To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, Tnannnus F. MAC- Evor, citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Fixtures, of which the {following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wall fixtures and the like, such for example as soap dishes, towel holders, tumbler holders, etc., and comprises a fixture of the class described havingl improved' fastening means, whereby the detachment of the fixture 1s made practically impossible without the u se of violence, once the fixture has been put in place.
My invention consists in the novel fastening means for wall fixtures and the like, hereinafter described, and set forth 1n the appended claims.
The object of my invention is to provide' an improved and simple fastening for wall fixtures, etc., which shall make very diliicult the removal of thek fixture, once it has been put in place.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, and will then point out the novel features in claims.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation and partial 'section of one form of wall bracket embodying my invention, the sectional portion of the figure showing the fastening means employed. Fig. 2 shows a face View of the base plate of such bracket. Fig; 2 'shows a longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1. and shows the key hole adapted to receive the expanding key. Fig. 3 shows a rear view of that base plate. Fig. shows a central vertical section of another form of wall fixture provided with fastening means embodying my invention. F ig. 4"- shows a longitudinal section of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 4, and shows the key hole adapted to receive the expanding key. Fig. 5 shows a front view of the wall fixture shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a central section of a portion of the base plate of a wall fixture and of an expansion sleeve which may he emplojvfedv when the lixture is to be applied to a tile or cement or stone surface or thc like: Fig. 7 shows a side view of the expansion sleeve. and Fig. 8 a rear end view thereof. Fig. 9 shows a face view of the head of one form of. screw which may be employed as the expanding key. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary detail Section illustrating an alternative construction.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, nu-
.meral 1 designates the base plate of the wall fixture-there shown, said base plate haring a central screw threaded recess 2, at the bottom of which is a hole 3 through which a suitable fastening screw 4 may be passed for the purpose of securing the base plate to a wall, partition, etc.; the head of the screw lylng within theI recess 2. The said base plate isprcvidedfurther, to one side of the hole 3, with an eccentric spur 5 which fits into a suitable hole in the wall or partition,
thereby preventingthe base plate from being turned once it has been applied.
6 designates a supporting member (a post or bracket in thek construction shown) provided with a screw 'threaded boss screwy ing intothe screw threaded recess 2, and which, when so connected to the hase plate l, covers the head of the screw 4, thus entirely concealing the means by which the base plate is secured to the wall or partition or the like. To prevent the post or bracket 6 from being unscrewe'd once it has been put in place, a diagonal hole 7 (Fig. 22) is provided which hole passes through both the base plate l and the end of the post or bracket 6, and is of inwardly daring contour; and after the base plate 1 has been secured in piace, and the post G has been screwed home in .the recess 2 of said base plate, a split expanding key 8 is placedin this hole fa'. ln the construction shown in Fig. l this key has the form of a sere 'g but in the construction shown in Fig. et hereinafter described, the key, there designated by numeral 8, has the form of a split expanding pin. Either construction of key may be used, as preferred. If a screw is employed as the key, the key slot in the end of such screw is preferably shallow, so Y that, once screwed home.l it is practicably impossible to remove such screw by means of an ordinary screw driver; or. as illustrated in Fig. 9, the screw, there designated by numeral 8b, may have a. head of such form that special means is required for turning it. in the construct-ion shown in iFi'g. 9 the head of the screw is provided with two very small recesses 9 which may he Aengaged only by a special driver having projecting pins corresponding to such holes.
The' device shown in Figs. i and 5 is' simi"- lar to that shown in Figs.` land 2, didering principally in form and proportions of the parts. It comprises a base plate la, a face plate or supporting member 6*1 having a central boss 6b adapted to screw into the recess 2 of said base plate l, said base plate having a spur 5a adapted to lit into a correj spondlng recess formed in the wall or partition to which the base plate .la
is being a plied. As in the construction shown in Fiig. l, a-"screw 4 is provided for holding the base plate in place. A suitable flaring hole 7a (see Fig. A1 1?)v is provided at the edge of the combined d evice 1-6a, this hole lying artly in the base plate 1* and partly in the iace plate 6a; andv into this hole a suitable expan g plate l has een secured in place, and after the face plate 6'* has been secured thereto.
.'When my improved Wall fitting is to be applied tb -a tile, cement, brick, or stone wall or partition, and `therefore when the use of an ordinary wood screw for securing 2e provide `in-such wall or 'p the base plate is not practicable by itself, I artition a recess of sullicient .size to receive an expansion sleeve 1.0, shown more clearly in Figs. 7 and 8.V These expansion sleeves are well lmown. The expansion sleeve having been set in place, the base plate l is applied and Athe screw 4 is screwed into the expansion sleeve 10 so-expandingthe same, `as indicated ink ig. 6. It being practically impossible to pull such an expansion sleeve out of the socket in which it Ais fitted, once that sleeve hasbeen expanded, and the head of the screw 4 being concealed once the parts ofthe wall fixture have been assembled, it
then becomes substantially impofssibleto remove the wall fixture, even' when secured to a tile, cement, brick or stone surface. l
Various devices may be supported by the bracket 6, or face late 6. 'In Fig. l I have indicated in dotte lines one device 11 which ma be supported by the post or bracket 6, and, in Fig. 4 I have indicated a `ortion of ay wire basket or the like 12 Whic may be su ported by the face platel 6a.
Y t is obvious that the particular device supported b the wall iixture is immaterial. It will also e obvious that thewall fixtures shown are clearly adaptedto be secured to a floor or ceiling; therefore I do not wish it vto be understood that, ,in terming my device a-wall fixture, I am limiting' my inventzion to fixtures intended to be secured to walls only. To the contrary my invention is inclusiveof fixtures designed to be secured to doors, ceilings, doors, desks, cabinets, and all other objects to which such fixtures are pplicable'. But while I prefer to so secure e base and supportlng'member together that, when once so secured, they may not be separated and may not be removed hom the surface to which they had been secured,
in 8a' is fitted after the basel jointly `with a key-opening located -when such key except by violence, I may' at times dispense with means for so loclnng the base and supportin Y member together that they ma not therea er be separated except by vio ence. In many cases, as for example, when fixtures are to be secured to a tile wall, it is desirable to secure a base to such Wall and then to secure the main supporting member to such base; and in such cases it is desirable that the means by which the base is secured to the Wall shall be concealed by the supporting key is fitted; or I may provide a key hole.`
adapted to receive a -plain guished from an exp shows a construction 8b is provided.
What I claim is l. A fixture such as described comprising a base provided with means whereb it may be secured to'a suitable object, and porting member, said base and supporting member having the one a. screw-threaded socket and the other a correspondingly screwthreaded boss, whereby said base and supporting member may be secured to er, said supporting member arranged w connected to the base to -cover and 'prevent access to the fastening means for said base; said base and supporting member provided partly said base and partly in said supporting member and adapted to` receive a key,
key as distinending key. Fig. 10
wherein a plain key has been put in place the disconnection of such base and supporting member is precluded. l 2. A fixture such as described comprising a base provided with means whereb it may be secured to a suitable object, `an porting member, said base and Supporting member having the one a sc threaded socket and the lother a corres ondlingly screw-threaded boss, whereby sai base and supporting member maybe secured together, said supporting member arranged when so connected'to the base to cover and prevent access to the fastening means'ffor said base, said base andvsupporting member provided jointlyv with a key-opening located partly in saidbase and partly in said suporting member and adapted to receive a ey, and a key in such key opening, whereby the disconnection of such base and support ing member is precluded. A
4. A ixture such as described comprising a base provided with a screw-threaded socket and withA a screw hole at the bottom of such socket adapted to receive ascrew by which said base may be secured to a suitable object, and a supporting member having a screw threaded boss adapted to screw into said socket and thereby to cover the head of such screw, said base and supporting member provided jointly with a key-opening located partly in said base and partly in said supportin member and adapted to receive an expan ing key, and an expanding key within such key-opening, whereby disconnection of such base and supporting member is precluded.
5. A ixturefsuch .as described comprising a base, provided with means whereby it may be secured to a suitable object, and a supaccess to the fastening means for said base. I
6. A fixture such as described, comprising a base provided with a screw hole adapted to receive a screw whereby said base may be secured to a suitable object, and -a supporting member, said base and supporting member having the one a screw-threaded socket, and the other a correspondingly screwthreaded boss, whereby said base and support-ing member may be secured together, said supporting member arranged When so connected to the base to cover and prevent access to a screw located in the'said screw hole of said base.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
