eating therewith, and opening through the upper edge of the said sash for accommodating the cord 12 and its fastener for connecting it to the said sash. The cord 12 is trained over a guide pulley 13 mounted in the window casement in the ordinary wellknown manner, and said cord is connected to the weight and to the window sash in a manner presently described.
The fastener or attaching device for connecting one end of the cord to the side rail of the window sash 6 comprises a split sleeve 14 formed at its outer end with an L-shaped wing 15, the portion thereof at right angles to the sleeve being provided with opposed laterally extending spurs 16, while the portion parallel with the said sleeve 14 has cut therefrom an alining spur or point 17 the wing being designed to engage in the socket 10 and the spurs 16 and 17 to bite into the wall thereof for the retention of the attaching device and firm fastening thereof in position on the side rails of the same, the cord 12 being designed to lie within the groove 11 formed in the side rail of the said window sash.
The attaching device for connecting the cord 12 to the weights 9 comprises split sleeve- like members 18 and 19 respectively, the latter being secured to the end of the cord while the other member is secured thereto spaced from the member 19. The member 18 is formed with a divergent Be it known that we, James E. BENNETT and Josnrn: F. Bnnxnrr, United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Imrove ments in Sash-Cord Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. The invention relates to sash cord fasteners.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a sash cord can be quickly and easily applied to a weight ordinarily used in window structures for the fastening of the weight thereto.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character which can be made as an article of manufacture or a staple product to be carried in stock, and which is designed for the fastening of a cord to a weight for use in window structures.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a combination device of this character which possesses simplicity, reliability and efficiency in its operation, and also one which may be manufactured at a minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through a window casement and sash showing the cord fasteners or attaching device constructed in accordance with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device for connecting the sash cord to a weight. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the same.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 5 designates a portion of a window casement, 6 the window sash which is slidably mounted as usual in a guide-way 7 formed in the said casement, the latter being also provided with a well or channel 8 in which works the weight 9 ordinarily employed for balancingthe window sash, while the vertical stile or side rail of the sash is formed with a socket- 10 and a groove 11 communi- To all whom it may concern:
citizens of the hole-shaped slot 21, and the member 19 is formed with a substantially T-sha-ped hook 22, the cross head is adapted to be passed through the slot 21 for the locking of the hook in the tongue or extension 20, the cord being passed through the eye formed in the weight 9 as usual prior to the engagement of the hook 22 in the tongue or extension20, and on the fastening of the said hook in the tongue or extension the cord will be looped for the hanging of the weight thereon as will be clearly apparent. On the removal of the sash from the window casement the weight- 9 can be detached from the cord in a quick and convenient manner, and also the said cord detached from the side rail of the window sash as will be apparent.
The sleeves 14c, 17 and 18 of the attaching device are secured to the cords by means 0 teeth 24 formed in the said sleeves and instruck indentations 25 which are also formed tongue extension 20 provided with a key-v 23 of which is offset and therein, the teeth and indentations being designed to bite into the cord for the permanent fastening of the sleeves thereon.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the 7 device will be clearly understood, and there- Uopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner JAMES E. BENNETT. JOSEPH F. BENNETT.
