connonetrron or RECURDING-MACHINE Sipecification of Letters Patent. f pliication filed December 14, 1908.
Patented Feb. 24L, 191a, Serial No. 467,472.
To (kill wiwm it "may coat-em:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BROWN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and time of New useful Recording-Machine, of which the folloiting is a specification.
My invention relates to recording machines, and has for its object the production of a particularly simple abdeflicieht'tecording element therefor; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed. I I
In describing this invention, reference is bad to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are elevatione partly in section, of one form of nijy'recordin mechaniszn, movable parts thereof bcinglsllown in l as in their normal or starting positions, and in Fig. 2 as in their positions as-' sumed when cooperating with each other. Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary views of oppo'eite edge portions of the i'ecordin element. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views simi or to Fig. 1 of modified constructions of this recording mechanism The preferable embodiment of a record ing mechanism embodying my invention comprises a movable recording element 1, having gear teeth provided with printing characters thereon; means for'holding the recording element in its normal or starting posit-ion means for limiting the movement of said element to different positions a gear 2 for meshing with said gear teeth, and means; 3 for" supporting a record-receiving element 4 upon which impressions are made by the printing characters.
Preferably, the recording element 1 comprises a Wheel loosely mounted on a suit able horizoi'ltal' support or axle 5 vand having a series of peripheral gear teeth extending partly around the same, a number or one'set of said teeth 6 being provided with raised printing characters 7, as 0, 1,2,3,ctc;,at their ends, and others of said teeth constituting another set being unpro'vidcd with printing characters one of the latter teeth, as 8, being shorter than the teeth 6 andnormally air; ranged atthe printing point. Said element 1 is usually provided with an indicating surface 9 located about diametrically opposite to the series of teeth 6, and provided with characters corresponding to the printing As will Fig. 2, i.
f characters 7 at the ends of said teeth, so that i when any predetermined printing character as 5, is at the printing point, the correspond- Yoi'ln have invented a new and 5 mg indicating character, as 5, will be dising element. To facilitate the reading of the indicating characteraafixed plate 10 is arranged iii-proximity to the edge of the recording element 1 at the left-hand side thereof, and is provided with a slot 11 with which is registered the indicating character corresponding to the character at the printing point.
, The portion of the recording element or Wheel 1 provided with the 8-, is usually weighted,.an Wheel 1 is normally arranged with the greater part of such Weighted portion above andat the right hand of the axis of said wheel, and, consequently, this Weighted portion normally tends to lnovc the element 1 in the direction. indicated by the arrow 1. be apparent to those skilled in the art, the element or wheel '1 may be moved in the reverse direction by hand or by any suitable mechanism, not illustrated.
The means for holding the recording ele ment 1 in its normal position, comprises a stop 12 which may be moved laterally or otherwise, from its normal position relatively to the recording element 1 to release said element. This stop preferably engages with a peripheral shoulder 13 on the element 1, the outer end of such shoulder be ing shown as located farther from the axis of the recording element 1 than the outer ends of the teeth 6, in order to avoid engagement of the stop 12 by the teeth 6. on the return movement of the recording element. It, will be understood, however, that ptolvidi'ng the stop 12 is held in'its position assuzlie in e-., out (of the path of the shouder 18, during the return of the recording eleear teeth 6 and the element or ment, it is not necessary that said shoulder I *project a greater distance beyond the periphery of the, recording element than the teeth 6. Although the stop 12 is particularly applicable for use with the recording element 1 it will be obvious that any other suitable means may be used in lieu thereof.
The means for limiting the movement of the recording element at predetermined points or positions in its path of movement in order to position predetermined charac tors at the printing point, may consist of an adjustable shoulder 1 1 carried by a suitable support 15 and adjustable relatively thereto in a curved line concentric with the recording element 1, said shoulder 14: being preferably movable in a curved guide in the suptrolled by the keys of a recording machine,-
but as I do not wish to limit my present invention to any particular mechanism for effecting or controlling the movement of the stop 14, I have deemed it unnecessary to illustrate and describe such mechanism. When adjusted along the support 15 the stop may be held in position by any suitable means, as a screw movable in a slot in the support 15, but I do not limit this invention to any particular means for holding the stop 14: from movement relatively to said support. It will be apparent however, to those skilled in the art that the shoulder 14: is only l mallyspac'ed apart therefrom, said drum one exemplification of means for limiting the movement of the recording element, an that any other suitable mechanism may be used for this purpose.
i The gear wheel 2 for meshing with the gear teeth of the recording element 1, is
normally out of mesh with such teeth, and
is movable toward and from'said element 1 into and out of mesh' with the gear teeth thereof. This wheel 2 is carried "by any suitable movable support 16, and whenengaged with the teeth of the recording element 1, is revolved or advanced by said element. Preferably, the wheel 2 is one of a train of calculating wheels and, upon making' a complete revolution, serves to advance another wheel of such train a single step. It is obvious, however, that the gear 2 may be any toothed element, the extent of movement of which depends upon the movement of the primary actuating element, as the wheel 1.
The means 3 for supporting a record-receiv ing element 4:, may be of any suitable construction, and is here shown as a revoluble drum or platen opposed to' the gear teeth of the recording element 1, and nor.-
being carried by a suitable support 17 and movable toward and from the recording element into and out of engagement with the character 7 at the printing point. Pro viding the member 1 has not been advanced from its normal or starting position at the time the means 3 is moved toward the p'i'intpoint, no impression will be made upon.
36 coacts with a therecord-receiving element .4, as the short too; 118 will be opposed to said means 3.
in operation, the stop 14 is adjusted to one of its various positions, and the shoul; der 12 is moved to its position illustrated in Fig. 2 for releasing the recording element 1, whereupon said element advances under the influence of its weighted portion until limited by the stop let. During the advance movement of the recording element 1, the gear 2 and drum 3 remain in theirvnormal positions, as shown in Fig. 1,'but preliminary to the retrograde movement of. said element 1, the record-receiving element 4 is moved into and out of its position shown in Fig. 2 for eiiectin theprintingthereon by the character at the printing point, and
the gear 2 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 2, so that it will be advanced'upon the return movement of the recording ele ment 1. After the. element 1 has been re'- turned to its normal or startingposition, the gear 2 is disengaged therefrom and moved to the position assumed in-Fig. 1.
In-Fig. 5, the recording element is shown as a sliding rack 18 having a series of gear teeth 19 similar to the teeth 6 and 8 of the recordin face corresponding to the teeth 19, is nor--' mally held from'downward movement by a pivoted pawl 21, movable by any suitable element 1. This rack 18 is pro-- vided with stop-shoulders 20 on its rear means, and coacting with the shoulders 20,- a
and when freed from the pawl 21 is limited in its downward movement at predetermined points or posit-ions by an adjustable stop 22 adjustable along a support 23. After the adjustable stop 22 limits the downward movement, ofthe recording element, the
pawl 21 returns to its position for-holding said element in its adjusted position.-
I In Fig."the recording element '1 is illus- I trated' as an {arc-shaped rack 24. carried-by the free, end of a rock-arm 25; loosely j.
mounted at its opposite end'on a. shait 26w Said rack 24 is held'in its various positions movement when free from the pawl 27 a-stop 28 movable along a convex su port 29, Fig. 7 shows a recordin "me'mb sistin lot a wheel 30 movab e in one direcby a. pivoted pawl 27 and is limited 'in-"its tion a out its axis by a spring 31, and hav- 1 mg peripheral teeth 32 similar to the teeth 6 and 8 previously described, and a series. of stop-shoulders 33 located about diametrically opposite to the teeth 32. A pivoted pawl 34:- coacts with the shoulders 33 to hold: the wheel 30 in its-adjusted position, and a stop 35 adjustable along a curved support peripheral. arm 37 on the wheel 30 for limiting the movement of, said wheel when free. from the pawl 34.
What I claim is 1 A movable "reeording element for cording machines, said element having a- 2. A recording element for recording inachines, said elementoscillating about a substantially horizontal axis, and having a series of peripheral gear teeth for engaging a toothed element, the teeth being provided with printing characters at their ends, and said recording element also having a weighted portion extending above and at one side of its axis, and overbalancing the opposite portion of said element for ad'- vancing the recording element by gravity, substantially as and for the purposedcscribed.
3. A recording element for recording nia ines, said element oscillating about a subfiantially horizontal axis, and having itspper portion weighted and provided with a series of peripheral gearteeth for engaging a toothed element, the teeth having .vdrinting characters at their ends, and the greater part of such weighted portion being above and to one side of the axis of said recording' element, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A. gear Wheel having two sets of peripheral teeth for engaging an intermeshing gear, one set of said teeth being provided with printing characters; and the other set being unprovided with printing characters, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a. recording machine, the combination of a movable recording element. having f gear teeth, a number of the teeth being pro- Evided with printing characters for being successively advanced to printing position, and another of the teeth being unprovided with a printing character, and being at the printing position, and a toothed element for cooperating with said gear teeth, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. A gear wheel-having a part of its pean inter-meshing gear, a plurality of such teeth carrying printing characters, said wheel having another portion of its periphery provided with a stop projecting theredescribed.
T. In combination in a recording pachine, a recording element movable about an axis, and havin peripheral gear teeth for engaging a toothed element, the teeth. extending partly around the recording element, said recording element also having a peripheral shoulder, the outer end thereof bein located vfarther from the axis of the recording ele ment than the ends of the teeth. and means normally cooperatin with the outer end of the peripheral shouder for preventing advancing movement of the recording element, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
