To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ISRAEL OHARET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have made new and useful Improvements in Scales, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates generally to scales and is more particularly directed to improvements in the structure described and claimed in my pending application Serial Number 668,283.

The subject-matter of this application contemplates an improved arrangement of parts whereby the indicating mechanism is actuated in a more efficient manner.
In the accompanying sheets of drawings which form. part of this application the preferred embodiment of the inventive idea is illustrated and also a modification there of, and in such drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the indicating and weighing mechanisms; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is an end view; while Fig. 1 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 and illustrating a modified arrangement.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive the structure, as illustrated, comprises a frame preferably made up of the spaced parts 1, 2 which may be secured in position in any suitable manner; each of these parts is provided with knife-edge sup ports 3, 4, 5 which cotiperate to movably carry the elements to be subsequently described. Adjacent the top of the frame is an indicating mechanism comprising a dial 6, a pointer 7 carried by the spindle 8, the spindle being provided with a pinion 9 and being rotatably mounted in the parts of the Mounted to swing in the said" supports 3, 4: are the arms 10, 11 provided with the'ofi'sets 10, 11; since each of the arms and offsets are substantially similar a description of one will suffice for both; the offset 11 is preferably fixed to a cross-piece 12 having knife edges 13 adjacent the ends and which rest in the said supports 4 carried by the parts 1, 2 of the frame. Ad-
justably mounted on the arm 11 is a mass of material 1 1 which may be secured thereon by means of a set screw 15, the said mass of material tending to return the said arm to certain position when no other forces are acting on the arm. Adjacent the upper end of the arm 11 is a knife edge 16 which engages with the inner wall of an opening 17 in a downwardly depending hook 18. Referrlng particularly to Fig. 2 it will be noted that thehooks 18 are connected to an actuating mechanism made up of the cross arm 19 and draft rod 20 through the medium of offsets 21 carried by the said cross arm; when a load is placed on the scale platform the draft rod moves and the indicating mechanism is' operated through means to be subsequently set forth. Fixed to the outer end of the offset 11 and preferably beyond the knife edge 13 is an arm 22 having 'a curved slot 23 therein; as will be appreciated later on the particular shape and curvature of this slot may be widely varied in the construction of different scales. Of course the arm 22 may be carried by the offset 10'. Extending between the parts 1 and 2 of the frame and carried by the supports 5 through the medium of knife edges 24 is a member 25 havin a plate 26 extending therefrom and provi ed along the lower curved edge portion with teeth 27, the plate as described forming what I term a sector;
Extending to one side of the said member 25 .1s an arm 28 having a bifurcated lower end with a pin 29-extending transversely thereof, a roller 30 being mounted on the pin. On reference to Fig. 3 particularly it will be seen that the bifurcated portion of the arm 28 embraces the arm 22, the roller 30 being positioned in the slot 23 in this arm. In order to properly maintain the knife edges 24L in the supports 5 and to prevent the said edges from jumping out of the supports when the scales are in use, a weight 31 is employed which is preferably fixed to the member 25 by means of a bolt or screw 32; as shown the central axis of this weight passes through the engagement line of the knife edge and the support, the result being that firm engagement of the edge in the support is always effected. \Vhen the draft rod 20 is moved (as when a load is placed on the scale platform) the arms 10, 11 swing about their knife edge supports and the indicating mechanism is operated through the medium of the slotted arm 22 and the lower end of the arm 28 in engagement therewith; the extent of movement of the pointer 7 may be varied by the use of differently formed slots 23 inthe said arm 22 the scale being thereby adapted to register loads of greater or lesser amounts merely by change in the design of thesaid slotted arm. Since the slotted armlies on one side of the knife edge support and the arm 11 lies on the opposite si e thereto it is apparent that any slight movement of the arm 11 will cause movement of the indicating mechanism, the result being that a sensitive structure is provided.
A modified structure is shown in Fig. 4: wherein the slotted arm 22' lies above the knife edge support, the particular shape of the slot- 23 being also modified; it is of course obvious that the structure herein shown offers no substantial departure from what is illustrated-in Figs. 1 to 3, the inventive idea being comprehended in both; various other modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, such modifications bein included within the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as my invention isl. In a scale, the combination of a plurality of arms, an offset portion extending between the arms and in engagementwith both, one of the arms being provided with a slot, means for mounting the arms and oifsct in movable relation with a support, an indicating mechanism, and means engaging inthe said slot and cooperatively associated with the said mechanism whereby movement of the arms is. transmitted to the mechanism. I

In a scale, the combination of a plurality of arms, an offset portion extending between the arms and in engagement with both, means for mounting the arms and 01T- set in a movable position, oneof the arms being provided with a slot, an indicating mechanism, and means comprising an arm said mechanism, and the arm being and a sector for transmitting motion of the first-mentioned arms to the said mechanism, the sector actuating the movable element of the mechanism.
3. In a scale, a weighted arm, an offset extending therefrom, a second arm carried by the offset and provided with a slot :1 support, knife edges carried by the ofl'set and lying between the said arms, the knife edges engaging the said support, an indicating mechanism, a sector movably mounted in position, an arm extending from the sector, the sector being associated with the provided with means for engagement in the said slot whereby movement of the said first arms is transmitted to the indicating mechanism.
4. In a scale, a weighted arm, an offset extending therefrom, a slotted arm carried by the offset, means for supportin the said weighted arm, an indicating mechanism, a sector, knife edges carried by the sector, bearings for the knife edges, an element carried by the sector and engaging the said slotted arm, the said sector being associated with the indicating mechanism, and a mass of material carried by the sector and lying at a higher elevation than the said knife edges whereby the indicating mechanism will be actuated by movement of the weighted arm, the said mass of material preventing the knife edges on the sector from leaving the said bearings during such movement.
