CORD-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1914.
Application filed June 19, 1912. Serial No. 704,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR M. CoMsTocx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Constantine, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cord-Fasteners, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cord fasteners and has for its object a construction of a cheap, simple and yet effective fastener adapted especially to be attached to boxes, like candy boxes, etc., and which shall in appearance be ornamental, and it consists in the specific device constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1, illustrates a blank made preferably from sheet brass, which possesses some stiffness and resiliency. Fig. 2, shows the article as formed and attached to a box cover. Fig. 8, is a section on the line 00x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, shows a package fastened with a double fold of cord running at right angles to each other.
In the drawings, similar letters refer to similar parts.
In the drawings, A represents a blank which may be stamped from a single sheet of metal as already stated. As such blank is stamped a tongue piece B has cut therein a longitudinal slit 7) terminating in an opening 7) for a purpose hereinafter stated. A body portion A is preferably partially circular in form and integrally formed with the tongue B. Two prongs C, C, are also integrally formed thereon for a purpose hereinafter described. The portion D is divided into two extending parts D, D
preferably leaving a curvillnear opening D between the two parts although this opening is not necessarily a part of my invention in itself.
In further forming the article, the part D is bent or lapped over upon the part A along the line of the neck E. The spurs C and C are bent in the opposite direction to the folding along the line E and are thus adapted to be inserted in perforations in the cover of a box and then clamped down upon the under side of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2 thus fastening the cord fastener to the package. A cord having a knot on the end of it is passed into the slit 6 through the larger portion thereof b, the slit being narrowed at its extremity prevents the knot on the cord fro-m passing through it, the cord can thereafter be wrapped around the box and then over and pinched between the part D and the part A, where it is held by the resiliency of the parts and can thereafter be looped to either one or both of the parts D, D in any convenient form. Also its extension may be placed around the box at right angles to the first coil and brought over from the opposite end or side of the box and then looped around either of the projections D or D The end can be brought in between such projections and ;looped around either one of them when the box is securely cross fastened. It only remains to simply detach the cord from its engagement between the parts D and A when the box can be readily opened.
It is obvious that the prongs C and C might be dispensed with and the body A fastened by a button or rivet to the box or package and it is also obvious that the details of the form can be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
The operation of the invention is obvious from the foregoing description.
Having .thus described my invention, what I desire to claim is,-
A fastening device, comprising a blank of sheet metal having at one end a slot gradually narrowing toward the edge of the blank and being notched at the opposite end by a curvilinear notch to form twoextending parts, the body portion of the blank being provided with integral fastening means for securing the device to a box or other article and the blank being foldable near its center to bring the extending parts yieldingly against the body portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR M. COMSTOCK.
