vJr.,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is aspecication.
This -invention relates to reels.
The reel herein illustrated and described is one particularly adapted for `use by me in connection with machine'sfor uniting metallie sheetsor plates and subsequent to uniting the same, winding them on the reel. v
One object, however', is to provide a reel applicable for winding other material thereon whether in single strips or interlocked strips.
Another object is to .provide a reel embodying among other-characteristics meansv whereby material may be Wound thereupon and at ,a predetermined time readily `dis-v chargedtherefrom.
A still further ob'ect resides' in the provil sion of a reel embo ying the aforesaid characteristics and including means whereby the same may be adjusted for the winding of material of various widths.
With the above and other objectsI in view the present invention consists in the combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the ac companying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being be made in the form, proportion, an minor details without departing from the spirit lor sacrilicing any of theadvantages ofthe invention.

As has been intimated, my improved reel may be used for various purposes and with this understanding reference to the accompanying drawings will disclose two standards 10 and 11, each having u per and lowerr bearings 12 and 13, the stan ard 11 having a foot 14 by means of which it may be fastened or otherwise supported on any suitable base. The standard 10 has a foot 15 adapted tobe fixed in ad'ustable yositions by means of bolts 16 on t e slide l which latter may be fastened or otherwise secured to a suitable base. Journaleol in the bearings 12 of the stand ards 1Q and 11 are stub shafts'lS and 19, respectively, on which stub shafts are.liX edly mounted at the inner ends thereof disks 20 each provid-edwith a plurality of aper tures apthroughpwhich may slide a plurality of fingers, projections, or material retaining elements 21 carried by disks 22 slidably mounted on said stub shafts 18 and 19.
One form of means for effecting a sliding movement of the disks 22 on the stub shafts `1 8 and 19 resides in attaching to the outer side face of each disk 22 a grooved collar 23 intouthe groove lof each of which project the fingers 24 of the forked arms 25 and 26 of the levers 27 and 28, respectively. The lever 28 1s preferably pivotally mounted at '29 on the gear or lutg 30 of the standard 11. The lever 27 isipre erably pivoted by'means of a suitable pivot 31 on the ear or lug 32 of the standard 10. The pivots 29 and 31 are preferably opposite each other and the levers 27 and 28 are arranged so that their inner ends may overlapv in spaced :relation as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Y
To operate the levers 27 and 28 I provide lpreferably a lever 33 which is preferably mounted on the same pivot 31 as the one on which the lever 27 is pivoted. This ,operating lever 33 vis provided at its inner end with an arm 34 which lies beneath the aforepurpose presently exends it is preferably provided with apertures 35 whereby, in the event of an adjustment of the standard 10 outwardly, these apertures may have fitted in either of them the aforesaidpivot 31 according to the degree of adjustment of the standard 10 away from the standard 11. y
To operate' the reel` for the purpose Y'of winding the material A thereon I provide a drive shaft. 36 which is journaled in the aforesaid bearings 13 of the vstandards 10 Jand 11. This shaft 36 is connected by chains 37 and sprocket lwheels 38 with the aforesaid stub shafts 18- and 19 so that uponrotation of the'l drive shaft 36 the stub shafts 19, and consequently the reel disks 20 and 22 are operated to wind the material on the material., retaining lin' rs 21. of the reel. To effect rotation of t e' drive shaft A36 I dispose on the same a pulley 39 to which be adjusted toward and away from the said leversY 27 and 281ml intermediate its nected up with any suitable driving source (not shown) to effect a friction drive.
The operating lever 33 may be arranged to be operated elther b y hand or foot power or in any other suitable manner.' Irrespective of how operated, a downward move ment on the out-er end of the operating lever 33 will cause an upward movement of the 'inner end thereof and a consequent uniform raising of the levers 27 and 28 by the Varm 34 of said lever 33. As the levers 27 and 28 are raised on their pivots 29 and 31 the forked arms 25 and 26 are consequently thrown outward' with the result that, by virtue`of the connections between theforked arms 25 and 26 with the disks 22, the fingers or material retaining elements 21 are drawn through the apertures a of the disks 2O with the 'result that the material wound upon these material holding lingers -2l is permitted to drop from the reel. I preferably dispose an inclined conveying means 40 of any suitable character beneath the reel for the purpose of takin this wound material which is discharge from the reel to any suitable place. While the sprocket wheel 38 on the shaft 36 adjacent the standard .10 is rotatable with the drive shaft 36 it is slidably mounted thereon so that as the standard "10 is moved longitudinally of the shaft 36' for adjustment purposes, said vsprocket wheel may be moved also lon tudinally of the shaft 36 according to't e adjustment of the standard 10 with respect to the standard 11.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the character described comprising spaced standards, a drive shaft journaled in the standards intermediate the ends of the latter, stub shafts journaled in the standards` at the u per ends of the latter over the drive slfaft, a disk ixedly mounted at the inner end of each stub shaft and provided with apertures, a disk slidably mounted on each stub shaft adjacent the aforesaid disks and provided with maw terial retaining ngers which project through the apertures of the rst-named disks, driving connections between the drive shaft and the stub shafts, bell crank levers pivoted on the standards and each having one of its arms connected with one of the rst-mentioned disks, another lever pivoted on one of thestandards and provided with an arm at one end adapted to engage the other arms of said bell' crank levers to operate the latter to throw the second-mentioned disks outwardly on the stub shafts and thereby draw both sets of the material retaining fingers outwardly through the apertures of the fixed disks to discharge the material from the reel.
2. A reel including in combination spaced standards, a drive shaft journaled in the standards above the drive shaft, a disk fxedly mounted at tlie inner end of each stub shaft and provided with apertures, a disk slidably mounted on each stub shaft and provided wit-h material retaining tingers which project through the apertures of the first-named disks, driving means between the drive shaft and the stub shafts, levers pivoted on the standards and having operative connectionwith the second mentioned disks with portions of the levers overlapping each other in spaced relation, means for engaging said -levers at their overlapping portions to operate said levers so as to slide the second-mentioned disks on their stub shafts to draw both sets of said material retaining fingers outwardly through the apertures of the first-mentioned disks to discharge the material from the reel. f

A device of the character described, including in combination, a reel embodying oppositely disposed movable disks and material retaining fingerson which material may be wound, means for rotating the reel, bell crank levers having connection with disks of the reel to operate said disks and thereby disconnect the material retaining fingers fromthe material wound thereon to effect a discharge of the material from engagement with said fingers, and means for operating said bell crank levers.

A device of the character described inclding in combination, a reel embodying oppositelydisposed movable disks and material retaining fingers on which material may be wound, means for rotating the reel, bell crank levers having connection with disks ofthe reel to operate said disks and thereby` disconnect the material retaining fingers from thematerial wound thereon to effect a -discharge of the material from engagement with said fingers, and another lever having an arm at one end adapted to engage the bell crank levers to operate the same upon operation of said other lever.

A device of the character described comprising spaced standards, a drive shaft journaled in the standards, stub shafts journaled in the standards above the drive shaft, a. disk fiXedly mounted at the inner end of each stub shaft and provided with apertures, a disk slidably mounted on each stub shaft and provided with material retaining ngers which project through the apertures of the fixed disks, driving means between the drive shaft andthe stub shafts, bell crank levers pivoted on the standards below the drive shaft and each including an upwardly directed arm and an inwardly directed arm, the upwardly directed arms of the bell crank levers being connected to the slidable disks, the inwar ly directed arms of the bell crank levers overlap ing each other in spaced relation, means or engaging the inner ends of the inwardly directed arms of the bell crank levers to operate the disks to discharge latter and thereby slide-the slidable disks away from the fixed disks to thereby draw both 'sets of said material -retaining fingers outwardly through' the apertures of the xed the material from Said material retainin lingers. j
