ALEXANDER GWIZDAL'A, OF CALUMET, MICHIGAN.
CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914.
Application filed March 8, 1912. Serial No. 682,392.
To all whom if may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GWIZDALA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Calumet, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churns, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of churn, by means of which the cream will be driven crosswise within the churn instead of in a circular direction.
The invention further has for its object to provide an improved construction of churn, by means of which, instead of a rotary or circular motion being imparted to the cream, it will be agitated so as to move crosswise within the churn, and at different angles.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in an improved churn, and in details of construction thereof, all as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a plan view of the churn constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation, with the churn top in vertical section.
In carrying out the invention, the churn top 1 is formed of a square shape with round corners 2. The top of the churn is provided with a suitable cover 3 secured in any suitable manner to the churn top, and is here shown by means of lateral projections at, each having an open ended slot 5, in which is located a bolt 6, hinged at one end with a lug 7 on the churn top, and having on its upper end a Wing nut 8, in threaded engagement therewith.
The churn is provided with a number of dashers 9, each of said dashers being located adjacent to one of the round corners 2 of the churns Mounted upon the cover 3 is a support for the shafts of the dashers 9, and the gearing mechanism connected therewith, said support consisting of metallic cross bars 10, elevated above the cover 3 by means of the uprights 11. Rotatably mount- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ed in the cross bars 10 are the shafts 12 of the dashers 9, each of said shafts having a pinion 13, meshing with a central gear wheel 14, formed with an annular, toothed, gear portion 15, which meshes with the pinions l3, and with the beveled toothed portion 17. The gear wheel 14c is rotatably mounted by means of stub shafts 18, located in the central connection of the cross bars 10 and in the cover 3 respectively. Meshing with the gear wheel 14% is the large, vertical, driving, beveled gear wheel 19, having its shaft 20 rotatably supported in the upright bearings 21, mounted on the cover 3, and operated by means of the hand wheel 22, having a bandle 23.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that by means of the square shape of the churn top having the round corners 2, and the arrangement of the dashers adja cent to said corners, that when the dashers are operated by the gearing herein-before described, the cream in the churn body will be acted upon by the dashers so as to be directed toward the sides of the body, and striking against the same will be diverted and carried in different circular and angular directions into the curved corners of the body and the square sides thereof. By this means a thorough and effective agitation of the cream will be had, so as to rapidly and efficiently convert the same into butter.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A churn comprising a rectangular receptacle, a dasher mounted in each corner of said receptacle, said dashers each consisting of four plane equidistant vanes, and means for simultaneously rotating said dashers in the same direction, to throw the cream at right angles against plane walls having an gular corners.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER GVVIZDALA.
