To all whom it may concern Be it known` that 1 OLE EVINRUDE, a citiz'eii of the United States, and resident` of Milwaukee inthe county of Milwaukee State of Wisconsin, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements arine Propulsion Mechanism; and I do hereby declar that the following is a full, clear, and
exact descriptionthereof. j
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference tothe accompanying drawin s and pointed outin the claims of this specication, its main object being to provide for ready compensation for wear caused by end-thrust of propellershafts and gear-thrust thereon, especially in the marine propulsion mechanism disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,001,260,
are correspondingly granted ugust 22, 1911. ,V
Figure 1 of the drawings representsywa partly sectional side elevation of marine propulsion mechanism similar to that disclosed in the Letters Patent aforesaid and embodying the improvements herein specified; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal sectional view of an adjustable bushing constituting a novel essential part of said mechanism, and Fig.v3, a cross-section ofthe bushing indicated by line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Referring by numerals and letters to' the drawings, 25 indicates a lower sliding section of a vertical engine-shaft, 15 a stationary tube concentric with the shaft, 16- another tube adjustable on-the one aforesaid, 17 a gear-case having a shaft-bearing extension 17 thereof upon which the lower end of the tube 16 is detachably secured, 26 a propeller, 26 the propeller-shaft in I nitergear connection with said sliding section of the engine-shaft, 27 apump-cylinder, 28 a hose leading from the puinp-cylinder and 29 the pump-piston operated by a cam 30 on tileflub -of the gear-wheel of said propellers a The general construction and arrangement of parts to which reference is had in the foregoing is similar to what is disclosed in the Letters Patent above noted, and they indicated. Like in said Letters Patent, the tube 16 is provided with a ri id outer collar 18 adjustable longitudin ly of a vsupporting bracket arm 13 but this detail constitutes no part of what is herein claimed, and is only incidentally shown.
`series of apertures 0 VThe essential novel feature of what is herein claimed is an adjustable bushing B in the forward horizontal bearing-box exid of the 'gear-,case 17, the bushing being arrangev to -have its rim 'at one end in contact with a shoulder fast on a driven-shaft to' thus r'esist gear-thrust `on the shaft, and it is 'preferab e to provide said gear-case witha depeilding. guard-iin F in advance 'of the proe er.
The bushing B is externally screw-threaded and closed at its exclude water from the gear-case, this end being preferably cone-pointed and provided with a kerfb wi h which to engagea turning tool such as a screw-driver,.bu`t without departure from my invention as .herein claimed, the closed outer end of said bushing may be otherwise adapted for engagement with a turning-tool. The bore of the foi'- ward bearing-box end of the gear-case is screw-threaded to match the thread of the bushing, and said bushing is set to have its inner end in opposition to the hub of the propeller-shaft gear-wheel that constitutes a wear-.shoulder on said shaft, it being held in adjusted position by a set-screw S with which the gear-case is provided. The propeller-shaft has end clearance in the bushing, and said bushing is provided with a at predetermined regular intervals spirally of its circumference, these' apertures being for the engagement of the set-screw S in serial order beginning with the one aftermost. However other means may be employed for securing the bushing in rotary adjusted position without departure from my invention as herein claimed.
Y Coincidental to end-thrust of the propeller-shaft there is wear of the rim of the after end of the bushing and incidental to gear-thrust on said shaft there is also wear upon the underlying portion of said bush? ing. To take up said wear, the set-screw 'S is loosened and the bushing is` adjusted aft Vin the gear-case ter turn of the bushing in the proper direction will suiiice to compensate for the aforesaid wear, and hence the apertures in said bushing for engagement serially of the set-- screw S may be at quarter intervals'ofa circle as herein` shown, or they may be at eater or less intervals apart.
The bushing takes the wear that would Patented Feb; it; ia'ia; I
forward end tothereby from time to time. A quarv otherwise come upon the gear-ease, making it necessary to renew the same from time to time, at no greater expense than is involved inthe substitution of a new for a worn bushing. The bushing also renders hardening of the forward bearin -boX end of the gear-case unnecessary, an said bushing is of wear-resistingmaterial in order to prolong its utility.
I claim:`
l. In a marine propulsion mechanism, a gear-case, a bushing longitudinally adjustable in the forward bearing-box end of the gear-case and having a closed forward end adapted forengagement with an adjustingtool, a propeller-shaft having an end thereof in the bushing, and a wear-shoulder on the shaft opposing the rimof the after end of said bushing uponwhich it has thrust. f
2. In a marine propulsion mechanism, a' gear-case, a bushing longitudinally and rotatably adjustable in the forward bearing-box end of the gear-case and having a closed forward end adapted for engagement with an adjusting-tool, a propeller-shaft having an end thereof in the bushing, and a wearshouldei' on the shaft opposing the rim of the after end of said bushing upon which il; has thrust, the longitudinal adjustment off the bushing serving to compensate for the wear of said end thereof and its rotary adjustment serving to compensate for wear therein under said shaft upon which gearethrust is exerted.
3.` In a marine pn pulsion mechanism, gear-case, a propeller-shaft, a bushing longitudinally and rotatably adjustable in the forward bearing-box end of the gear-case and having a closed forward end adapted for engagement with a turning-tool, the after rim-end of the bushing being in contact with a shaft-shoulder to resist gear-thrust on said shaft, and means foi` securing the bushing in its adjusted position.
In a marine propulsion mechanism, a gear-case, a propeller-shaft, a bushing in screw-thread enga ement with the forward bearing-box end o the gear-case for aft adjustment to compensate for Wear occasioned by end-thrust of said shaft and gear-thrust thereon, the bushing being provided with apertures at intervals spirally of its circumference, and a set-screw with said gear-case for engagement of the bushing apertures in serial order.
5. In a marine propulsion mechanism, a gear-case, a propeller-shaft, a bushing in screw-thread engagement with the forward bearing-box end of the gear-case and having a closed cone-pointed end provided with a kerf in which to engage a turning-tool, and means for securing the bushing in adjusted position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin in the presence of two witnesses.
OLE EVINRUDE.
