.J. B. GONOVER & E. M. PEACOOK. MILK CAN.

MILK-CAN.
Application filed July 5, 1913 Serial No. 777,448.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JACOB B. Conovnn and EDWARD M. Pnacoon, citizens of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lvIilk-Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Our invention relates to milk cans and similar sheet metal containers, and has for a general object the provision of a strong durable joint at the juncture of the body and breast of the can, capable of withstanding the hard usage to which such cans are subj ected.
Another object of our invention is to pro vide such a joint which will be sanitary and easily cleaned.
Another object is to provide for the convenient housing of a reinforcing hoop within the joint. I
Other objects are simplicity of construction and inexpensiveness of manufacture.
Still other objects and advantages of our invention will appear from the following description.
In our improved joint the upper end of the body is received in an annular recess in the lower end of the breast formed by providing a double fold in the breast, and the upper end of the body which is inclosed in the recess is ofl'set outwardly, the two inner walls of the recess fitting into the offset so as to form a flush interior joint without any unevenness or crevice for the lodgment of decayed milk. In our co-pending application, Serial Number 777,447, filed on even date herewith, we have shown and claimed such a joint broadly. In the specific form shown in our said application, the offset portion of the body and the inclosing walls of the recess fit down upon the inclined wall of the breast, and, while this construction has certain marked advantages, it results in the joint between the shoulder of the offset and the ends of the inner walls of the recess being located at the angle between the cylindrical body and the frusto-conical portion of the breast, and the joint is, therefore, difiicult of access in cleaning.
In our present improved construction, the joint is disposed along the cylindrical body of the can below the angle between the body Specification of Letters Patent.

and breast, the double fold being provided below the tapered or frusto-conical portion of the breast and the walls of the recess bemg cylindrical. Preferably, also, the reinforcing hoop is disposed about the ofiset end of the body within the recess, thus rendering the joint very strong.
e shall now describe the embodiment of our invention illustrated in the accompanymg drawing and shall thereafter point out our invention in claims.
In the drawing, we have shown the upper portion of a milk can, partly in elevation and partly in central vertical section, and containing ajoint embodying our invention. The breast 1 is provided with a double fold at its lower end and below its frusto-conical portion, forming a substantially cylindrical recess having the two inner vertically disposed or cylindrical walls 2 and 3, and an outer wall 4. The cylindrical body 5 is provided. at its upper end with an outwardly offset cylindrical portion 6 forming an an nular shoulder 7- of ,a width substantially equal to the thickness of the two inner walls 2 and 3 of the recess, and this offset portion 6 is received in the recess. The inner walls 2 and 3 of the recess fit into the ofiset and abut against the shoulder 7 and form a flush interior joint, which may be finished with solder to render the joint smooth. The inner wall 2 of the recess, therefore, forms a continuation of the cylindrical body of the can, and the joint is thus located along the vertical wall where it is easily accessible for cleaning.
A relnforcing hoop 7 may also be provided for further strengthening the joint, and this hoop is preferably disposed in the recess about the offset portion 6 of the body 5, the outer wall 4 of the recess being forced inwardly about the hoop, as shown, and forming a convenient inclosure or housing for the hoop. There is thus provided at the joint the four thicknesses of the sheet metal and the hoop, thereby forming an extremely strong and securely locked joint, and one which may be easily and quickly formed and which is sanitary and neat in appearance.
It is obvious that various modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawing and above particularly deinvention.
We claim:
1. In a milk can or the like, a cylindrical body having an outward oflset at its upper end forming an annular shoulder, and a breast'provided with a double fold below its tapered portion with a double inner wall forming a substantially cylindrical recess for the reception of the upper ofi'set end of the body, the double inner wall of the recess fitting into the offset so as to form a flush interior joint at the juncture of the said shoulder and the lower end of said wall.
2. In a milk can or the like, a body and a breast, the breast being provided with a double fold forming an annular recess for the reception of the upper end of the body, and a hoop interposed in the joint between the upper inclosed end of the body and the outer wall of the recess, the inner wall of the breast recess being located inside the upper end of the body so that the upper end of the body as well as the hoop are inclosed within the annular recess of the breast.
3. In a milk can or the like, a body and a breast, the body having an outward ofi'set at its upper end forming an annular shoulder and the breast being provided with a double fold with a double inner wall, forming a substantially cylindrical recess for the reception of the upper ofiset end of the body, the double inner wall of the recess fitting into the offset so as to form a flush interior joint at the juncture of the said shoulder and the lower end of said end forming an annular shoulder, a breast provided with a double fold below its tapered portion with a double inner wall, forming a substantially cylindrical recess for the reception of the upper offset end of the body, the double inner wall of the recess fitting into the offset so as to form a flush interior joint at the juncture of the said shoulder and the lower end of said wall, and a hoop interposed in the joint at the juncture of the said shoulder and the lower end of said wall between the upper offset end of the body and the outer wall of the recess so that the ofi'set upper end of the body as well as the hoop are inclosed within the recess of the breast.
In testimony whereof we have alfixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
