UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. COOPER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIG-NOR. TO THE AMERICAN LAUNDRY MACHINERY COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
GARMENT-HANGER.
My present invention relates to improve-- ments in garment hangers, and more particularly to the type shown in Letters Patent No. 822,604, granted June 5, 1906 to Arthur T. Hagen covering a clothes drier for-use in connection with drying apparatus for laun-.
dries, and it has for its object the provision of a novel form and arrangement of parts whereby the articles may be gripped or held more securely, and readily released.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construct on which will enable the parts to be more readily assembled and to be manufactured at a comparatively lower cost.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure l is a view in side elevation, illustrating one embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through Fig. 1, with the upper part of the support broken away; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line :r-m of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line g y of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line aa of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 6-?) of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a similar view on the line 00 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts.
In the present application, I have disclosed my invention in a preferred embodiment, as applied to a clothes hanger for use in connection with laundry drying appara tus of the endless conveyer type, the same, in the present instance, including a support 1 provided at its lower end with a yoke 2,

within which the arms carrying the gripping members or jaws are pivot'ally arranged.
The hanger is preferably provided with two pairs of pivoted arms, and forconvenience in the present application I will describe one of these pairs and its cooperating parts. The arms are designated at 3 and t, respectively, and are formed from blanks of sheet metal, these being cut and shaped to effect the desired conformation of the arms, which are preferably substantially U-shaped in cross section and provided on' their adjacent open edges with inwardly extending flanges 5 for a purpose now to be described. The arms 3 and 4: are pivoted to the yoke 2 below and above each other, respectively, so as to obtain relative sliding. movement .-be-
tween them coincident with their swinging movement, and to this end, in the present embodiment, the lower arm 3 is provided with upwardly and outwardly extending projecting portions 6 which extend between the flanges 5 on the upper arm and are adapted to engage the upper side of said flanges, as shown in Fig. 7 whereby parallel movement of the arms is effected.
The upper arm 4 is provided with a downwardly extending portion 7 which cooperates with the outer extremity of the arm 3 to grip the article therebetween, and in order that the clothes may be more securely held, and further, that they may not be damaged by contact, while wet, with metallic parts, I provide detachable gripping members or jaws, formed preferably of some vitreous material, such as glass, and adapted to be held by the pivoted arms. To this end, in the present embodiment jaws 8 are provided having engaging faces which are preferably convex and corrugated to secure a more effective grip on the article to be held. The jaws 8 have reduced portions for engagement with the flanges 5 of the arms, and lugs 9 are arranged in the rear of said reduced portions, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 4, so as to hold the jaws in their proper positions, and prevent acci dental removal. and nuts are provided for holding the arms and jaws in their proper cooperative positions, and'the jaws may be removed by loosening the attaching screws sufficiently to Suitable adjusting screws release them, it being necessary to separate the Walls slightly, to remove the jaws from the upper arms.
By constructing the arms of sheet metal, as herein shown and described, I am able to produce a hanger of much lighter weight, and at a smaller comparative cost than heretofore. And by the provision of the gripping members or jaWs, as set forth, it is possible to hold the articles more securely and without subjecting them to the undesirable eflects attendant upon the use of metallic jaws, and in case of breakage of the jaws, they may readily be replaced without difficulty.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a hanger, the combination with a support, of arms formed of sheet metal pivoted one above the other on different centers on the support, said arms being substantially U-shaped in cross section and having inwardly extending flanges at their open edges, and cooperating jaws removably secured to the arms and held in position by said flanges.
2. In a hanger, the combination with a support, of arms formed of sheet metal pivoted one above the other on different cen- Gopies or this patentimay be obtaired for ters on the support, said arms being substantially U-shaped in cross section andhaving inwardly extending flanges at their open edges, extensions formed on the lower arm and extending between and over the flanges on the upper arm, and cooperating jaws secured to the arms and hel'din position by the flanges.
In a hanger, the combination with a support, of arms formed of sheet metal pivoted one above the other on different celr ters on the support, said arms being substantially U-shaped in cross section and having inwardly extending flanges at their open edges, and cooperating jaws provided with lugs adapted to engage the flanges on the arms.
a. A hanger comprising a support, arms formed integrally of sheet metal and pivoted one above .the other on different centers on the support, said arms being substantially U-shaped in cross section, and cooperating jaws removably secured between the walls of the arms.
