To all who ht it may concern Be it known that I, KIYoYn TANIMURA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 13 Sanchome, Tamachi, Shibaku, city of Tokyo, Empire of Japan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Plaited Hats, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of plaited hats, wherein the braids or tapes are made of a plurality of vegetable fibers, such as, cotton yarn, hemp yarn, or koyori (Japanese paper twisted into a yarn), which fibers are adapted to stick to each other to form a strand of flexible character when treated with a mixture of alcohol, ether, acetone, Castor oil, zinc white. or substitute of zinc white, into which either nit-rated cotton or collodion cotton is dissolved.
The object of my invention is to reduce materially the cost of manufacturing by using such cheap materials as enumerated. above, and further to give to the finished goods the same beautiful appearance as that of a Panama hat, which stands washing without discoloration.
In the. accompanyng drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat. Fig: 2 is a strand of the braid, shown on an enlarged scale.
In carrying out my invention, I employ as a base or core of the strand, a suitable number of fibers of cotton yarn, or hemp yarn, or koyori, as shown at A, which, when treated with a previously mixed solution of the hereinafter described compounds will stick to each other to form a strand B of fair flexibility suited for plaiting, as required. I he proportions upon which my said mixed solution is based should be substantially as follows: nit-rated cotton 100 by weight, alcohol 120 by Weight, other 180 by weight, castor oil 300 by weight, acetone 10 by weight, and suitable quantities of zinc white, or substitute of zinc white.

I have found that the same result can be obtained by using collodion cotton in place of the nitrated cotton, and in case where the last named material is substituted the proportions of the mixture shall be then varied as follows. The acetone, at the same time, dispensed with, thus: collodion cotton 30 by weight, alcohol e20 by Weight, ether 180 by weight, castor oil 300 by weight, and suitable quantities. of Zinc white, or substitute of zinc white. The fibers A will be then treated by immersing the same in the bath of the said dissolved compounds until each fiber is perfectly saturated and completely covered with thin layer or film. The fibers so treated will be then taken out again and dried to form the strand I) of required size and luster.
The strands obtained according to this process are very flexible and tenacious so that they can be readily utilized either by first braiding the same to form a tape of suitable size or by plaiting directly to form the hat G according to the circumstances.
The goods produced by this process will possess the same beautiful appearance of :1 Panama hat possessing almost equal strength and durability, and standing washing without discoloration.
Having thus fully described my invention and the manner of carrying the same into effect, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A flexible waterproof plaitcd hat comprising individual fiexible waterproof strands and a waterproof binding agent binding said strands together forming a hat capable of washing without discolora tion.
