Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 9, 1912. Serial No. 682,684.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS BRESNA HAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to pumps and particularly to pumps of the double acting type.
The invention consists in the provision of a double acting pump which is so constructed as to produce a continuous and substantially constant discharge, in the provision of a simple, proficient and compact device, and further to provide a casing containing the cylinder and the valve chambers, all of which may be cast as an integral structure.
The invention resides in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of parts as more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a pump embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on line of Fig. 1.
A designates the casing herein shown as of rectangular form, B the pump cylinder and C the piston which is of the double acting type.
D is the supply chamber formed between the bottom E of the casing and the horizontal partition F and spaced therefrom, the chamber extending completely across the casing. G is a second horizontal partition spaced from the top H to provide an outlet chamber I.
J and K designate the supply and discharge connections communicating respectively with the chambers D and I.
The pump cylinder is preferably formed in a rectangular projection L extending laterally from one of the side walls and which has the top and bottom thereof spaced from the horizontal partition. Arranged centrally of the case is a vertical wall M providing the compartment between the horizontal partitions into complementary noncommunicating portions, while project-ing laterally from the projection L is an inter- .mediate partition N which extends upon opposite sides of the dividing wall M, thereby providing inlet and discharge receiving chambers O, O and P, P, each of which has an enlarged portion at one side of the proeotlon.

valve openings Q, Q, Q and Q that are controlled by upwardly opening valves R, R, R and 1%, these valves cont-rolling communication between the inlet and supply I chambers and between the discharge receiving and the outlet chambers. As shown, while the projection L has the ends thereof connected to the ends of the casing the ends of the cylinder terminate at a distance from the ends of the lateral projection, and the port-ions of the latter beyond the cylinder ends have openings U, U at the top and bottom thereof, and lateral openings V, V arranged respectively upon opposite sides of the partition. This arrangement provides a support for the ends of the projection in which the cylinder is formed. The casing cylinder and various partitions with the exception of the top and bottom of the casing, are preferably formed as an integral casting.
While my improved pump is adapted for other uses, it is especially designed to be employed for fire engines where it is required to pump large quantities of water to supply a continuous stream. Describing the operation of the pump as so e1nployedassuming that the supply connection J leads to the hydrant, water enters the chamber D and is drawn upon movement of the piston in one direction, into the compartment 0, and through the openings U, V into the cylinder. Upon the reverse movement of the piston the water is forced through the ports U, V into the compartment 0 and then to the outlet chamber, the water discharging from the connection K. The operation in the other compartment of the pump is the same as just described except in the reverse order. That is, while the portion of the pump upon one side of the dividing wall is being supplied with water, the complementary portion simultaneously forcing water into the outlet chamber.
From the arrangement of parts before described, it will be apparent that in the working of the pump liquid is continuously supplied to the outlet chamber and that a supply chamber is provided from which the more, the auxiliary supply chamber has an enlarged portion which will normally contain a considerable quantity of liquid. This not only insures a priming of the pump so to speak, upon the initial movement of the piston, but a steady and voluminous stream is procured.
In order to prevent binding of the piston I preferably provide the latter with a guide rod X which extends out through a packing box Y at one end of the casing. The piston rod Z projects out through the opposite end of the casing and any suitable power is applied to this red for reciprocating the same.
IVhat I claim as my invention is:
In a double acting pump, the combination with a casing including the ends, of a member extending longitudinally of the casing and having the ends thereof integral with the ends of the casing, said member having a pump cylinder therein of lesser length than said member, the ends of the latter beyond the cylinder being provided with a plurality of openings leading to the cylinder, horizontal partitions upon opposite sides of the cylinder and spaced therefrom, each of said partitions having two series of valve openings therein, valves controlling said openings, a wall extending between said partitions positioned intermediate the series of valve openings and dividing the casing into complementary, 11on-communicating portions, and a partition projecting laterally from one side of the cylinder formed integral. therewith, extending upon opposite sides of the dividing wall and connected to the casing and to the dividing Wall, and heads for said casing spaced from said horizontal partitions.
