may be applied, may consist of any of the well known types, in which a vertically reciprocating cutting knife is adapted to be guided through a plurality of layers of cloth. As illustrated in the present instance, the cutter consists of a base plate 1 provided with chamfered edges which enables said base plate to slide easily under the cloth. Said base plate 1 is also provided with rollers 2 which enable the cutter to slide easily over the cutting table while the front portion 3 thereof may be a separate hinged portion to enable the base plate to ride over the inequalities in the surface of the table. Extending upwardly from the base plate 1 is a guide standard 4, the upper end of which is provided with a horizontal member 5 to which a motor 6 is attached by means of a connection 7. Said connection 7 is provided with a handle 8 by means of which the cutter is manipulated. Mounted in the guide standard 1 is a vertically reciprocating knife 9 which is connected to the motor by any well known means and which is adapted to convert rotary into reciprocating movement.
In the ordinary operation of the device in severing along lines which extend to the edge of the cloth, the base plate 1 is guided under the cloth and the knife 9 and guide standard iare guided through the cloth. As the guide standard at follows the knife during this cutting operation, the knife is prevented from making cuts through to the edge of the cloth, such as is shown at 10 in Fig. 6. To enable the knife to enter the cloth from the top and to eliminate the guide standard passing through the cloth, the following device is provided which guides the base plate 1 over the cloth with the cutting knife extending down through and into the cloth. 11 represents a base plate provided with side extensions 12 having bosses 13. Extending upwardly from the bosses 18 are standards 1 1 upon which a triangular vertically sliding overhung frame 15 is mounted. Said frame 15 is provided with bosses 16 which receive the standards 1 1. The frame 15 is provided with a boss 17 which receives a screw 18 extending through the base 1 of the cutter. The screw 18 is removably mounted in the base 1 and is provided with a winged nut 19 by means of which the cutter is suspended from the frame 15. To prevent the cutter turning on the screw 18, the frame 15 is provided with a boss 20 having a dowel pin 21 which enters a suitable opening in the base 1. The cutter is suspended from one side above the base plate 11 by the standards 1e and frame 15 and is overhung therefrom.
hen the cutter is used with the attachment in cutting pocket slots, a cutting knife 9 is provided which is of a length suflicient to extend through the base 1 and to reach down to the base 11 during the reciprocation of the knife. The distance from the center of the base plates 1 and 11 and the knife 9 to the standards 14- determines the distance to locate the pocket slot from the edge of the cloth. The frame 15, and the cutter carried thereby, may be raised and lowered by a pinion 22 in mesh with teeth 23 on one of the standards 1 1. The pinion 22 is mounted in a pocket 21 in the frame 15 and is attached to a shaft 25 provided with a handle 26. By rocking the handle 26, the
cutter may be elevated and lowered. When it is desired to cut a pocket slot 10, the cutter is placed in an elevated position by the handle 26, and is then positioned with the knife over one end of the slot. The motor is then started and the knife is gradually lowered into the cloth by the handle 26. When said cutter has been lowered to a point I where the knife 9 will reach the base plate 11 during its reciprocating movement, it is manipulated by the handle 8 to sever the desired out. After the out has been made, the knife is extracted from the cloth by elevating said cutter by means of the handle 26.
Having described my invention, I claim,
1. In a device of the type specified, a base member, vertical standards mounted on said base member, a vertically movable overhung 7 frame slidingly mounted on said standards,
one of said standards being provided with gear teeth, a pinion in mesh with said teeth and mounted in said frame, means for rotating said pinion, and a cloth cutter attached to said frame.
2. In a device of the type specified, a base member, vertical standards mounted on said base member, a vertically movable overhung frame slidingly mounted on said standards, means for elevating and lowering said frame, a cloth cutter detachably connected to said frame, and a dowel pin ext-ending from said frame and received by said cloth cutter.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
