WINDOVT-SCREEN.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIE S. P111012, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Dougherty and State of Georgia, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in lfi indow-Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to window screens and has for its general object to provide a simple, efiicient, and generally improved screen of the type employing one or more laterally yielding, auxiliary side bars.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away, of a screen and associated parts in place in an ordinary window frame; Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation, partly broken away, of the parts at one edge of the screen shownin Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a still further enlarged section on the line 33, Fig. 2; Fig. 1- is a detail perspective view of oneof the spring controlled levers.
10 denotes a window frame of any ordinary or usual construction within the upright side members of which are secured guides 11 for the screen. Said guides, as herein shown, comprise substantially smooth, straight bars, preferably circular in cross section, extend substantially from the top to the bottom of the opening in the frame 10, and are secured to the side mem bers of said frame by straps or strips of sheet metal 12 which are wrapped completely about the bars or guides 11 at suitable intervals and are secured to said side members, as by tacks.
The screen comprises a frame to which is secured the. usual netting 13 by any usual or well-known means, said frame being composed of side uprights 14L and top and bottom members 15 and 16, respectively, connecting said uprights. As herein shown one of the uprights 1 1-, namely that at the right in Fig. 1, is formed with a longitudinally extending groove to engage or receive one of the guides 11.

side portions 18 (see Fig. 8) which embrace the upright 1 1 at the opposite edge of the frame and are movably mounted at their ends in guide brackets 19 secured at the upper and lower corners of the frame, thereby permitting the auxiliary bar 17 to move laterally inwardly and outwardly with respect to the frame and vary the efllective width thereof. Between the side portions 18 the sheet metal bar 17 is formed with a longitudinally extending corrugation or fold 20 providing a groove to engage or receive the adjacent 'uide bar 11. In order to limit the outward movement of the bar 17 with re spect to the screen frame the side portions 18 thereof are provided with steps 21 which engage the inner sides of the guides 19, said stops being preferably formed by bending over the corners of said side portions, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2.
For yieldinglv pressing the auxiliary bar 17 outwardly there are provided levers 22 which are located in a longitudinally extending groove 23 formed in the edge of the adjacent member 1%, said levers being pivoted in said groove on pins 24 extending across from side to side of said groove. Said levers 22 are preferably composed of strips of sheet metal bent into U-shape in cross-section, shown most clearly in Fig. 1, the opposite sides thereof being formed with openings 25 to receive the pins 241:. The outer ends of the levers 22 engage the inner face of the bar 17 and, by reason of the cross-sectional shape of said levers, are recessed and sub stantially fit the inner surface of the fold 20. In order to provide for a more extended bearing the outer ends of said levers are preferably formed with inturned lips 20 also shaped to fit the inner surface of said fold. 27 denotes pull springs located in recesses 28 in the ends of the top and bottom members 15 and 16 adjacent the bar 17 and covered by removable plates 32, said springs being secured at their outer ends to the inner ends of the levers 22 and at their inner ends to the members 15 and 16 i 'es )ectivel v. The attachment of the springs 27 to the levers 22 may be effected by passing the ends of said springs through openings 29 in said levers and forming said ends with heads 80 engaging the outer sides of said levers, while the inner ends of said springs may be secured to the top and bottom members of the screen frame by means of pins or tacks 31.
It will be seen that the springs 27, acting through the levers 22 upon the auxiliary bar 17, will tend to force said bar outwardly with respect to the frame to the extent permitted by the engagement of the stops 21 with the guides 19 or by the width of the window frame 10, thereby permitting the screen to adapt or adjust itself in width to the width of said window frame. The yielding side member further permits guides 11 of the full length of the window frame to be employed, the screen being inserted in place by forcing the auxiliary bar 17 inwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, permitting the screen to be placed in position between the guides 11, after which the springs 27 will move said bar outwardly into the position shown in full lines in said figure, thereby retaining the screen in place.
The herein described construction and arrangement of the several cooperating parts produces a very simple and inexpensive screen of the character referred to and one which has been found to be extremely eflicient and satisfactory in operation. By reason of the form and arrangement of the sheet metal bar 17 and of the groove and recesses 28, all moving parts are completely housed, although the springs 27 are readily accessible if necessary for purposes of repair by removing the cover plates 32, the force of these springs being efficiently transmitted through the levers 22, which are so constructed as to cooperate conveniently with the sheet metal auxiliary bar 17. While only one adjusting bar 17 is shown at one edge of the screen it will be obvious that, if desired, a similar bar with its cooperating parts might be provided at the opposite edge.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A window screen comprising a frame, an auxiliary bar mounted on the edge of said frame and laterally movable thereon, levers pivoted to said frame and engaging at their outer ends said auxiliary bar, and pull springs connecting the inner ends of said levers with said frame.
2. A window screen comprising a frame, an auxiliary sheet metal bar having side portions embracing the edge of said frame and laterally movable thereon, said bar being formed between said side portions with a longitudinally extending fold providing a guide engaging groove, levers pivoted to said frame and having recessed outer ends arranged to engage and fit the inner surface of the fold in said auxiliary bar, and pull springs connecting the inner ends of said levers with said frame.
3. A window screen comprising a frame, an auxiliary sheet metal bar having side portions embracing the edge of said frame and laterally movable thereon, said bar being formed between said side portions with a longitudinally extending fold providing a guide engaging groove, levers pivoted to said frame and having recessed outer ends and inturned lips arranged to engage and fit the inner surface of the fold in said auxiliary bar, and pull springs connecting the inner ends of said levers with said frame.
4E. A window screen comprising a frame, an auxiliary sheet metal bar having side portions embracing the edge of said frame and laterally movable thereon, said bar being formed between said side portions with a longitudinally extending fold providing a guide engaging groove, U-shaped levers pivoted to said frame and having outer ends arranged to engage and fit the inner surface of the fold in said auxiliary bar, and pull springs connecting the inner ends of said levers with said frame.
In a window screen the combination with a frame comprising uprights and top and bottom members connecting said uprights, one of said uprights having in its edge a longitudinally extending groove and said top and bottom members having recesses in their ends adjacent said last named upright, of an auxiliary bar having side portions embracing said last named upright and laterally movable thereon, levers pivoted to said last named upright within said groove and engaging at their outer ends said auxiliary bar, and pull springs in said recesses and secured at their outer ends to the inner ends of said levers and at their inner ends to said top and bottom members respectively.
