Description

G. P. BISH C.
ROOF 0R WALL RING.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 1913.

UNITED STATES GEORGE FREDERIG IBISHOPRIG, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ROOF OR WALL COVERINGu.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 4, 1913.
Serial No. 771,707.
To all whom 1' t may camera Be it known that I, Gnonon FnEnEnIo BISIIOPRIG, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roof or \Vall Covering, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roof or wall covering and the objects of the invention are to reduce the cost of construotion of a roof or wall, the time necessary to place the same in position and generally to provide a simplified form of weatherproof covering which may be rapidly apphed with unskilled labor at minimum cost.
More particular objects of the invention are to enable the sheathing usually placed on the rafters of a roof to be dis ensed with and to provide an improved met 0d of supporting and applying ready or manufactured roofing. and it consists essentlally of ready or manufactured roofing material formed in strips or shingles adapted to be laid overlapping each other, the underside of said strips or shingles having reinforcing means such as laths adapted to support the same in position from the rafters or the like, all as hereinafter more fully set forth and described in the accompanying specification and drawing.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the roof embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the strips or shingles. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. l is an enlarged sectional detail through a few shingles.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a strip of ready or manufactured roofing or like covering material cut substantially in the shape of a shingle. A variety of materials may be used for the purpose, for instance any of the well known ready or manufactured roofings formed from asbestos felt. paper or asphalt or the like.
The form of material I have illustrated in detail in Fig. 4 comprises a foundation layer 10 of paper or asbestos felt, an upper layer 11 of asphalt or other suitable adhesive material with or without a coating of sand. The strips or shingles A are, when lllld, ll(lllpte(l to overlap each other and are provided with reinforcing or supportin means in the form of laths B which exten longitudinally of the stripor shingle. These laths are provided only on the portion exposed on the underside and are adapted to rest on the rafters C or the like. In the embodiment illustrated, two parallel laths are provided on the underside near one edge and spaced a short distance apart. the outermost lath being a distance from the edge of the strlp substantially equal to the distance between the laths. The laths are held in position on the shingle by suitable means and I find it desirable to combine the means for holding the laths in position with means which will give additional protection to the roof. To this end I provide a coating 12 of asphalt or the like on that portion of the underside of the strip or shingle along .which the lath extends so that the laths or like istrips will be embedded in said asphalt while lot.
In constructing or laying a roof or wall according to the present invention, the first row of strips or shingles A is laid at the end of the rafters so that the unreinforced portions 13 of the strips or laths will project beyond the end of the rafter to form a strip. The laths B are nailed or otherwise secured to the rafters. The projecting rear portion 14 of the strips or shingles A will form a straight line and guide for the next row of strips or shingles. the portions 13 of which will overlap the reinforced portions of the first row. This operation will be completed until the whole roof is laid.
It will be seen that when finished the underside of the roof will present a series of parallel strips or laths securely fastened to the rafters and taking the place of the sheathing at present necessary, while the outer part of the roof will present a surface of overlapped shingles and ready roofing n'iaterial adapted to effectually resist the weather.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A shingle for the purpose specified comprising a 'strip of roofing material hav- Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
ing parallel reinforcing means attached to smd strip on the underside near one end.
2. A roofing shingle for the purpose specified comprising a strip of roofing material having a layer of asphalt on the underside and reinforcing strips embedded in the asphalt a,d;jacer"' one end.
