DEVICE FOR SHARPENING SAWS.
- the device in part section, Fig. 3 is a section along the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing the parts in different relation, Fig. 5 is a detail of the saw.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several drawings.
The base A which may be mounted upon the table or bed of a grinding machine or upon a workbench, as the case may be, is adjustably held thereon by the bolts A in the slots A is provided with the upwardly extending flanges A A, which are recessed at A A to engage the downwardly and outwardly extending lugs A A on the bottom of the sliding table A and carries the adjustably mounted stop A held in position by the bolt A and in opposition to the downwardly extending lug A on the slid ing table A. The sliding table A is provided with the transverse slot B in which is slidably mounted the bolt B terminating at one end in the eye B and held in position by the lock nuts B B. The hollow block B from which project two parallel lugs B rotatably mounted on the eye B by the bolt B is provided at its bottom with the lug B in opposition to the slot B. The plug B which is slidably mounted in the block B carries the conical surface B. The circular saw B is held centrally in position on the conical surface B by the cylindrical nut B on the screw B. The arm C is slidably mounted upon the base A being held in position thereon by the bolt C engaging the slot C and is provided with the upwardly extending hollow cylinder C in which is slidably mounted the rod C held in position by the set screw 0 and terminating in the eye C which supports the table C held in position thereon by the lugs C and bolt 0. The plate (3 is adjustably Specification of Letters Patent.

held upon the edge of the table C by the screw C and is provided with the upwardly extending saw engaging stop C The emery wheels E and E form a part of any suitable or usual grinding machine which in this case is diagrammatically illustrated by the wheels themselves. V
It will be evident that while I have shown in my drawings an operative" device, still numerous changes might be made in the size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing materially from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
The use and operation of my device are as follows: WVhen a circular saw is to be sharpened it is removed from its arbor and placed upon my device being centered upon the conical surface B at the top of the sliding block 13 and held upon such surface by the cylindrical nut B which is mounted on the screw B projecting therefrom. The plug is then dropped into place in the hollow cylinder B and the cylinder so adjusted in position in the slot B in the sliding table that when the table is carried forward to the end of its excursion, which,
excursion is limited by the stop A on the base A engaging the lug A the saw tooth will just engage the grinding or sharpening wheel E at the proper point. The adjustable stop C, which is mounted on the base, is then so positioned that when the carriage is moved forward the saw will overhang the table C from which the stop projects and the stop will prevent rotation of the saw beyond that point at which the face of the tooth will be sharpened. When the sharpening of each individual tooth has been completed the table is carried back and the saw rotated until the sharpened tooth is in position to engage the stop and the next tooth is then ground in the same way. When the saw is to be jointed, that is, when the tops of the teeth are to be ground off so as to make all the diameters of the saw equal, a round or flat wheel is substituted for the shapedgrinding wheel, is brought into opposition to the saw, and
the saw is then rotated allowing the wheel to grind ofi the face of each tooth. If the teeth are to be ground at an angle, as in the I case of a crosscut saw the lock nuts B B carrylng the eye bolt B are rotated to raise or lower this bolt thus holding the block B at an angle to the table and therefore maintaining the saw itself at the desired angle, as indicated in Fig. 4L.
I claim:
A saw sharpening device comprising the following elements, a grinding wheel, a base adjustably mounted so as to move to and from the wheel along a line at right angles to its axis, flanges projecting upwardly from the base and shaped so as to each form a track at its upper edge, a slotted table mounted so as to slide laterally on said track and a stop adjustably mounted on the base and a lug downwardly depending from the carriage in opposition to said stop so as to limit the motion of the carriage toward. the grinding wheel, a vertically adjustable rod mounted in the slot in the carriage and provided with an eye at its upper end, a saw centering and supporting device pivotally mounted on said eye and resting upon the carriage and engaging the slot therein, a saw supporting device adjustably mounted on the base and adapted to support the saw at a distance from its center when the saw is mounted in position and a tooth engaging guide finger mounted on said saw supp01't ing device and adjacent the grinding wheel substantially as shown and described.
