WITNESSES T o allwliom 'it may concern Beit known that I, EDWARD P.
a citizen ofv the United States, residing. at
NewYork, `coniity of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certaink new and `useful-,1.Improvements in Rotary Printing Machines,.fully described and represented. in the folowing specification and they aceonipanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sheetffed rotary-printingfinachiiies. i i
The object ofthe invention, generally considered, may. be said to be to improve sheet` fed rotary printing machines of the class in.
Y which sheets are fed to the sheet receiving in certain parts, improvements and conibinations as will bel hereinafter fully. described' cylinder in succession from a plurality of different sources or piles, the improvement being of such a character as'ioincrease the speed' of operationof such machines and to render them certain in operation andl and then specifically pointed out. p
Referringto the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of so much. of a rotary sheet fed printing machine `embodying` thelinvention 4as is necessary to `an understanding thereof, the registering.r de.
vices being shown as moved back to perm-it access to the sheet receiving cylinder. Fig.

Specification of Letters latent. P'atenfed Fei), 19.14 Appiieation inea naves, mi. semina-cesser r printing couple, the companion cylinder bemg marked 2. The cylinder 1 is :noun-teflon :a shaft 3 and the cylinder 2 on 'a shaftirthe ibushing of this shaft being markedv 5 and the box 6.'. The shafts and their bearings. are .mounted in a side frame, indicated at?, as
inusual in such constructions. v A Y n the best `constructions. eiiriloodyingl the be providedy with 'a single set of sheet re# ceiving devices which vmay consist of ordigrippers being mounted on a shaft 9. When, as in the the iaiventioisr,l the :sheet receiving cylinder receives the sheets onl successive revolutions at different points the revolution', .the sheets Ybeing supplied from different seni-cee, means will' be grippers at the seet receiving points, Which mea-nes may be varied widely in construction.
inthe particular construction illnstimted, the sheets4 are intended -tobe fedvto the invention, the sheet receivingcylinder will .particular construction selected to ililiistrate rovided for actuating the cylinder alternately from two sources on. rz:
successive revolutions of the .cylinder and the grippers are actuated at different points on successive revolutions: It Willbeuinder.- stood that sheets may be fed from more than two sources, however, in which case the mim ber of taking points for the .gippers will be correspondingly lincreased. i As' shown, the mechanism for operating the gri-ppers includes the. ordinary. tumbler -bloch- 10 .mounted on the end of the shaft 9the tumf .bler block 10 being operated loyy pins 1l., 12 extending through openings in thefranie; These ypins are alternately ,operated by a 'cross-barll carrying operating pins Hen.-
gaging grooves in col-lars 15, lmounted'oii the pins/11,y l2. rl`.-`he eross-bar l-lis carried. on; a vertical shaft secured in .abear' ing- 17 secured to-.the side frame, this shaft having an operatingarni 18 securedihereto which carries .a follower 19 working in the groove-of a'c'am 20 fast on the shaft 3.-! vrThis `cam groove is a double one, as shown in Fig.
4, with the usual ,cross-over in which `.the follower 19 ,Works AAs. the follower `comes up one side y,of the groove it. crosses over-at tlie'cross-overto the othersideof the groove and follows that side ofthe grooveuutil the next revolution ofk the cylinder, when it comes upy and again crosses at the cross-over to `the first side of the groove. `Thisresults in animating` the cross-bar 13. so as tocause iio ' l. noemer .n
one of the o erating pins, as l1, to come in fore operated to its in position at alternate revolutions `of the cylinder. This gripper operating mechanism, generally considered, is old in connection with pressesot' the two-revolution type and any other suitable mechanism may be substituted therefor.
anism Will be provided for openingvthe grippers 1n order to ydeliver the sheets, butLas such mechanisms are Well-understood inthe art, the illustration `thereof is omitted .inv .theinterest of brevity and clearness.
In the particular construction illustrated, the sheets are intended tobe delivered fto a delivery cylinder indicated at 25.` 'In the particular construction illustrated, `as before stated, the sheets are delivered tothefsheet-v receiving cylinder at different oints on suc-` cessive revolutions of the eylin er, the sheets being obtained from any suitable sources, such, for instance, as automatic-sheet feeding mechanisms, not shown; y
When the lnventlonisvembodied in Inachines of the class indicated, the mechanism r will include a plurality ofsets of sheet regisv tering devices located at or' near the sheet` embodying the invention these devices Will be so constructed and mounted as to enable them to be moved back -outof theway in order to alford easy access tothe sheet re-l ceiving cylinder. This is particularly important in cases Where the sheet receiving cylinder is, as in the construction shown, one
of the cylinders of a printing couple, as in such cases ready access to the cylinder is desirable on account of making-ready. ln the particular .construction illustrated, the sheets frornfoney source are received on sup porting fingers 26 mounted on a cross-bar 27 supported in armsl28 Whichform a part of twoframes 29, these frames constituting a carriage.
' whichy coperatevvith the supporting arms 26 vconsist of lingers 30 adjustably connected by screWsBl to larms-32 extendin from a shaft 33 mounted in the carriage rames 29 (see Fig. 8). The sheets from the other source are received von supporting fingers 34 mounted on a shaft 35 supported in brackets 36 fixed to the carriage frames 29. For reasons which will be hereinafter referred to, inthe best construction embod ing theinvention'this shaft-Will be provi ed with'an operating arm'f37 carrying aroll 38 which runs on the usual bearer of the cylinder 1.
The sheet registering `dev1ces A 'spring 39 is, or may be, employed for holding the armin such pbsition ras to causew 1 the'roll 38 to cntact'with the bearer. The sheet registering devices which coperate With 'the support 34 include, in the construction shown, fingers 40 adj ustably secured b `screws L1 to anarm 42 mounted on a sha t A 2.
t3 supported inthecarriage frames 29 (see Fig.--3).
. The carriage frami-s 29, in the particular It will be understood that suitablelmech construction illustrated,` are provided with ribs 4A (see Fig. 2) vvhlch engage between a `rib 45 formed on the .side frame 7, andarib 461 bolted to the frame 7, l,this construction enabling thecarria et0 be slid, toward andf' away from` the `s eet. receiving ,cylinder.-
Means may be provided for moving .the carriage. While thesemeansmay be. of any suitable construction, as shown each of the,
side frames is provided"wifth a rack-bar 47 ibolted thereto, these rackjbars, beinggenf.
gaged by pinions 48 onashaft'f49 extending i lacrossand mounted` in the carriagefjrames'-, 1 29. This shaft,..as illustrated, ispr'ovided 1 with a squared vheed 50 to'vvhichA a wrench or crank may be applied.. It is apparent. that'when the shaftis rotated, thecarriage will be caused to` travel. r
vIt will., of course, `be understood thatthe l y .3. registering devices Whatever be `theirfconfV struction should be `so Lactuated as to ,be in o `operative position when the sheet `is regis-` tered and then shouldfbe .moved into inopfy erative position tok permit the sheet-,to be ytaken `by the v.sheet takingdevices on `the sheet @receiving cylinder. vThe actuating mechanism employed for the registering dea g vices may be varied within Wide limits.` In the best constructions embodying the invention the actuator mechanism should be common to the sets of registering devices. As shown, the actuator. mechanism includes a shaft y55 supported in brackets 56 secured to the side frames. This shaft, as illustrated, is provided Wit-h` adriving gear 57 meshing Witha gear 58 mounted on a reduced extension ofthe shaft 4L..V The 'gearing should be such that the shaft,` is -driven att-a slower speed. than -thespeed of the cylinders. =As illustrated, the ,gearing is "so proportioned as to drive the shaft y55 at one half the speed `of the cylinders. This shaft 55 carries two actuating cams 59,- 60 which cams, through suitable connections, o erate the twoisets of registering devices il ustrated, The con- 120 nections by whichthe actuator mechanisml` I veffects the operation of the registering-devices maybe varied, and will vary-imac cordance with the character of the actuator mechanism employed. In-the particular `12's construction illustrated, the `operatingconnoefarol having'i arolliwhieh runs'on the cam 59. The operating-connections torY the other-set of registering'dcviccs include a short shaftv 66 mounted 1n a bearingl '67 carried on the an operatingarm: 68' which isv connected by a link 69'to al short arm 7() fast'v on afhub or collarA 71. This hub' or collar is loose on the sha-tt 61. and has extending from it an operatingarm' 72.. provided with a roll 73 whichV runs on the: cam 60. Springplungers,
' generally indicated at 74, may be employed,
- if desired, for-holding the operating arms 64 and 72 down on the cams.'
When the operating connectionsl include shafts such as have been referred to, vand the regis-tering devices are 'also controlled from shorter vshafts and whenthe shafts which `control the registering devices-are mounted, as in the construction illustrated, in the movable carriage, the connections between the shafts should be of such a character as to enable the carriage to be readily moved.
As illustrated (see Figs. 5 and-6)` `each of the shafts 33, 48' is provided with a head *75' having a grooveti, and eachof the shafts 61, 66 is provided with ahead 77 havin a tongue 78. `In the vbest constructions t is tongue and groove -connection should be a tapered one, as shown, so that lwhen the carriage is moved to bring the registering devices generally into operative position ythe tongue andgroove connection may actas astop to properlyyposition the carriage andl nism and the means referred to may,1vvhen employed, 'be of any suitable character. `In the constructionv illustrated, t-he cylinder 1 is provided with an eccentric bearing 79" having'an operating arm 80 connected with the usual operating mechanism, not shown, this throw-ott mechanism being of a Well vunderfstoodf type. In order toshift theregistering mechanism, the bearing, in the-construction shown, is providedvwith a stud 81:v which, as the cylinder moves under the operation of 'the throw-olf mechanism, contacts with a lever. 82 pivoted at 83 to the frame. vThis -leverfhas connected to it a rod 84; connected iii-turn. toi a. bent lever 85 pivoted on the shaft-61..
