BUFFER FOR VESSELS.
1,1)88Atd9.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed May 28, 1913. Eterial No. 770,473.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL REPPA, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buffers for Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a butter for vessels, and the primary object of 'my invention is to furnish the bow of a vessel with a novel buffer for preventing the bow of a vessel from being caved-in, crushed, or in jured by contacting with an ice berg, wharf, wreckage or a vessel.
A further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable buffer that is applicable to various types of vessels, the buffer consisting of a series of springs arranged to yieldably hold a buffer head.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bow of a vessel provided with the buffer, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
A buffer in accordance with this invention comprises a plate 1 that is riveted or otherwise connected, as at 2 to the bow of a vessel 3, said plate extending from the bow under the sides of the vessel. Riveted or otherwise connected to the plate 1 are T and angle brackets 1 and. 5, supporting rods 6 that converge and protrude beyond the bow of the vessel. The rods 6 are provided with heads 7 and 8, and encircling said rods between the heads 8 and the brackets 5 are coiled compression springs 9, while coiled compression springs 10 encircle the rods 6 between the brackets 5 and the heads 7. The outer ends of the rods 6 are connected by a cross head 11 provided with a central opening 12.
Riveted or otherwise connected to the plate 1, as at 13 is the V-shaped bearing end 1 1 of a guide pin 15 that extends through the opening 12 of the cross head 11. Movably mounted upon the outer end of the guide pin 15 is the sleeve 16 of a butler head 17, said sleeve having a pin and slot connection 18 with the pin 15, whereby the butter head cannot become accidentally displaced relatively to said guide pin. Encircling the guide pin 15, between the cross head 11 and the bearing end 1 1 of said pin, is a coiled compression spring 19. Encircling the pin 15 and the sleeve 16 between the buffer head 17 and the cross head 11 is a coiled compression spring 20.
In operation the springs 9 and 10 cushion a movement of the cross head 11 and said cross head cooperates with the springs 19 and 20 in cushioning a movement of the butter head 17 relatively to the pin 15.
What I claim is In a butter for vessels, the combination with a bearing plate adapted to be carried by the bow of a vessel, of brackets carried by said plate, rods movable in said brackets, heads carried by said rods, coiled compression springs encircling said rods between said heads and said brackets, a cross head connecting said rods, a guide pin having a bearing point connected to said plate and extending through said cross head, a butler head having a sleeve slidably mounted upon said guide pin, and coiled compression springs interposed between said cross head, said butl'er head and the bearing point of said pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL REPPA.
