Description

' NELLY,
PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP no. 19, 1912. e 1,088,182. Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
STEPHEN J. nIELLr," or GOALINGA, CALIFORNIA.
BOD on PIPE CLAMP.
Specification of Letters fatent.
Patented Feb. 24:, 1914.
Application filed December 19,1912. Serial No. 737,697.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN J. RIELLY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coalinga, in the county of Fres no and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod or Pipe Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rod or pipe clamps, and its object is to provide an improved device of this character adapted to readily and securely clamp a sectlon of rod, shafting orpipe.
It is frequently desired to remove ump rods or casings from a well, or to ower such rods and casings into a well, and the purpose of the hereindescribed pipe clamp is to grip and hold such rods and casings to prevent them from dropping into the well and for holding the lowermost rods and casings while the upper ones are being removed andv repaired.
The clamp comprises only two pieces adapted to be readily adjusted about the object to be held in place; one'that may be quickly and readily secured in position and removed, and one wherein the action of a single wedge member'secures the clamp in place. a y
- Though this device is adapted for use in many relations, it is particularly. adapted for use with pump rods and casings.
Further objects and advantages ofthe invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.'
In the accompanying drawing Fignre 1 is a side elevation looking to the right in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view loo-king to the left in Fig. 3. Fig. ,3 is a sectional view with the rod shown in elevation, and Fig. 4: is a detailed perspective view of a key hereinafter described.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the rod to be clamped. This rod enters a central toothed bore 7, of a body member 8. A radial opening 9 formed in said body member receives a key 10. This key is provided with a toothed channel 11, laterally extending webs or ribs12 and webs cr ribs 13, which are inclined outwardly with relation to thebody portion of the key,and which are provided with flaring outer portions, serving a purpose hereinafter set forth. The webs 12 andl3 are inclined with relation to the body of the key 10 and engage in correspondingly inclined recesses 14 and 15 of the body member, so that as the key is driven toward the left in Fig. 3, it is, by reason of the inclination of the Webs 12 and 13, caused to bear with great pressure upon the rod 5 and consequently to draw the body portion 8 toward itself. This causes the toothed bore of the body portion to grip the rod with great forcej body portion under the action of the wedge, the otherwise free portions 16 thereofare tied together by the .fiaring shape of the webs 13, the flaring terminal portions of said websengaging behind the hook terminals 17 to prevent separation of the portions 16 with relation to each other, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description it will'be seen that the present invention comprises To prevent spreading of the eflicient means for quickly .grasping the I body of a rod or pipe, and While it is particularly intended for use in connection with pump rods, and casings, it is apparent that it is capable of use in many other relations;
Having described my invention, 'what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a body portion having a bore extending therethrough and having a radial opening to communicate with said bore, there being passages having inclined wedge walls formed in the side walls of .tlld radial openlng in combination with a key adapted to enter said radial opening,
said key having wedge Webs extending laterally therefrom which enter said passages, said key having its inner face complementally formed with relation to said bore, ad-s ditional webs carried by said key, said Webs having fla-ringterminal port-ions, there belug correspondingly shaped recesses formed in the side walls of said radial opening in which said flaring'webs engage, as and for the purposes set forth.
. 2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a body port-ion having a circular bore extending therethrough and having a radial slot of a Width substantially equal to the diameter of said bore, a radially disposed key having its inner face complement-ally formed with relation to saidbore, a pair of transversely extending Wedge webs located at the inner terminal the sidewalls of the radial v the-first named webs and the outer end of portion of said key, and inclined with relation to the longitudinal axis of said bore, slot of the body portion having inclined passag s formed therein in which said wedge wells engage, and a pair of additional webs projecting from the side faces of said key intermediate said key, said last named websbeing inclined with relation to the longitudinal axis of the bore and lying at an angle otherthan a right angle to the side faces of the key and having their outer terminal porjuncture with said key, said side Walls of the radial slot of the body portion having additional inclined passages formed therein in which said last named webs engage.
In testimony whereof I afiix in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN J. RIELLY.
