WILLIS E. SMITH, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
STEAM-ENGINE VALVE-GEAR.
inserts.
Application filed November 15, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, l ViLLis H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Steam-Engine Valve-Gears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the steam engine valve-gear disclosed in the U. S. Patent No. 1,033,532, dated July 23, 1912, and the object of the present invention is to simplify said gear and to reduce the number of parts, thus cheapening the structure to a considerable extent.
The patent referred to discloses a slide block and a guide therefor, which parts have been eliminated in the present construction.
in order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gear, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a drive wheel having a main crank (5 to which the pitman 7 is connected. To the crank 6 is connected an auxiliary crank 8. it may be here stated, that the gear is designed primarily for locomotives, although it is not limited thereto. For en gines other than locomotive engines, the crank G will be on a crank disk fast on the drive shaft. To the crank 8 is connected one end of a pitman 9, the other end of which latter is connected by a link 10 to a rocker arm 11 fast on a transverse shaft 12. The shaft 12 also has a rocker arm 13 set at substantially a right angle to the arm 11. The valve rod 1 1 is connected to the arm 13. The arms 11 and 13 constitute a bellcrank lever which transmits motion to the valve rod from the link 10 and the pitman 9. The shaft 12 is mounted in suitable bearings 15 carried by the frame of the locomotive, and the parts mounted on said shaft, as well as the associate parts hereinbefore Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 141,1.9191.
Serial No. 801,199.
described are, of course, duplicated on the opposite side of the locomotive, except when the gear is applied to a stationary or other engine having only one cylinder.
The foregoing parts are all arranged and they operate in the same manner as in the Patent Number 1,033,532 hereinbefore referred to.
In bearings 16 on a suitable support 17 carried by the frame of the locomotive is mounted a transverse shaft 18 having two rocker arms 19 and 20, respectively arranged at an angle to each other. To the support is also pivoted, as indicated at 21, an arm 22. The arms 20 and 22 are parallel and connected by a link 23, so that they may swing together.
To the pitman 9, intermediate the ends thereof, as indicated at 30, is pivotally connected one end of a link 31, the other end of which latter is pivotally connected to the link 23, as indicated at 32. The link 31 corresponds to the link which is shown in the Patent Number 1,033,532 connected to a slide block. This slide block and the guide therefor are eliminated in the present construction, the parts 20, 22 and 23 being substituted therefor. The arm 19 is connected by a. rod 33 to a reversing lever 54: provided with the usual locking means. The parts 20, 22 and 23 are also duplicated on the other side of the locomotive.
hen the lever 34 is operated, the arms 20 and 22 swing in parallelism, which shifts the link 23, producing the same effect'on the link 31 as the slide block in the patent hereinbefore referred to.
The number of parts which make up the gear is reduced to a minimum and the structure is greatly simplified and cheapened, and it can be readily installed.
I claim 1. A steam-engine valve-gear comprising a pair of parallel swinging arms, a link connecting said arms, means for swinging the arms, an auxiliary crank, a rod connected to said crank, a link connection between the rod and the aforesaid'link, and a second link, and a second link connected to the 16 link connected to the rod and having an rod and having an operative connection With operative connection With the engine valve.
2. A steam-engine valve-gear comprising a rock shaft, an arm on said shaft, a pivoted arm, a link connecting said arms, means for operating the rock shaft an auxiliary crank, a rod connected to said crank, a link connection between the rod and the aforesaid the engine Valve.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
