To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM PARKER y GIBSON, a citizen of the United States. and I VVILIJAM HENRY Ross, a subject of King George V of England, both being'residents I of Radnor Works, Strawberry Vale, Twicki enham, London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Actuating Trip-Release. Devices for Fire-Resisting Curtains, of which th'e following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanism for actuating trip release devices for fire resisting curtains and the like.
Broadly means to wind fire resisting curtains on drums or barrels and to hold them in a raised position by means of a pawl or detent which latter, in the case of emergency, is withdrawn from the curtain so as to allow it to fall by its own weight are well known.
The present invention consists of means tively operated by a rock-shaft or the like by operating handles from a distance and from a plurality of points such for example at each side of a parting wall or partition.
According to the form of the invention shown there is combined with a draw-rod or the like which may be a cord, which is connected to the trip device, a sliding cam plate that engages a member connected to said draw-rod in such manner that on the cam plate being displaced the rod or the like is also displaced in a direction to operate the trip release device.
Preferably the draw-rod is connected to an arm which is rigidly secured to a rockshaft that extends through a parting wall, said rock-shaft having a plurality of arms disposed one at each side of the wall and each arm is adapted to be operated by a sliding cam plate to rock the'shaft, thereby displacing the draw-rod in a direction to operate the trip release device.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is .a sectional elevation of one form of mechanism according to this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 show in elevation and plan respecl tively a trip release device for fire resisting curtains.
At each side of a parting wall A. drawrods B are provided which are connected to the trip release device to be hereinafter described. The lower ends of the rods B are pivoted to the free ends of two arms B which are rigidly mounted on a rock-shaft C that extends through the wall and is carried in suitable bearings provided in wall boxes D arranged at each side of the wall. The wall boxes D are cast with projecting portions D which are grooved so as to form a slide. Mounted in the grooves are sliding cam plates E having openings E the upper sides E of which are inclined. These plates E are connected to handles F located in the boxes D. The arms B extend through the openings E in the cam plates and lie in the path of the inclined upper sides E. It will be seen therefore that if either of the handles F be drawn away from the wall the cam plates E willdepress the arms B and thereby displace the draw-rods B. Again it will also be seen that owing to the arms B being rigidly mounted on the shaft C both the arms will be depressed when one sliding cam plate is drawn away from the wall. In this way two independent trip release devices may be actuated simultaneously from either side of the wall.
An example of trip release device for fire resisting curtains is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The rods B are connected to bell crank levers M which latter are connected by means of rods M to bell crank levers N which'in turn are connected to pivoted hook members 0- 1. Means for releasing a pair of rolling fire resisting curtains on opposite sides of a partition including, in combination, a latch a partition including in combination, a latch for retaining each of the curtains, means 0peratively connected together for holding and simultaneously releasing each of said latches, means connected with said last named means including Vertical rods, B, B, for actuating said latch holding and releasing means,
means operatively connecting both said rods B. B, at their lower ends including arms B, B, and cam plates E, E, operative independently of each other and in opposite directions to depress both said arms and the rods B, B, in the same direction to simultaneously release said curtain holding latches.
