A clearing or resetting gear wheel 14 is keyed at 15 to the axle 7 and provided with a ratchet surface 16, coperating with a cam .l2a which ratchet surface andcam are engagedby the pawl 13 of the adjacent adding gear wheel 8 as illustrated in Fig. 7. At the opposite end, the axle 7 has keyed thereto for longitudinal adjustments a manipulating knob 17 having a locking stud 18 at one side which may be projected into a keeper opening 19 in the head 2O of the adding. carriage. A stop washer 21 of the axle has one end of a spring 22 engaged thereagainst while the opposite end of said spring is seated against the knob 7 whereby the stud 18 of the latter will' Abe properly held in said opening 19 and the axle normally held against rotation. Now, through the fact that the gear wheels 8 are mounted to fr'eely revolve on the axle 7; that they are associated with the cams 13, and the pawls 13a, as described, and further through the provision of the lixed gear 14, ratchet surface 16, cam 16d and a manipulating knob 17, it will be evident, that, by first drawing the knob to a released or retracted position, and then turning said knob, to revolve the axle 7 in a counter clockwise direction the ratchet surface of the wheel 14 will be engaged by the pawl 13El of the right 'adjacent adding wheel 8 and as the movement of theJ axle is continued all of the companion pawls of the adding mechanism vwill be moved, in proper turn, to operate and reverse the direction of motion of the preceding adding wheels, with a resultant restoration of the Zero indications of saidy wheels 8 to their initial positions behind the view openings of the carriage. Yieldable dogs 23 upon the shield 3 of the carriage engage with the wheels 8 whereby to secure regularity of movement and to compensate for wear of the wheels and thereby insure their positive action and encourage proper recording movements of said wheels.
The transmitting mechanism of the machine comprises a transmitting axle 24, which is provided intermediate of its ends with a gear wheel 25 which is normally free to revolve on the axle and which is shown to include an integral ratchet wheel 26, which is adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed dog or pawl 27 pivoted to one side of a wheel 28 ixedly mounted on the axle and provided with a peripheral substantially V-recess 29 to receive one end of a rocking escapement- 30. The .transmitting axle 24 is provided with ixed end pinions 31, which are arranged in intermeshing engagement with the teeth of vertically-moving rack bars 32 of an actuating frame 33. This frame isn mounted in suitable guides 34 in the casing 1 and connected with a sustaining spring 35 of vsaid casing 1 whereby the frame 33 is normally held in an elevated position. The adding-keys 36 which are marked from one to zero are mounted to slide vertically through guide openings 37 in the top of the casing 1 and through similar openings 38 in an extension bracket 39 of-said casing. -These keys are provided with lower .horizontal arms. Y40 which areterminally located directly above the plane of the pressure bar 41 of the vertically sliding rack frame 33 and at different distances therefrom so that the keys when depressed to their limit, control the relative distances through which the rack is depressed, with a resultant proportionate transmission of motion to the adding wheels. Such construction is common to all of the keys, excepting the zero key. This key is terminally provided with spaced lugs 42 between which is extended the long arm 43 of a rocking lever 44'on the axle 24 of the transmitting mechanism.
The escapement dog 30 is pivoted at 45 to the casing 1, and as shown, said-escapev ment is provided lwith a depending arm 4G, which is connected witha spring 47 of the casing, the latter exerting its influence to hold said escapement engaged in the keeper recess 29 in the wheel 28. The lever 44 carries a short arm 48 which is adapted to engage the det-ent 30 and to move said dctent in one direction when the zero key is' depressed. The keys 36 are normally held in elevated positions through the medium of springs 49 which are secured at 50 sol to the lower ends of the keys, while lat 51,
the springs arel secured to the'extensionv 39 of the casing 1. .Stop projections 52 on the keys are adapted to engage against the top walls of the casing 1 whereby the return movement of each key is limited under the purpose of its spring 49.
The carriage 3 has one of its guide flanges 4 providedl with a longitudinal slot 53 whose opposite side walls are provided with teeth 54, the stop shoulders or surfaces 55 of the teeth of one wall being disposed out of the plane of the shoulders 55 of the teeth on the oppsite wall of the slot. In other words, the companion rows of teeth are arranged substantially in staggered relation. A spring 56 is connected at one end to the carriage 3 and at its opposite end to one of the end walls of the casing 1, whereby its pressure will be exerted to move the carriage toward the left of the machine. A linger piece 57 of the carriage may be operated v by the thumb when it is desired to move the carriage in van opposite direction.
