Be it known that we, ALFRED BRUNNER and \VILIIELM ScHoNnnmNo, subjects of the Duke of Brunswick and the King of Prussia, Germany, respectively, residing at Leipzig- Eutritzsch and Leipzig-Goldie, Germany, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Quenching and Conveying Glowing Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to' an apparatus for quenching and conveying glowing materials and more especially to apparatus of this character employed in connection wit-h c'oke.
In view of the local conditions before thefurnace-batteries it is often impossible to carry out the quenching of coke, etc, by lowering the carrier intended for the material into the water-tank. In the present invention an alteration has therefore been made by arranging the water-tank for raising and lowering, the quenching process being car ried out by its actuation.
The arrangement can be seen on the drawing.
Figure 1 shows the same with separate carrier and water-tank, whereas Fig.2 shows a coke quenching vessel with combined carrier and water-tank.
The bucket b for taking up the coke discharged from the ovens is on rail a and arranged to travel along the oven-battery. The runway for the water-tank runs parallel to the rail a and consists of the car-frame c and the tank (2 for the water. The latter slides in guides of the frame 0 and can be raised and lowered by means or winches c with common drive through a shaft 9, which are fitted on the car-frame. As cdunterpoise to the weight of thetank and water for quenching purposes suitable counter-weights are provided.
The method of working is as follows:- The coke-bucket Z) is run under the mouth of the retort to be emptied,.under which the water-car c has been already placed. The tank (Z is then raised somewhat so that the water reaches a certain heighli inethe cokebucket, in order to temper the fall o f the coke and thus prevent a breakage of the pieces. As soon as the bucket has been filled the water-tank is more or less slowly raised by the winches 0 until the'i top' layer of coke is also under water. \Vhen a sufficient time has elapsed the water-tank is again lowered and the coke-bucket containing quenched coke is conveyed to ground or other arrangement.
.Thequenching of coke by the'above de scribed method is also possible on plants even if the height of the available space before the ovens only allows of the employ lnentof a-coke quenching carrier, which is a cfirbination of carrier and water-.ank, as shown in Fig. 2. Herethe arrangement is again made that the water-tank (Z in frameguides can be raised after the discharge of the coke into the carrier to inclose the same, and then lowered after the quenching of the coke. In this case water-tank and coke- I carrier can either be transported together or the coke must be transferred for transport on to a conveyer-bandarranged alongside the quenching tank.
Apart from the saving in space in the above arrangementthis method has the advantage that, in drawing oil the coke, especially in large quantities, the water is not forced out of the tank and the steam developed can be made to escape more freely, and forms no hindrance to the quenching, but can even be turned to account in quenching the glowing coke.
What we claim as our sire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A coke quenching device consisting of a perforated coke carrier adapt-ed to be moved to receive coke from the retorts, a traveling member operatively associated with said carrier and movable therewith, a water tank carried by said traveling memher, and means for raising and lowering said water tank with respect to said carrier.
