a vertical, longitudinal section through nnirnn stares CHARLES VIVIAN WEATHERS, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
SHOCK-ABSORBING SPRING FOR GUN-STOCKS To all [ll/(.07)? it may concern I Be itknown that l, CHARLES Vivian 'Icivrnnns, a citizen of the United States residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shock-Absorbing Springs for Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to be attached upon the heel end of a gun stock for the purpose of taking up the shock resulting from the firing of a heavily loaded gun, thus preventing bruising of the shoulder of the user, and many other accidents which often occur when a gun is over loaded The primary object of my invention is to provide a generally improved shocl; ahsorhing spring of the class described, which will he exceedingly simple in construction. cheap of manufacture, eiiicient. in use, and much hotter adapted to its intended pur poses than any other device of the same Another object of my invention is to vigle a shock absorbing spring for a gun stool; that will be easy of adjustment and efficient in operation and one that ran be fastened to the stock oi a gun without mutilating the. same. i
With the above mentioned ends in view. lny invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the (ii-a rings. forming a part of this specification, Fix ure 1 is a side elevation of my shock ahr-zorbing spriuo' for gun stock attached to said gun stock. l
pro-
the shock absorbing spring: attached to a gun stock, parts being broken away. his. 3 is a perspective view of my shock a osorhing spring for gun stock.
Similar numerals oi reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings. the numeral l 1 designates a gun stock. 2 is a shock alisorbing spring having an inner and an outer plate. and is attached to the gun stock l by l Specification of Letters Patent.

screws-shown at :3 which pass th ough the inner plate ot spring 2 and hold the inner plate snugly against the end otthe gun stock 1 leaving the outer portionoi said spring resilient. blaid outer portion has a guide bar 4 passing into a slot 5 cut through the upper portion of inner plate of spring 2. and extending a distance therethrough. This guide it is for the purpose of guiding theupper portion of the resilient part of spring plate .2 in a direct line when the spring thereof receives the shock. Near the lower end of said plate 2 is a hole 5 bored through said resilient plate for the purpose of inserting therethrough screw 3 which assists in fastening inner plate of spring to gun stock 1. Said shoek absorbing spring 3 is made of steel or any other suitable spring metal of the proper thickness and width, bent and formed in shape as shown in the drawings, having an inner and an outer member.
Said inner member is fastened to a gun stock as shown at 23, leaving said outer memher resilient. which breaks the recoil of the gun and diminishes the force of the recoil when heavier charges are used, and lispenses with the annoyance caused by the recoilin e: and gives a better aim and greater force to the gun with the same charge as W161} the ordinary plate is used therewith.
From the foregoing descriptioin taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Haring thus described my invention, what claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- L in inmrm'einent in a shock ahsorhir inn for gun stocks the combiuut ;n oi an inner and r n outer plate and means for tas teningr the same to a e'un stocln said outer po ion of said spring being; resiiicnt and having; a guide bar adapted to pass through a slot out through the upper portion of the inner plate of said spring and extending a resilient partof sprin Z BiE'ST KVE TFEE FTW distance theretlnrough. substantially as and spring for gun stocks made of steel or any other suitable spring metal of the required wid sh and thickness bent and formed in the In testimony whereof I have affixed. my shape substantmlly as snown m the draw- I slgnature, 1n the presence of two subscnb' mgs, sand sprmg havmg an Annexand an' mg wltnesse's outer member, said inner member being CHARLES VIVIAN WEATHERS. 5 fastened to a gun stock, sale outer member Witnesses: I
hang reslhent, substantlafiy 1n the manner JOHN A. NAISMITH,
and for the purpose set fogth. J. B. CAMBERS.
