To all whom it may concern:
Be; it known that- I, HEINRICH DnenNnR, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 26 Hollmannstrasse, Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Casting and Controlling Mechanism ofT pe-Bar-Casting Machines, of which the ollowing is a speclfication. a
The present invention consists in lmprovements in the casting and controlling mechanism of type bar" casting machines, and is particularly applicable to machines made and sold under the trade mark Linotype. The mold carrier of such a machine is a wheel loose on a fixed axis and rotatable in a vertical plane through its cycle of movement by a pinion drlven by the driving mechanism of the machine. A clutch is combined with the said mechanism which can be opened to stop the machine at the end of' each cycle. The molds on the carrier differ from each other in size but this invention concerns itself only with diiferences in body. They are arranged around the car-,

The invention comprises automatic means 7 by which a mold or the mold carrier or the adjustable mechanism for trimming the sides of the type bars, controlsthedriving mechanism of the machine so that the latter shall be stopped whenever a mold or the mold carrier is moved intoioperative position at a time when the trimming mechanism is not in adjustment with the particular mold to be used.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a preferred constructional form 'ofthe invention as applied to such a machine as has just been described, but the details may be modified without getting outside the scope of the invention. t

21, a link operatively connected with the clutch of the driving mechanism of the machine (which clutch and mechanism are not included in the figures) and 22, a lever fulcrumed on the vise frame 20 and having its arms in contact with the front ends of the pin 19 and link 21 respectively. Only two sets of stepsl7 are shown in Fig. 6 to prevent crowding. The motion of the link 21 to the rear stops the driving mechanism of the machine and the reversal of it starts the said mechanism. All the foregoing parts are substantially as heretofore.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, 23 is a hand crank fast on the front end of a shaft 24 rotatable in a bracket 25 fast to the machine frame. 26 is a collar fast on the shaft 24 and having a cam surface 27 operative in the vertical plane. 28 is an arm pivoted on the bracket 25 and provided with two fingers 29, 30, carrying'rollers. The finger 29 engages in an annular groove 31 in the periphery of the boss 11 and thelinger 30 with the camsurface 27 with which it is kept in contact by the spring 9. 32 is a spur wheel loose upon the shaft 24 and in gear with the pinion 3. It has more teeth than the latter, the excess quantity being a whole number which is also an aliquot part of the quantity of teeth onthe, pinion 3. Thus, if the latter has 24 teeth, the wheel 32 may have an excess quantity of four a. 6., of one sixth-Q8 in all. There is a clutch between the shaft 24 and the wheel 32 consisting of a pin wheel 33 fast on the said wheel and having a pin 34 for each aliquot part of the number of teeth in the wheel 32, the respective aliquot part (4 teeth) or a total of seven ins (Fig. 4), each pin being positioned a ter the respective aliquot part (4 teeth). 35 is a clutching finger fast on a slide 36 working in a slot 36 in the collar 26 parallel with the axis of the latter and having the same radius as the pins 34. The presence of the finger 30 in the recess of the cam surface 27, keeps the finger 35 out of engagement with the pin wheel 33, against the resilience of a spring 37. y
The operation of the parts is as follows:
' A rotation of the hand crank23 in the dihit rection of the arrow in Fig. 1, makes the right-hand rise of the cam surface 27 (Fig. 3if the arm 28 is pivoted on the right hand of the collar 26, but in the opposite direction, if that arm is pivotedon the left-hand) swing the arm 28 to the front far enoughto disengage the pinion 3 from the clutching pin 5 and, therefore,-from the driving mech- I anism of the machine, against the resilience of the spring 9, while the spring 37 pulls the finger 35 into engagement with the next p1n (Fig. 4) on the pin wheel'33 thereby locking the wheel 32 to the said crank. The

turns the pinion 3 throu h one rotation, bringing its socket 7 opposite the pin 6 and the cam surface 27 opposite the finger 30, whereupon the spring 9 reengages the pinion 3 with the driving mechanism of the machine and also the finger 30 in the recess in the cam surface 27 making the said finger disengage the finger 35 from the 'pin wheel 33.
Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, 38 is a link connecting the plate 18 to one arm of a bell crank lever 39 fulcrumed on the vise frame 20 and having the other arm connected to an interponent 40sliding in a suitable guide, and 41 a projection upon a mold or upon the 'mold carrier, the arrangement being such that when the adjustable knife 14 has not beenadjusted for the same body as the mold 2 then in use, the knife 14 holds the interponent 40 operatively between the pro jection 41 and the pin 19, so that the movement of the mold in use or of the mold carrier into its operative position (which expression is to include either the casting or the trimming positionthereof) makes the projection 41 engage the interponent and through it the pin 19, thereby pushing them both to the front .(Fi 7 and rocking the lever 22 so as to usht e link 21 to the rear. If, on the other and, the knife 14 has been adjusted, theinterponent 40 will be out of the path of the projection 41 and the link 21 will not bev pushed to the rear. When there are only two molds 2 on the carrier 1, two sets of steps onlthe plate 18, one projection 41, and two positions for the inter onent 40 sufice. If there are more mol s, the number of sets of steps must be increased, which will increase the number of positions for the interponent and require more projections 41 positioned to engage with the respective positions of the interponent.
Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In mechanism of the type described comprising adjustable trimmin mechanism, the combination with the mol carrier andthe driving mechanism of thamachine, of means for controlling the said driving mechanism actuated by the mold carrier when it is moved into its operative position at a time when the trimming mechanism ,is not in proper adjustment.
2. In. mechanism of the type described comprising adjustable trimming mechanism, the'combination with a mold carrier, a pinrality of. molds thereon,; and the driving mechanism of the machine, of means for controlling the said driving mechanism actuatedhy the mold carrier when'it is moved into its operative position at; a time when the trimming mechanism is not in proper adjustment. In mechanism of the type described, the combination with a mold carrier, a plurality of molds thereon, the adjustable trimmmg mechanism, and the driving mechanism of the machine, of means for controlling the said driving mechanism connected to the said trimming mechanism and actuated by the mold carrier when it is moved into its operative position at a'- time when the trimming mechanism is not in proper adjustment.
7. In a machine of the type described, the combination of trimming mechanismadjustable to correspond to difierent sizes of type bodies, driving mechanism, and automatic means for throwin the driving mechanism out of action w en the trimming mechanism is in improper adjustment.-
8. In mechanism of the ty e described, the combination of the adjusta le trimming mechanism, the driving mechanism, and
means whereby the driving mechanism is controlled by the trimming mechanism according to the adjustment of the latter.
9. In mechanism of the type described, the combination of the movable mold carrier, the adjustable trimming mechanism, the driving mechanism, and means controlled by the adjustment of the trimming mechanism whereby the movement of the mold carrier to operativeposition controls the driving mechanism.
10. In mechanism of the combination with the mold adjustable trimming mechanism, and the driving mechanism of the machine, of an interponent connected to the said trimming mechanism and-o eratively held by it between the said mo d carrier and the said' driving mechanism at a time when the said trimming mechanism is not in proper the type described, carrier, the
