Description

cada sind aan elim+ ROBERT R. SPEDDEN AND EARRIE T. -SPEDDERL OE AsToRIjA. OREGON.y
Letters Patent No. 108,843, dated Novemberil, 1870.
. The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that we, ROBERT R. SPEDDEN and HAEEIE T. SPEDDEN, of Astoria, in the county of Clatsop and State of Oregon, haveinvented a new aud useful Improvement in Hoe-Scrapers; and we do hereby declare that thezlfollowing-is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which-will enable others skilled in the `art to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication. v
This invention relates to a new and useful improve# ment in a scraper for hoes and other implements or tools, whereby the bladesI of such implements (more especially the h oe) may be'kept clean and in proper condition for use; and
It consists in applying a scraper to either one or both sides of a hoe, spade, or similar instrument, and in supporting and operating it by means of 'a spring or springs, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a side view of a hoe provided lwith my scraper on each side of the blade.
v Figure 2 is Aa front-end View of the hoe and scraper.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the blade of the hoe.
B is the handle. l
C is a spring attached to the handle by the adjustabie-clasp D, which spring is attached to the scraperhead E.
F, fig. 2, is the scraper proper, which isathinpicce of metal corresponding in lengt-h to the width of the hoe, as represented.
This piece F is connected with the head-piece E by springs G,.which are so formed and connected with the head that they are made to press thelower edge, spring F, tightly against the blade of the hoe.
In practice, where the soil is mucky or damp, this arrangement is attached to the head, solas to operate on each side of the blade, .but it-may be applied to only one side, -if preferred.
The main spring Gis so curved upward from th handle that the Scrapers are supported on the upper portion of the blade, as seen in thedrawing.
To clean the blade the scraper is forced downward to or beyond the edge of the hoe, which action instanily removes whatever adheres to it.
-The 'operation may be performed by the hand or foot, or in any other method.
The reaction ofthe spring C brings up the scraper to the position seen in the drawing, where it doersnot interfere -wit-h or obstruct the blade in using the hoe.
By means of the bolt in the head E, the pressure of the Scrapers to the sides of the blade may be iucreased or diminished as may be desired. Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters `Patent-.-
In combination with the blade A, the Scrapers F, (one or more,) when arranged to. operate substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
ROBERT It. SIEDDEN. H. T. SPEDDEN.
