Description
@diritti hm CYRUS CHAMBERS, JR., OF PHILADELPHIA, IENNSYLVANI.A
' Letters Patent No. 108,880, dated November 1, 1870 IMPROVEMENT IN srrrcK-MAcrnNEs.
The Schedule referred to ln these Letters Patent and making part Aof Lhn um,
`To all 'whom may concern i Be it known that I, Crans CHAMBERS, Jr., of
APhiladelphia, in the State ot Pennsylvania, have in i erence in both figures.
My invention relates to the brick-machine patented by me October G, 1863, in which the clay, after being tempered in a cylindrical chamber, is driven, by a conical screw,'through a tapering chamber, former, and die, and is received in a continuous bnr upon an endless belt, preparatory to its division into bricks.
l1n this machine, it is of great importance thatthe clay should be lreld so firmly by the sides ol'thertapering case, as to be prevented from turning or revolving in the case, so vthat the whole power of the conical screw shall befreserved for the propulsion ot' the clay throughthe former and die.
It is also essential to the perfect working of the ruachine, that the bar' of olayshould emerge from the die with smooth, unbroken edges, and with a surface even and plain, but not so glazed or polished by the inner surface of the die as to render it a bad absorber :ind radiator of heat, and interfere with t-lre fi'ee escape of 'moisture from the interior ot' the brick.
In my patent of October 6, 1863, I described a i method of preventing the turning ot the clay in the through the ease, former and die, while ob'viating the excessive smoothness of surface which would retard the drying of the bricks, and produce checking and. cracking in drying and burning.
'My improvements consist in substituting for the checkered surface vheretoforeY given to the interior ot'- the tapering case, longitudinal corrugatious or flutes, said tintes being ratchet-shaped, with the short and steep side presented toward the resistance, so as to otler the greatest obstruction to the rotation of the clay, while present-ing none to its longitudinal move ment.
My improvements fnrtlrer consist in inolosing tho screw-ease, former, and die, with a jacket of steam, for the purpose of heating them, whereby the clay is caused to slide mrrelr more freely on their interior surfaces, in consequence of the breaking up ofthe adhesion between said surfaces and the moving mass of clay.
he heat in the die converts the water in the super'- eial stratumy of the clay into vapor, which escapes from the bar-"as this issues from the die, thus breaking up the close glazed surface which it would other` wise have, facilitating the drying of the bricks, and preventing much ot' the checking and cracking which occur in drying and burning under ordinary conditions.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my receiving it-s steam through pipe Q, ar'rd'diselrar'ging the condense water through pipe Q'.
Having thus i'rrlly described my iuventiorr,
tVlrat I- claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paten rsil. In a brick-machine, constructed andoperating as described, the screw-arse A, tinted or corrugated upon its interior surface, substantially in the marrner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the steamjacket I, and corrugated screw-ease A, in the manner and fr the purpose described.
3. The combination and arrangement of the steamjacket K, and the former E and die D, in the manner and for the purpose stated.
' The' above specification of my said invention signed and witnegsed at Philadelphia, this 27th dayv of J uly,
OYRUS CHAMBERS, JR.
Witnesses WILLIAM Mnnnnsrrr, TnoBwALD Gua. Dmono.
