Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914i.
Application filed November 27, 1912. Serial No. 733,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J0snPH ,OHAnLToN PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Oklahoma, in the county 0i" Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to the class of puzzles and more preferably to a device of this lliltlllg. which a so serves as a calcnlating device.
My invention as apparent with the hereinafter appearir, disclosure, will prove very instructive as it will be amusing to either older or younger people and it is thought that the same, being constructed of only a few simple parts can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
My invention, while termed a puzzle, has
means provided therein which have to be moved into certain places, but after these means have been moved into position, they will form the different numerical tables, for instance, two table, three table, four table, etc. It takes a great deal of skill and is very amusing when trying to -move the different means into place, but after they have l tl. device can be used for teaching children arithmetic and may be also termed as an educational product.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, relerence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. is. 2 is a sectional view taken. upon line 8 is a perspective view -or my invention in sec showing the 1.
tion, and Fig. at is a perspective view of one of the operating blocks.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the body portion of the devicdwhich is in the form of an elongated plate being curved at its rear end as shownat 3:1 for the purpose that will be hereinaftenset' forth. 1 Side pieces 12 he apparent that the spacii' and an end piece 13 areprovided, the end piece engaging one of the extremities of the side pieces and each piece having an inwardlyextending flange 14; provided thereon as is shown. A central strip 15 is provided in the device which has a pair of flanges 16 projecting from opposite sides thereof, these flanges being in alinement with the flanges formed np r the side pieces 12. Ihe central strip ext ds to and engages the end piece 13 ever, it is re duced in length with r pest to the side pieces. Another cad e 17- is provided and pivoted upon on v *e'side pieces as shown 18, it also l t a flange 19 provided thereon, the la ng spaced from the body portion tin no distance as the rest of the flanges so hat all are disposed in the same horizontal plane." as designated. by the numeral 19 is provided and pivoted upon one of the side pieces as shown 20 engaging screw 21 carried upon the end piece at certain times for holding the same in position.
A plurality of operating members such as shown in Fig. 4- are provided which consists of upper and lower blocks 22, being spaced apart through the medium of the sections :23. The outer faces of the blocks are provided with suitable numerals such. as shown in all the views so that when placed in suitable positions upon the hoard, they will engage diflerent numerical tab" Upon reference to the rags, it will oi: comparatively less diameter than the blocks so that they may slip between the gauges 14 and 16 or ldand 16 very easily. By this arrangement it is apparent that blocks can he moved within the device a on occasion requires, however, they can not be removed therefrom unless the pivoted end is removed. I
In the operation at blocks are disposed the 86th one out. e nd member I closed and the blocks are moved to ass suitable sitions to form a suitable numer my invention, 35 the device 7.. cal tahl'f By leaving one of the hloelts out, this alloys the rest to be moved within the device so that they may be disposed in place. After all the rest of the blocks have been moved into position, the 38th blockoan be disposed in place Wlll he formed.
Numbers of difierent denomination are and as is apparent a table A catch such 3 section is provided upon the reverse side of the operating blocks so that they may be turned over and other tables formed at the will of the operator.
From the foregoin it is thought that the advantages and nove features of my invention will be readily comprehended.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided, however, such changes fall Within the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, a puzzle comprising a body portion, side pieces disposed u on said body portion, an end piece carrie by said body portion, flanges projecting inwardly from said side roeaeea pieces and said end piece, a central strip disposed in said body portion and having flanges formed upon the vertical sides thereof, an end piece pivoted upon one of said side pieces, means for securing said lastmentioned end piece in place, a flange formed upon said last mentioned end piece and in alinement with said first mentioned flanges, members slidable between said side pieces and said central strip, said members comprising blocks, means including a specing section for holding said blocks out of en.- gagement with each other, said. spacing section being of less diameter than said blocks thereby allowing the latter to move between said flanges as and for the purpose set forth and described.
