Be it known that 1, JOHN FRANKLIN GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Camden, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Pen-Blank-Fc-rmingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple, rapidly operating and accurate machine for marking and forming the previously cut flat blanks from which pens are to be made; it being also desired that the machine shall be relatively efiicient and have its parts so arranged that they are not likely to get out of order or require repair.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above noted type with novel devices for preventing it from being started unless the pen blank-carrying members occupy the proper positions relatively to the punch carrying member or members.
The invention also contemplates novel means for actuating and locking the blank carrying member of the machine and likewise a novel arrangement of parts for placing and thereafter holding a pen blank prior to and during its marking, as well as novel means for specifically forming and discharging the finished pen blanks.
These objects and other advantageous ends I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

In the above drawings 1 represents the base or foundation of the machine on which is mounted a yoke or framework 2 providing bearings for a horizontal main shaft (not shown) on which is fixed a driving pulley 3 and a pair of cranks operating connecting rods et and 5. Through suitable gearing forming no part of the present invention, power is transmitted from the main shaft to a vertical shaft 7 which is carried in a bearing 8 supported at one side of the frame 2, and having fixed to it a crank 9 and cam 10.
The crank 9 is connected through a rod 11 with an oscillatory arm 12, jo-urnaled on a vertical spindle 13, mounted in a suitable manner at substantially the center of a stationary circular plate or diskl t, carried by the base 1. The arm 12 has attached to it a pawl 15 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and normally drawn by a spring 17 toward a ratchet plate 16 which is fixed to or formed as part of a rotary plate 18 mounted on the spindle 13 so as to be substantially concentric with the stationary plate 14:. The
rotary plate 14: has mounted on it a number of sets of blank holding members hereafter described in detail, there being in the present instance eight sets of said members spaced equidistant upon said plate, and for locking the latter in any one of its eight operative positions, it is provided with a number of peripheral locking recesses 19,
designed to cooperate with a locking bolt 20. forming part of or mounted on a slide 21- which is reciprocable in suitable guide ways at one side of the main frame. This slide is actuated by a horizontally placed member 22 having an elongated slot for the reception of the vertical shaft 7 and carrying a roller 23 placed to be engaged by the cam 10 on said shaft. The locking bolt 20 with its slide 21, member 22 and the roller 23is at all times drawn toward the rotary plate 18 by a spring 24: acting between a pin 25 on said member 22 and a projection 26 on the frame of the machine.
For controlling the operation of the machine I provide a pin controlled or other suitable clutch 27 of the form common in punches and like machines, and connect its governing pin 28 through a link 29 with a hand lever 30, mounted in the present .instance at that side of the frame 2 opposite the locking boltQO.
In order to prevent the starting of, themachine when the rotary plate 18 with its associated parts is in other positionstthan those in which the locking bolt 20 is in en gagement witha recess19, I provide a slid of-the-recesses 19-thus rigidly holding the rotary plate 18. At-any other time,'the bar 31 is-necessarily held outwardly by atooth ofthe ratchet wheel 16 against the action of thespring 32, so that the starting lever cannot be moved downwardly because the end of said bar is projected immediately beneathsaid lever Attached to the connecting rods 4 and 5 whiclreach form part of a toggle, are two other members 33 "and 34 to whose lower ends are connectedheads 35' and 36 free to slide verticallyjn' guide ways 37 on the frame 2 I The head 35 has fixed to its lowerenda presserfoot 38 and a punch portionis undercut as indicated at 39 in Fig. 5 for a-purposehereafter noted.
At-points mid waybetween the locking recesses 19 (Fig. 3), the periphery of the rotary plate 18 is provided with a relatively deep parallel sided' recess, on each side of which are two relatively elongated slots 40 and 41 in the first or outer pair ofwhich are mounted slides :43 carrying bolts 42 whose heads enter undercut portions of the rotary plate 18 which extendparallel with the slots 40 so that said 'slidesmay be moved toward and from the peripheryof said plate. On each of the slidesis mounted a blank engaging finger-44 provided with a longitudinal slot 45 extending in adirection substantially at right angles to the line of the slot 40'. The slides 43may be clamped in any adjusted position by the nuts onthe bolts 42,- and there are relatively large washers46 inter-.
posed between said nuts and the adjacent upper end of each slide, the arrangement being such that the fingers of each pair are movable on their slides 43toward and from each other. At all times said fingers are forced toward each other by springs 47 en gaging their rear ends and mounted on the bolts 42. Assho-wn in Fig. 4, the fingers 44 twhile hayingtheir body portions mount ed on the upper face of the rotary plate 18, have their, pen engaging ends extended downwardly so that their lower or under surfaces engage with or lie immediately adjacent to the top face of the stationary plate 14. Moreover, as shown in Fig. 4, the adjacent ends of these fingers are not only up -wardly and backwardly inclined from'said stationary plate but immediately adjacent thereto, are nicked or recessed at their extremities so as to be capable of receiving and holding the fiat pen blank X. Theflat portion 39 of the presser foot 38 has mounted in it a vertically movable pin 48 serving as an auxiliary or holding device which is at all times pressed downwardly by a suitably formed spring 49 attached to the main presser foo-t in any desired or suitable manner.
.5 -Lying substantially parallel with the fingers 44 is a second set of fingers 50 which llikewise are carried on theupper face of the rotary plate 18 and are longitudinally slotted as indicated at 51, for the reception of a slide 52 which in turn extends into .the slot 41 of said rotary plate. Bolts 53 serve to'connect the plate with the respectiveslides and their fingers, although in this case said bolts rigidly clamp the parts to said plate so thatafter being adjusted,they
are immovably held inplace, the bolts as before'having head portions in the enlarged lower portions of the slots 41. The adjacent gends of the fingers 50 are downwardly extended so that their under portions rest upon or are immediately adjacent the top surface of the stationary plate 14, and like fingers 44, have nicks or recesses for the reception of the rear end of a pen blank X, so that- .this'will be held in engagement with the said fixed plate. It is noted that the fingers 44 are preferably so spaced apart by means of set screws 55 placed in their outer ends to engage the slides 43, that the distance between them is normally less than the width of the presser foot, which=on being lowered, forces them apart against the action of the springs 47'. The upper adjacent edges or end portions of the fingers 50 are outwardly inclined or flared as shown in Fig. 5, though to a less extent than the fingers 44.

Fig. 1, the slidable head 35 of the press, in addition to the presser foot 38 carries a punch 59 so mounted that when said head descends it will engage a pen blank held by one setof fingers 44-5O at the same time that the presser foot engages andplaces the penblank held by a preceding set of fingers, it being, noted that under operating conditions the rotary. plate turns in the directionof the arrow indicated in Fig. 2. As
best shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the punch 59 is rigidly held in the head 35 by a set screw 55.
Immediately under the stationary plate 11 in the vertical line of movement of this punch 59 there is mounted a die supporting block 56 held to the base structure 1 by a dowel 57 which enters a suitably formed recess; there being a pin 58 extending transversely through the block 56 and the dowel so as to properly hold these parts together. The upper face of the die block is recessed for the reception of a marking die 61, which in this case is in the form of an elongated relatively narrow block having an upwardly projecting portion 62 whose top face has formed in it the letters or symbols, etc. which it is desired to impress on the pen blank. A plate 63 surrounds this upwardly projecting portion 62 of the die, which with said plate, has its top surface substantially flush with or slightly below the top face of the stationary plate 14, and said plate 63 is held to the die by screws 64 as shown in Fig. 7. Set-screws 65 serve to rigidly hold the die 61 to the block 56.
As indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 the stationary plate 1st is cut away to a suitable extent under the sliding punch head 36 and in this space is mounted a second die block 66 supported on the base 1, and positioned by a pin or dowel 67 to which it is locked by a transverse pin 68. The top face of this block is recessed for the reception of a die 69 which may be rigidly held in place by a wedge 7 O and in turn is locked in posit-ion by a set screw 71. Upon those parts of the block 66 on opposite sides of said die are two sets of relatively flat positioning fingers 66 and 66 projecting over the die so as to guide a fiat pen blank as it is forced down out of the fingers 4450. Each of these positioning fingers is longitudinally slotted for the reception of an adjusting screw 66 where by it may be rigidly held in a given position. The punch head 36 in this case carries a punch 60 in the shape of a narrow elongated plate whose lower end is made convex and is otherwise so formed as to match with the recess in the upper face of the die 69 in order to properly shape a pen blank to give it the well known upwardly convex form. This punch is held to the lower end of the sliding head 36 by a set-screw 73 which head also carries a pin or plunger 7 4 having a head 75 slidable in a cavity of the sliding head and normally pressed downwardly by a spring 76. The part of this plunger projecting outside of the head structure carries a stripper plate 77 designed to wipe one side of the punch 60 adjacent the lower end thereof.
As shown in Fig. 10, the die 69 does not entirely fill the recess provided for it in the top of the die block 66 so that there is a cavity into which projects a discharging finger 78, movable on a vertical pivot 79 in a recess in the die block 66 and pivotally connected by a screw 80 to a slidable plate 81. This latter is provided wit-h two slots, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 10, for the reception of a pair of screws 82 and is at all times pressed outwardly by a spring 83, one end of which is connected to it while the other is attached to the die block so that the outer end of said plate engages and co-acts with the toothed plate or ratchet 16. This discharging finger 78 is mounted in position to engage the rear of a finished pen blank so as to move it radially away from the central pivot 13 and there is provided a chute 85 for the reception of the blank when so discharged. I
\Vith the-above described arrangement of parts, power from a suitable source is applied to the pulley or fiy wheel 3 which turns idly on its shaft unless the lever 30 be so thrown as to operate; the clutch 27 through the link 29 and pin 28. Obviously, however, such operation of the lever cannot occur unless the locking bar 31 under the action of the spring 32, is projected inwardly toward the vertical spindle 13 to its maximum extent, under which conditions its inner end fits into the low-est part of any one of the teeth of the ratchet plate 16. Under these conditions the rotary plate 18 is in such position that one set of its fingers l50 is in such position that the presser foot- 38 can force its way between them, while at the same time the neXt succeeding set of fingers is properly placed to permit of the punch 59 engaging the pen blank held by them. At the same time, still another set of fingers lies immediately under the slidable punch head 36 so that the punch 60 may properly engage a pen blank held by them, and it may be noted that this latter blank necessarily liesat the point immediately adjacent the open end of the chute 85.
Immediately after the clutch 27 is thrown into act-ion, the crank operating the connecting rod 4: so actuates this and the toggle member 33 that the sliding head 35 is moved downwardly for a working stroke. The two cranks are so set that after the head 35 has moved down and started on an up stroke, the head 36, which acts behind it, completes its downward working stroke and also starts up. The revolution of the main shaft, through the gearing in the casing 6, likewise turns the shaft 7, and the parts are so arranged and set that after the head 36 has moved up far enough to permit its punch 60 to clear the fingers 4L450 and their associated parts, the cam 10 acts on the roller 23 to move the part 22 with the slide 21 and the locking tooth 20, away from the rotary plate 18, thus releasing this latter. Immediately thereafter, the rotation of the crank disk 9 by the shaft '7 causes the arm 12 to be swung on its pivot through the rod 11, thus moving forward the pawl 15 and carrying'with it the ratchet plate 16 togetherwith the rotary plate 18 and their associated parts. "In Fig. 2 said plates and cranks are shown in the positions occupied after the'arm vwith the ratchet platehas been moved forwardlyto a distance which is equal to the distance between the two sets of fingers 4450 and just prior to the swinging back of said arm with" its pawl preparatory to another strokev Immediately after the rotary plate 18 has been brought to rest, the roller 23 falls off of the high part of the cam 10 and bythe action of the spring 24 the locking tooth 20 ,is entered in that one of the notches19 of said rotary plate which lies immediately adjacent it so that the plate is rigidly held from movement until it is again released by the withdrawal of this'locking-tooth.
From the above description it will be seen that therotary plate 18 with its various fingers is turned through. an angle equal to the angulardistance betweeirtwo sets wardly or toward the central spindle 13v until its rear end is engaged and stopped by the fingers 50. Thereafter the intermittent movement of the plate 18 carries this set of fingers with the blank until it passes under the presser foot 38, which when the head 35 makes its next working stroke, forces apart the fingers 44c and presses the flat blank down upon the upper face of the stationary plate 14: so that said'fingers' 44 are free to come together for a limited distance until the blank is entered in their notches or recesses, this action occurring as the part 39 of said presser foot is raised and while the blank is held down by the spring pressed pin 48 which extends below the lower face of the presser foot. The blank is thus firmly held by the two sets of fingers 4 1 and 50, so that it lies in contact with or immediately adjacent the top face of the stationary plate 14, and at the next movement of the rotary plate 18 is carried under the punch 59 into the position shown in Figs. 6 and 7. hen said punch next descends,it engages the pen blank and with the co-action of the die 61, impresses there on the manufacturers name or any other desired matter. On the next movement of the plate 18, the pen blank is carried into a position immediatelyover the die 69, although it' is held by the fingers 4i450 slightly above the same, andupon the descent of the punch 60,,it'is forced out of said fingers, between. ,the positioning fingers 66 and 66. ,andinto the cavity of the die 7 i 69, in which it is givemthe desired shape;

under the action of thespring- 76, remains stationary relatively to said punch which at engages. 7 Immediately thereafter, the irotary, movement of the ratchet, plate 16 removes the high part of one of the teeth thereof from ,under the .plate 81 and as a consequence, this latter under the action of the spring 83, suddenly moves inwardly,
causing the projecting end of the discharging finger ,78 to violently strike the rear end of the vfinished blank, and force it into the chute85. V r
I i It will be understood that each time the movement of the plate18 ceases, a pen blank is put into position between a set of a the fingers 4450 which is temporarily at the front of the machine, so that three blanks are operated on by the presser foot and thetwo punches whenever the heads 35 and 36 make a working stroke. At anytime the machine may be stopped by anupward movement of the lever 30 and the rotary plate may thereafter be turnedforward by hand so as to adjust any of the parts, or for any other purposes, though it is necessary in each instance that said plate shall be locked in one of its predetermined positionswith the tooth 20 in one of its recesses 19 before the slid able bar 31 can move under the action of the spring 32 into such posit-ion as to allow operation of the lever 30 with the consequent starting of the machine.
The positioning guiding fingers 66* and 66 perform a very necessary function in insuring the proper entry of a pen blank into the die even though the fingers on the rotary plate may hold it slightly to one side or the other instead of directly above, saidv die. Moreover, these fixed guiding fingers which it will be noted "have their adjacent portions beveled, prevent the tilting of the pen blank prior to its entrance into the die so that the blanksare without exception so forced into the die that they are acted upon and shaped in the desired manner.
I claim- 1. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a rotatable plate; a plurality of sets of blank-holding fingers mounted on the plate and means for rotating the plate tobring the blanks carried by the sets of fingers successively between the punch and the die;
with a device for successively discharging the blanks in a direction radial of said plate after they have been acted on by the punch and die.
2. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a marking punch; a die therefor; a forming punch; a die for said latter punch; means for actuating the punches; a rotatable plate; a plurality of sets of pen-blank holding fingers mounted on the plate; and means for intermittently moving the plate to bring the blanks carried by said sets of fingers successively between the punches and their respective dies.
3. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a rotatable plate; a plurality of sets of pen-blank holding fingers mounted on the plate; certain of the fingers of each set being movable, and the others being fixed; with means for rotating the plate to bring the blanks carried by the fingers successively between the punch and the die.

The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a member movablein a plane substantially at right angles to the line of movement of the punch; blank holding means on said member consisting of a pair of fingers movable toward ancl from each other; and blank limiting means consisting of a second pair of relatively fixed fingers; with means for moving said member between the punch and the die.
5. Thecombination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a stationary plate; a second plate movable adjacent thereto; blank holding fingers mounted on said second plate and having means for carrying a blank immediately adj acent the stationary plate; with means for moving the second plate over the first plate to bring a blank carried by said first means between the punch and the die.
6. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a stationary plate; a plate movable over said stationary plate between the punch and die; two fingers guided on the movable plate so as to be adjustable toward and from each other; with a device for causing a pen blank to be gripped by said fingers; and a device for automatically discharging the blank after it has been acted on by the punch and die.
7. The combination in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a rotatable plate; a fixed plate adjacent the same; a plurality of blank holding fingers mounted on the rotary plate; means for causing a blank to be engaged by the fingers; and means for turning the plate to cause a blank to be brought between the punch and the die after having been engaged by the fingers.
8. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a
die; a fixed supporting structure; a plate rotatable adjacent thereto and provided with substantially radial slots; a set of fingers projecting into each slot and formed to hold a pen blank immediately adjacent the stationary plate; with means for intermittently moving the rotary plate to bring the blanks held by the'ditferent sets of fingers successively between the punch and the die.
9. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of pen carrying means, including a movable member; a plurality of sets of fingers mounted on said member, of which certain are fixed and the others are movable; with means for marking and subsequently forming a blank carried by said fingers.
10. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a radially slotted plate; a supporting structure under said plate; two sets of longitudinally slotted fingers projecting into each of the slots of said plate; means for intermittently rotating the plate; means for mechanically placing a blank in the grip of the fingers of each set; and means for thereafter forming said blank.
11. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a rotary plate; a plurality of sets of blank-holding fingers mounted thereon; a die; a plurality of reciprocating heads; a presser foot carried by one of said heads for causing a blank to be gripped by the fingers of each set; a-punch carried by the other head for co-acting with the die to form a blank; and means for rotating the plate to cause the blanks to be successively presented to the presser foot and to the punch.
12. The combination, in a pen-blank forming machine, of a rotary plate; a plurality of sets of fingers mounted thereon; two dies; two reciprocating punch heads carrying punches cooperating with said dies;- a presser foot also carried by one of the punch heads in posit-ion to cause a blank-to be gripped by a set of fingers; and means for intermittently turning the plate to cause the sets of fingers with their blanks to be successively presented to the presser foot and to the two sets of punches and dies.
13. The combination, in a pen blank forming machine, of a reciprocating punch; a die; a rotatable plate; a set of pen blank holding fingers mounted on the plate; means for rotating the plate to bring the fingers between the punch and the die; and a device for automatically discharging the blank after it has been acted on by the die and punch. v 1 V 14:. The combination in a pen-blank forming machine, of a rotatable plate; a plurality of sets of pen-blank holding fingers mounted thereon; a die mounted under the plate; a set of upwardly beveled relatively fixed guiding fingers also mounted under the plate above the die; means for intermittently rotating the plate to bring the blanks carried by its fingers successively over the die; and a punch operative to force .each blank out of the plate fingers through the fixed fingers into the die. 7
