Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular refe-'rence to the accompanying drawings.
-In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the lamp, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a 'plan `view'of the device, the( dome and parts carried thereby being res/ moved.
Referring particularly'to the drawings, 10 represents a receptacle which forms the carbid chamber, in'which the gas is 4generated, said receptacle having an annular flange 11, and an upwardlyextending exteriorly threaded-portion 12, which threadedA portion is adapted to receive the interiorly threaded lower end of the upper or domeshaped portion 1,3. This upper portion has a horizontal partition wall 14 which divides the said dome into the upper or water chamber 15, and the lower or gas chambei" 16, the lower end of the dome having a iange 17 which'engages a rubber gasket '18 disposed between it and the iange 11 on the carbid receptacle, In the top of the dome is a filling opening 19 having a suitable clo sure 20 provided with a pair' of downwardly extending wire lingers 21 having the lateral oii'set portions 22-on their ends, said wire lingelfs being normally spaced apart a distance greater than thediameter of the openpressed for insertion therethrough, thus vented. Extending vertically through the water chamber at one side is a tube 23 havin g the lateral inlet opening 24 disposed within the 'water chamber, said tube extending below the partition 14 into the gas chamber. Located in this tube is a rod 25 formed' between a piece of metal, circular in cross section, one side-for a portion of itsl length near the lower end being flattened asV at 26.
ormally the rod 25 is rotated to the position so that its rounded side is against the opening 24 thus preventing outflow ct water from the -water chamber, but when the rod' is turned to present the flat side toward the opening, a passage is formed to allow water to pass down through the gas chamber toward the carbid chamber. An 4inverted cap member 27 is located in the upper portion or. the carbid receptacle, the diameter of said cap member being slightly less than the diameter of the carbid chamber so that an annular space 28 is formed between said cap member and the wall 'of the carbid chamber. Secured to the periphery of the cap'member 27 isa continuous strip 29 vformed with a continuous series of vertically arranged waves or convolutions 30 so that vertical -passages 3l-'are formed between the cap member and the said strip. The lower edge of said strip is adapted't'o lrest on the upper edge of the end threaded portion of the carbid chamber and in such position that the water which flows down through'the tube 23 will'drop lon to the upper edge of the carbid chamberl and pass down into said chamber by means of the space 32, the generated gas escaping from the carbid chamber upwardly through the passages 31 into the gas chamber 16, from .whence it escapes through the burner pipe `32 to the tip A33 where it burns, a lsuitable projecting .Hange- 34 being secured 'to the dome -13 and surrounding the opening through which proljects the burner tube 34,
In the use of the device, when the same is attached to the cap of the miner t-he movement of the miner will 'cause the water toA run around on the upper edge of the carbid chamber and flow through the openings 32 into the carbid chamber, the gasfiowing up through the openings 31- to the gas cham ber. From this it will thus be seen that by reason of the movements of the miner, the lamp will be so agitated that the Waterfwill pass all around the upper ledgeof thev carbid chamber, and finally overliow into the openings 32.
