Be it known that l, @riant-ns E. lian-- Nine, a citizen of the United States,'and a resident oi' the city of Davenport7 county oit Scott, and State ot' iowa, have inventedcertain new and useful improvements in Vend ing-lilacliines9 of which the following is specification.

My invention relates to improvements in vending machines and has for its object the provision ot' a vending machine of improved construction and operation and one which is adapted to vend various articles not vendible by the ordinary vending machines new in use.

A further object of my invention is to provide a machine of this character lwhich is simple of construction and lconvenient and ehcient in use.

The invention consists vin the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Each of the latching'notches 6 is adapted to receive an inwardly turned end 7 of a corresponding latching lever 8 which is pivotally mountedl at the front of casing l and is normally held in depressed position by means of a spring 9. Each ot' the latching projections 5 is provided with a beveled or pointed nose, adapted to automatically elevate thecorresponding lever ends 7 so as to cause engagement thereof with the corresponding notch 6 upon closingv of each of the A spring l0 is provided in each doors. et' the compartments in casing l and contacts with the inner side of the corresponding door to force said door open when released. `The three uppermost doors 3 are 'provided with inwardly projecting supporting shelves 1l which are adapted to supportwthe articles contained in the corresponding compartments and carry such articles outwardly when said doors are opened so as to facilitate delivery oi said articles. By this arrangement it will be observed that upon elevation ol3 the corresponding latching lever Si the door of the corresponding` compartment will automatically open to permit discharge or delivery of the article contained in said compartment.

A vertically sliding release bar 12 is ar- 1anged in `the'forward portion oi *casing 1 and is provided with a plurality of lateralliT projecting release pins 13, each ot said release pins resting under one of the latehing lends 7 of levers-'8.` Release bar 12 extends to the top oi the casing 1 where it is provided with a forwardly turned end 1.4L which facilitates manual elevation of said bar.`

Casina'l is provided with a removable cover 15' which affords `access to the upper end of release bar l2. By this arrangement it will be observed that upon elevation of release bar l2 all of the latching levers S will be elevated simultaneously and all of the closed doors 3 simultaneously opened.I thus facilitating recharging` ot' the machine.

rl main check or coin chute 16 is arranged to extend vertically at the front of the machine. and pluralityT et individual check or coin chutes 17 are arranged substantially horizontally at the side ot main chute 1G to discharge therein, there being` one of the individual check chutes 17 to correspond with each of the latchin-g levers 8 as shown. Each of the latching levers 8 is provided with a pin 18 projecting forwardly through a slot 19 provided in plate 20, which constitutes the rear of the check chutes, each of the pins 18 being so positioned that the passage of a check or coin through the corresponding individual chute 17 and into chute 16 will elevate the pin and consequently the corresponding latching lever S. Suitable entry openings 21 are provided for the insertion ot checks or coins in the chutes 17 and a slide member 22 is arranged to reciprocate in each ot said chutes 17 to torce an inserted check or coin through t-he corresponding chute 17 and discharge the same into chute 16. Each of the slides 22 is provided with an operating knob 23 projecting Jforwardly through a slot 24 provided in the front plate of the casing` 1. Each of the slides 22 is held normally in retracted and depressed posit-ion by means of a spring 25 which is secured at one end to a bar 26 carried by an inwardly projecting post 27 and at its other end to a suitable flange provided in casing 1. The post or pin 27 on each of the slides 29 is adapted to automatically engage a corresponding locking notch 29 in a vertically reciprocatory locking and release bar 30, arranged in casing 1, as shown. A bar 30 is held normally in elevated position by means of a tension spring 31 which is made strong enough to resist the tension of the diiierent springs 25, but which may be manually depressed to release pins 28 from notches 29, as will be readily understood. Ey this construction, it will be observed, that when slides 22 are forced to the left by means ot knob 23, a check or coin inserted in the corresponding chute 17 will be forced out of said chute and into chute 16 thus elevating the corresponding latching lever 8 and opening the door 3 to the corresponding vending compartment in the casing 1. Upon completion ot such movement of slide 22, pin 27 thereon automatically rides into the corresponding notch 29 `and locks said slide against retraction by spring 25 thus closing the corresponding opening 21 against insertion or another check or coin. lVhen the machine is empty, or when it is desired to recharge or reset the same for any reason, depression of bar 30 will release all of the slides 22 which have `thus been placed in sealing or locking position and permit their return to normal position under the influence of springs 25. A locked drawer 32 is arranged in the lower portion of casing 1 to receive checks `or coins from chute 16.

By the construction above set forth, it will be observed, that various articles of merchandise, such as pies, cakes, or packages of candy may be sold, and that the same will be delivered in good condition and without being damaged by Contact with each other. The speciiic term of construction employed is simple and ctiicient in use.

"While l have illustrated and described the preferred Jform ot construct-ion for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit ot the invention.Y

I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details ot construction set forth, but desire to avail myself ot such variations and modifications as come within the scope ot' the appended claims.

Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:

1. A vending machine comprising a casing; a plurality of compartments therein; a separate door for each compartment; a separate catch tor holding each of said doors closed; automatic means for opening said doors when released; means tor releasing said catches separately; and means for releasing said catches simultaneously, substantially as described,

A vending machine comprising a casing; a plurality ot compartments therein; a separate door for each compartment; a separate catch for holding each of said doors closed; automatic means for opening said doors when released; means for releasing said catches separately; and manually operable means tor releasing' said catches simultaneously, substantially as described.

3. A vending machine comprising a casing; a plurality of compartments therein; a separate door Jfor each compartment; a separate catch for holding each of said doors closed; automatic means for opening said doors when released; means for releasing said catches separately; means for releasing said catches simultaneously; and a locked door giving access to said last mentioned means, substantially as described.

4. A vending' machine comprising a casing; a plurality of compartments therein; a separate door tor each compartment; a separate catch for holding each ot' said doors closed; automatic means for opening said doors when released; means for releasing said catches separately; manually operable means tor releasing said catches simultaneously; and a locked door giving access to said last mentioned means, substantially as described.

5. A vending machine comprising a casing; a plurality of compartments therein; a separate door for each ot said compartments; a separate catch Jfor holding each of said doors closed; a spring arranged to throw each of said doors open upon release ot the corresponding catch; means ior releasing said catches separately; and means for releasing said catches simultaneously, substantially as described.

6. A Vending machine comprising a casing; a plurality of horizontal partitions in said casing dividing the same into aplurality ci' separate compartments; a swinging door for each compartment; a latching projection on each of said doors having a beveled nose and a notch therein; a spring held latch for each or" said projections arranged to be struck by the beveled nose thereon and automatically engage said notch to lock the corresponding door closed; and a longitudinally movable member engaging each of said latches and arranged to release all of said catches upon longitudinal movement thereof, substantially as described.

7. A vending machine comprising a casing; a plurality of horizontal partitions in said casing dividing the same into a plurality of separate compartments; a swinging door for each compartment; a latching projection on each of said doors having abeveled nose and a notch therein; a spring held latch for each of said projections arranged to be struck by the beveled nose thereon and automatically engage said notch to lock the corresponding door closed; a longitudinally movable member engaging' each ci said latches and arranged to re ease all of said catches upon longitudinal movement thereof; and a locked door giving access to said member, substantially as described.
