EDGE-TURNING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I Moran Aaaaarown'z, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Turning Attachments for Sewin -i\fachines; and I do hereby declare that t 10 following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and im iroved device for turning in the stitched edges of the layers of material used in making 11 a. garment whereby the right side of the olded over edges may be sewn by the machine without the necessity of first basting down such edges.
The principal object of the invention is to provide guides for folding over the stitched layers upon themselves and directing the so formed folded edges to the machine needle and a device for retaining such edges in their proper folded position in the approach to the needle.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accom anying drawings forming a part of this s )(bClfiCillZlOIl, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein:

a point adjacent to and at one side of the needle, outwardly therefrom a suitable distance, being held in such )osition by an extension i at one side which is pivoted as at: 15 to a slotted plate j secured upon the table 0 by a thumb screw 16, the slot extending at right angles to the abutment (5 so as to permit of a sidewise adjustment of the latter relatively to the needle to vary the distance of the stitching from the folded ed e of the garment. At the op )osite side of tile abutment, that is at the su e exposed to the needle, the guide plate a is presented being at right angles to the abutment and extending from the outer end of the latter inwardly and downwardly to a point a suitable distance from the needle and above the table 0, the outer edge of the plate being longitudinally tapered from the outer end thereof to its inner end where it merges into the vertical surface of the abutment. 'lhe pivot 15 permits the abutment to be swung out of its normal position when desired.
The holding device 7' is suitably supported adjacent to the inner end of the guide plate and a sufficient distance above the table 0 to allow the fabric to pass beneath and is formed with a forked end at such point by means of which the fold of the mm is formed, as will he presently described.
In order to form the forked end of the member f and at the same time facilitate the passage of the folded fabric between it and the abutment I have utilized a flanged roller, the inner end of the plate. a being centrally located with relation to the flanges k of the roller so that when the folded edge of the garment is moved inwardly along the guide 0 (being directed toward the needle by the abutment) the stitched edge 12 will assume a position between the flanges 7.: with the main portions 1' and a over and under the roller. To further facilitate the accurate engagement of the edge of the garment with the roller I have provided the guide 7 which is located in front. of: the roller and comprises a member presenting a month Z with flared lips m hicated one above and one below the guide c. The mouth extends from the outer end of the member 1 inwardly toward the. abutment: to a point adjacent to the roller, the space be.- tween the rear wall of the mouth and the abutment gradually decreasing from the outer to the inner end of the former, thus by such means easily engaged with the roller.
As seen by the'drawingsl prefer to 's ace the roller and the inner end of the gui e 9 just a snfiicient distance from the abutment to permit a single thickness of fabric to pass between, $0, to provide for different thickness I have mat e these members adjustable relatively to the abutment and as this adjustment is carried out the same way in both cases I will only describe it in connection with the roller.
The roller is rotatably supported by the member f which is carried by a shank 0 held in a suitably supported carrier p. Between the carrier and the shank there is a frictional connection formed by means of a member bin ed to the cut-away end u of the shunt ami o siring e located between the member q an the cut-away portion. When the shank o is in its normal position shown by the drawings any end thrust to which it may be subjected is taken up by an interior stop w presented by the carrier 1).
To adjust the position of the roller relatively to the abutment for the purpose above pointed out, the member 9 is pressed against the influence of the spring 1) thus permitting the shank to be moved longitudinally toward the abutment, movement away from the abutment being permitted to a limited extent by pressing the hinged member q down so that the corner p thereof will pass beneath the sto w.

As the folded edge of the garment passes from the roller to the needle it is held in proper position and the folds are brought into close contact with each other in readinose to be sewn, through the medium of the to) cover plate h which extends over the re lcr and guide 9, in close relation to the abutment (l and is inclined from the roller downwardly toward the needle so that the edge is radually pressed into tight folded position )cfore being sewn. The cover plate is carried by the presser foot 10 by means of a vertical extension 17 and a set screw 18 while a slot 10 permits of a longitudinal adjustment to maintain its position relatively to the abutment when the latter is adjaslcd.
Operation: When a garment is to be hemmed the edges are first sewn, and heretofore the top and bottom portions r and a were basted in their folded positions before being again sewed, but in the present invention the garment, after the first line of stitching as been sewn, is, without being basted, directly applied to the attachment with the plate a between the portions 1* and s which are res )ectively turned over and under the stitche portion 12. {is the folded edge is fed toward the needle and the guide 9 is reached the stitched portion 12 enters the mouth l while the portions 1' and 8 pass over and under the lips m and in this position it is directed by the inwardly extending mouth I and tapered )lnte e to the roller, engaging thercwiti and iavin the portion 12 between the flanges lo and tie portions r and s respectively between the cover It and top of the roller and between the table 0 and bottom of the roller. The folded edge is then guided between the table 0 and downwardly inclined cover plate It to the needle where it is sewn as at 14 thus completing the hem.
I claim:
1. In a sewing machine attachment for folding the edges of a fabric, the combina tion with a necdlc,of an abutment mounted upon the sewing machine independent of the presser foot, a guide plate mounted edgewise at an an 1e upon the abutment, tapered toward the utter and terminating at a point spaced from the needle and a member ocated adjacent to the tapered edge of the guide plate and at the outer side thereof with relation to the abutment and adapted g to hold the fabric against the guide plate.
2. The combination with a sewing machine and its needle, of an attachment for folding the edges of a fabric, including an upright abutment having mounted thereon an angularly disposed guide plate tapered toward the abutment and terminating at a point spaced from the needle, a forked device locatcd adjacent to the termination of: the guide plate such device holding the fabric against the abutment, and a cover plate located above the holding device and oxtendin r downwardly therefrom to a point at the Bit 0 of the neet le.
3. The combination with a sewing machine, its needle and the table portion thereof, of an attachment for folding the edges of a fabric, including a vertical abutment. secured to the table with its inner end adjacent to the needle, a downwardly inclined guide plate mounted on the abutment at right angles thereto and lougitiulinally ta- )ered toward the. said abuhnrnt, terminating at a. point spaced from the needle, a suitably supporter flanged roller located adjacent to the termination of the guide plalo, such roller holding the fabric against the abutment, a suitably supported guide situated in front of the roller and presenting a mouth partially inclosing the said guide plate, and a cover plate extending from the neegle upwardly over the said roller and gm e.
4. The combination with a sewing machine, its needle and the table portion thereof, of an attachment for foldin the edges of a fabric, including a vertical a utment secured to thetable'with its inner end adjacent to the needle, 0. downwardly inclined guide plate mounted on the abutment at right. angles thereto and longitudinally tapered toward the said abutment, terminating at a point siaced from the needle, a carrier, a shank having at one end a frictional connection with the carrier, a flanged roller supported at the opposite end of the shank at a point adjacent to the termination of the guide plate, such roller holdin the fabric against the abutment, a second shank situated in front of the first men- MOTEL ABRAMOWITZ.
