To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. LINDE- KUGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vellington, in the count of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Shockers, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. p
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for harvesting machines and more particularly to a grain shocker adapted for use in connection with a binder and my object is to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which is very efficient and useful in operation.
A further object of the invention resides in providing an improved extensible deck adapted to conduct the bundles of grain from the conveyer leading from the binder to the dumping apparatus.
Another object of the invention resides in providing an improved means for the operation of this aforesaid deck and a still further object resides in providing an improved dumping apparatus and operating means therefor.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an opposite side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. Il is a rear end elevation of the device. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the deck. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking bolt for the dumping member. Fig. S is a similar view of a portion of the means for operating the deck; and Fig. 9 is a section through the supporting arm of the three-armed wheel, looking upwardly and disclosing the pawl and ratchet arrangement between said arm and the wheel thereon.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates ,a frame of the usual or any preferred type used for shockers and mounted at one end thereof is the elevator frame 2, a portion of which is inclined upwardly toward the rear portion of the frame 1, said frame 2 having operatively mounted therein the endless carriers 3 and 4. The carrier 4 is adapted to be disposed in connection with the delivery chute of a binder (not shown) and a main drive shaft 5 having a combined ground and drive wheel 6 at the one end thereof, is provided with a gear 7 at the opposite end of the same which meshes with a pinion 10 carried on a stub shaft 11 on the frame l. Also mounted on the stub shaft 11 is a sprocket 12 over which extends a chain 9, said chain being also extended over the sprockets 13 and 14 carried respectively on the ends of the lower roller of the carrier 3 and the rearward roller of the carrier f1. From this construction, it will be seen that as the drive shaft 5 is caused to rotate, the carriers 3 and 1 will be simultaneously operated and various clutch mechanisms may be provided in connection with the operating means for these carriers, if desired. While the drive wheel 6 supports the frame 1 on its outer side, the inner side of said frame is adjustably supported on the frame of the binder.
The upper end of the carrier 3 leads to a platform 15 or what is known in this art as a deck, the same being pivotally mounted on a framework 1G supported on the rear end of the frame 1 and an arm 17 extending from the rear or pivotal edge of the deck is connected by a link or rod 18 to a bell crank lever 19 pivotally mounted on the framework 16. This bell crank lever 19 is connecte/d by an additional link or rod 20 which extends longitudinally of one side of the frame 1, to an additional bell crank lever 21 pivotally mounted on the forward end of the frame 1 and it will thus be seen that by the operation of the latter' bell crank lever, the deck or platform 15 may be readily swung on its pivot.
The outer or free edge of the platform or deck 15 is inclined rearwardly toward the pivotal edge of the same, the purpose of which will, be hereinafter and more particularly described, and slidably mounted in guide-ways 21 on said deck is an extension 22, the latter being disposed on the under face of said deck and having its outer free edge inclined forwardly and opposed to the inclination of the free edge of the deck proper 15. This extension 22 which is provided with the arms 23 is limited in its outward movement by providing the free ends of said arms with downwardly curved portions adapted to engage the guide-ways 21 and a yoke or the like 24 has the arms thereof pivotally connected to the under face of this extension. The -base or inner end of the yoke member 24 is pivotally connected to an arm 25 which is fixed on a shaft 26 which is in turn rotatably mounted on the frameework 16 and an additional arm 27 fixed on said rotatable shaft is connected by means of a link 28 to a bell crank lever 29. This bell crank lever is pivotally carried on the one side of the frame 1 and connects with an additional bell crank lever 30 pivotally mounted on the forward end of the frame, said latter bell crank lever having` a handle or the like mounted thereon whereby it can be readily operated. lt will be appreciated that by operating this latter bell crank lever, the extension 22 of the deck 15 may be readily disposed to its contracted or extended position.
Rotatably mounted on the rear end of the frame 1, below the deck 15, is a transverse shaft 31 which has mounted thereon a funnel-shaped receptacle or dumping member 32 and mounted centrally of the dumping memberl is a division wall or the like 33. Pivotally mounted on the frame 1 just forward of the shaft 31, is a `bell crank lever or the like 34, one arm of which extends above the frame and is provided with a friction roller 35 to receive thereon the forward end of the dumping member 32 and the opposite arm of said bell crank lever is disposed below the frame l and has linking connection with a pivoted lever 36 at the forward end of the frame 1. Also pivotally mounted on the frame 1, about centrally thereof is a spring held locking pawl or the like 37 which is adapted to engage the forward end of said dumping member 32 when disposed in its normal position. and said pawl is also linked in connection with said lever 36. Thus when the lever is swung in one direction, the pawl 37 is removed from its effective engagement with the forward end of the dumping member 32 and the bell crank lever 34 is simultaneously swung on its pivot to force the forward end of said dumping member upwardly, The dumping member is held in its normal horizontal position on the frame 1, by means of spring members 38 coiled about the shaft 31 and engaged with the dumping member and the frame 1, and 1 have provided a further means for swinging the dumping member 32 to a greater degree than is possible through the medium of the bell crank lever 34. To this'end, the one end of the shaft 31 is provided with a crank arm 39 and an additional shaft 40 rotatably mounted on the frame 1, is also provided `with a crank arm 41 at one end thereof. These crank arms 39 and 41 are connected by means of a linking member 42 and the shaft 40 is provided with a sprocket 43. Extending over this sprocket 43, is a chain 44 which also extends over a sprocket 45 loosely and slidably mounted on the drive shaft 5, said latter sprocket being' provided with a clutch face 46 on the one side thereof. An additional clutch face 47 which is carried on the shaft 5, and adapted to rotate therewith, is also adapted to have the clutch face 46 engaged therewith, a spring 48 being encircled about said shaft 5 and engaged with the sprocket 45 to normally force the latter in its effective position. Also pivotally mounted onthe forward end of the frame 1, is an additional bell crank lever 49, the one end of which has a yoke like portion 50 formed thereon, .which is suitably engaged with the clutch face 46 e on the sprocket 45 and the opposite end of this bell crank lever 49 is linked in connection with the lever 36 by the same means which connects the latter with the pawl 37 and bell crank lever 34. The tendency therefore, of the spring 48 is to force the sprocket 45 into its effective position to be rotated with the shaft 5, but the normal position of the bell crank lever 49 will dispose said sprocket 45 to its ineffective position, but as soon as the lever 36 is swung on its pivot to release the engagement of the pawl 37 with the dumping member 32, this sprocket 45 will be effectively disposed and caused to rotate with the shaft 5. The rotation of this sprocket 45 with the shaft 5, will cause the shaft 40 to be rotated which will correspondingly oscillate the shaft 31 in its bearings and thereby throw the dumping member 32 to its most effective dumping position. Upon the return movement of the crank arm 41 the dumping member will be swung to its normal position aided yby the spring members 38 and as it is thrown to its initial. position, the same will be again locked into engagement with the locking pawl 37.
Als the bundles of grain are conducted from the carriers 3 and 4 to the deck 15, the same are adapted to drop to the dumping member 32 which, as stated above, is somewhat funnel-shaped. The inclination of the free edge of the deck 15 rearwardly corresponds with the inclination of that portion of the dumpingmember 32 nearest said deck and thus the one side of the dumping member 32 may be filled prior to the filling of the other side thereof. When the one side of this dumping member farthest from the deck has been completely filled, the exten sion 22 is disposed to its retracted position and thus the bundles which are then disposed on the deck, will be dropped into the opposite side of said dumping member 32. As this latter side of the dumping member inclines in an Opposite direction, to the opposite side, it will be appreciated that the inclination of the free edge of the deck proper, which is inclined in an opposite di rection to the free end of the extension QQ, will correspond with this latter inclination of the dumping member to aid in eectively dropping the bundles therein.
I have also provided a means for preventing the shock from dumping promiscuously as the dumping member is thrown to its effective position and to this end, I provide a pair of arms 50 which are carried on a crank shaft or the like 5l, which crank shaft is oscillatingly mounted in bearings 52 on the one side of the dumping member 32. These arms 50 are adapted to extend across the upper portion of the dumping member and are limited in their upward swinging movement by means of a stud or limiting arm 53, while a coil spring member 54 is engaged at its one end with said c 'ank shaft 51 and at its opposite end to the shaft 31. From this construction, it will be seen that said arms 50 will be yieldingly held in both their closed and open positions. Also mounted on the frame l to the one side of the shaft 3l, is a supporting arm or the like 55, the upper end of which has rotatably mounted thereon a three-armed wheel or the like 56,said arms being curved laterally and downwardly toward their outer ends and adapted for disposal in the path of the arms 50, when the latter are raised and the dumping member is being operated. A ratchet 57 is mounted on the arm 55, immediately below the wheel 56 and said wheel carries thereon a spring held pawl 58 adapted to coperate therewith. This pawl will allow the wheel to readily rotate in one direction and one of the arms 50 has mounted thereon a roller 5S) which is adapted to contact with said arms as the dumping member is operated. In describing the operation of these arms, it will be assumed that the dumping` member 32 is in its most fective dumping position and the arms 50 are in their open positions, and also that one of the arms of the wheel 56 is disposed in the path of the arms 50. It might be here stated that these arms 50 are opened to this position by the bundles of the shock, as the same are dumped from the dumping member and the machine moved forward. Upon the disposition of the dumping member to its initial position, the roller 59 will contact with the arm of the wheel in its path and cause said wheel to be rotated and when said dumping member has assumed its proper position, another arm of the wheel will be disposed across the path of the arms 50, but between the same. When said dumping member is again lowered to its dumping position, the roller 59 will contact with the last mentioned arm of this wheel and in view of its 4particular shape, will cause said arms 50 to be closed, swinging the crank shaft 51, and thereby prevent the bundles of the shock from heilig dumped proiniseuously from the dumping member 3Q. As the machine is moved forward, however, the bundles, as stated above, will cause the arms 50 to be again opened and upon the return of the dumping member to its initial position, the arms 5() and the armed wheel 56 will be acted upon as described above. Thus these arms 50 may be said to be automatically operated.
It must here be stated that the bundles of grain are delivered to the conveyor 4, with the heads to the rear and in order to turn the same so that said bundles will be carried up the conveyor 3, with their butts to the rear, I provide turning hooks for the purpose (not shown).
From the foregoing` description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided an improved grain shocker which is simple and durable in. construction` comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eilicient and useful in operation.
l/Vhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changesl in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing` any of the principles of the invention.
The levers 21, 30 and 3G may, if desired, be connected to an operating means on the binder (not shown) whereby the operator may have complete control of the machine at all times.
I-Iaving thus described this invention, what I claim is l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a dumping member pivotally carried on said frame at the rear end thereof, said member being provided with a central division wall to provide a pair of compartments therein, and means for the operation of said dumping member; of a deck pivotally carried on said frame above said dumping member, the outer free edge ofsaid deck being immediately over one compartment of said dumping member when the deck is disposed to its operative position, means to control the pivotal movement of said deck on the frame,
a slidable extension for the deck to project over the other compartment of said dumping member when said extension is operatively disposed, means fo-r the manual operation of said extension, and means to supply material to the deck.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a dumping member pivotally carried on said frame at the rea-r end thereof, said dumping member having the sides thereof forwardly converging, a central division member carried on said dumping member to provide a pair of compartments therein, and means for the operation of said dumping member; of a deck pivotally carried on said frame, above the dumping member to project transversely of the frame when disposed to its operative position, the outer free edge of said deck converging rearwardly toward the pivotal edge thereof and designed to project over one compartment of said dumping member when said deck is operatively disposed, a slidable extension for the outer end of said deck, the outer free edge thereof converging forwardly toward the pivotal edge of said deck and arranged to project over the other compartment of said dumping member when said extension is operatively disposed, means to control the pivotal movement of said deck o-n the frame, and additional means tocontrol the sliding movement of the extension on said deck.
3. 1n a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a deck pivotally carried thereon, and means for disposing said deck to its operative and inoperative position; of a dumping member pivotally carried on the frame below said deck and adapted to receive the contents of the latter, spring means to normally dispose said dumping member to its horizontal position, a pivoted lockingl pawl carried on the frame below the forward end of said dumping member and adapted to engage the forward end of the latter to retain the same in its horizontal position, means to dispose said locking pawl to a position out of engagement with Athe dumping member and simultaneously dispose the latter to a partially dumped position, and additional means operated by the last referred to means for disposing said dumping member to its full dumped position, said latter means being also adapted to return said dumping member to its initial position.
4i. ln a device of the class described, the combinatio-n with a frame, a dumping receptacle pivotally carried thereon, and means to supply material to said dumping receptacle; of spring means to normally 'dispose said dumping receptacle to a horizontal position on the frame, a pivoted locking pawl carried on said frame below the forward end of the dumping receptacle and adapted to engage said forward end of the latter to lock the same in its horizontal posit-ion, means to dispose said locking pawl to a position out of engagement with the dumping receptacle, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the frame below said dumping receptacle, one arm of said bell crank lever being provided with a roller at its free end for engagement with the lower face of said dumping receptacle, means connecting the opposite arm of said bell crank lever with the operating means for said locking pawl, whereby to partially dump the receptacle simultaneously upon the disengagement of the locking pawl therewith, and additional means cooperating with the operating means for said locking-pawl to dispose said dumping receptacle to its full dumped position.

In a device ofthe class described, the combination with a frame, and a dumping member pivotally mounted thereon; of spring means cooperating with said dumping member to normally dispose the same to a horizontal position on the frame, a pivoted locking pawl carried on said frame below the forward end of the dumping member and adapted for engagement with said forward end of the latter to lock the same in its horizontal position, means for disposing said locking pawl out of engagement with said dumping member, means carried on said frame under the dumping member having cooperation with the latter and with the pawl operating means for simultaneously disposing said dumping member to a partially dumped position upon the disengagement of the pawl therewith, and additional means cooperating with said dumping member and also with the pawl operating means for disposing said dumping member to its full dumped position, said latter means being also adapted to return said dumping member to its initial position.

In a device of the class-described, the combination with a frame, a dumping member pivotally carried on the rear end thereof, spring means for normally disposing said dumping member to a horizont-al position on the frame, a pawl'pivotally carried on the fame below the forward end of the dumping member and adapted to engage said forward end of the latter to lock the same in its horizontal position on said means whereby to cause said dumping member to be disposed to a partially dumped position simultaneously with the disengagement of the pawl therewith, and additional means coperating with portions of said dumping member and also with the aforesaid pawl operatingl means for disposing said dumping member to its full dumped position, said latter means being also adapted to return said dumping member to its 10 initial position.
