Description

E. G. ARNOLD & A. 0. ATKIN. HAULAGE CLIP FOR ROPE HAULAGE RAILWAYS.
APPLICATION FILED JULYB, 1912.

EDWARD GEORGE ARNOLD, OF BEESTON, AND ALLEN OLIVER ATKIN, 0F LONG- EATON,
ENGLAND.
HAULAGE-CLIP FOR ROPE-HAULAGE RAILWAYS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD GEORGE AR- NOLD and ALLEN OLIVER ATKIN, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents, respectively, of Beeston, No-ttinghamshire, and Long Eaton, Derbyshire, both in England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Haulage-Clips for Rope-Haulage Railways.
This invention relates to improvements in haulage clips for rope haulage railways, and it is more particularly applicable to the clips which are employed to connect wagons to the haulage rope of railways for transporting coal or other minerals, in mines or other works.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1. is a side elevation of the open side of the clip. Fig. 2. a corresponding view of the reverse side, and Fig. 3. a vertical cross section, of a rope haulage clip constructed according to our invention. Fig. 4. is a side elevation showing the clip opened.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the upper movable jaw of our improved clip, the same being carried by a gripping member B mounted to slide vertically and to have an angular movement about a pivot C as hereinafter more fully described. The upper end of this gripping member B is provided with a hook D for attaching the clip to the wagon, and the pull of the latter on the hook, serves to turn the gripping member B about its pivot C. This movement is utilized to compress the movable jaw A down onto the haulage rope E, and grip it more securely.
The lower fixed jaw F of the clip, is situated on the lower end of the main part G, and the gripping member B is situated between the said main part G, and a front plate G secured thereto. The gripping member B is further provided with pivotal studs or pins C, which engage in vertical slots H provided for them in both the main part G and the front plate G The slots H form bearings for the pivotal pins C.
The lower end of the gripping'member B described, is as shown, provided with a cam surface B and the movable jaw A is connected to it by means of a pivoted joint A which is also slotted to allow of a certain amount of movement of the jaw A, and grip- Specification of Letters Patent.

ping member B, one relatively to the other. The movable jaw A is prevented from moving with the lower end of the gripping member B, by providing guide ribs J (see Fig. 1,) 0n the main part G of the clip, between which the aw A works.
When the gripping member B is moved about its pivot C, in consequence of the drag on the hook D at its upper end, the cam surface B on its lower end, acts on the movable jaw A, and forces it toward the fixed jaw F, thus increasing the grip on the rope firmer the aws A and F will grip the haulage rope. The same action takes place when the wagon over-runs the rope E in descending an incline, the gripping member B in this case being moved in the reverse direction.
The jaws A and F are opened and closed by means of a lever K, which is mounted on an axle N, secured to the upper end of the body G of the clip. The axle N is adjustable in a slot as shown, in order that it may be adjusted to compensate for wear. The leverK is provided with a short arm K (see Figs. 2, 3, and 4) which is connected by a link L to one of the fulcrum pins or studs C on the gripping member B, so that the latter can be readily moved toward or away from the fixed jaw by means of this lever K.
The gripping member B is held in position when the jaws are closed on the rope, by arranging the lever K K so that the arm K which is connected to the link L, is moved past the line of the centers as shown in Fig. 2, and is then held in this position by a fixed stop M.
The gripping action is only partially set controlling lever K, the subsequent action of the gripping member B, being relied upon to complete the operation. The clip is therefore readily applied and removed, and there are no parts which are likely to be set fast or become jammed.
What we claim as our invention and desire to cover by Letters Patent is 1. In a rope haulage clip, the combination of a main part, a fixed jaw thereon, a gripping member mounted on the main part so that it can be moved toward and away from the fixed jaw and also move angular-1y E, so that the greater the load 011 the clip, and consequent strain on the hook D, the
up when the jaws are closed by means of the in the plane of the haulage rope, an attachment hook on the upper end of the gripping member, a movable jaw at the lower end of the gripping member, cam faces on the latter to act on the movable jaw, and means for opening and closing the jaws, substantially as described.
2. In a rope haulage clip, the combination of a main part, a fixed jaw thereon, a gripping member mounted on the main part so that it can be moved toward and away from the fixed jaw and also move angular-1y in the plane of the haulage rope, an attachment hook on the upper end of the gripping member, cam faces on the latter to act on the movable jaw, and an operating lever connected by a link to the gripping member, for opening and closing the jaws, substantially as described.
3. In a rope haulage clip, the combination of a main part, a fixed jaw thereon, a gripping m ember mounted between the main part and a front plate secured thereto, pivotal pins on the gripping member engaging in slots in the main part and front plate, an attachment hook on the upper end of the gripping member, a movable aw on the lower end of the gripping member, cam faces on the latter to act on the movable jaw, an operating lever, and a link for connecting said lever to the gripping member so disposed that the points of connection are moved past the line of centers up to a fixed stop and the jaws thus locked when closed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
