To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BALGEMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residingat;
Beecher, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters and Slicers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved grater and Another object is to provide a guide for the slicing or grating disk.
Another object is to effect improvements in the construction of the frame or casing. of the machine.
Another object is to provide an improx ed form of discharge spout which serves to drain the juices from the grated material, while discharging the same.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section of a grater and slicer constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is partly a side elevation, and partly a longitudinal view on th plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the guide showing the same attached to the machine. Fig. 6 is a detail plan of a portion of the grating disk. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 6-4) of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a detail plan of the slicing disk. Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line c0 of Fig. 8.
The frame or body 1 of my improved grater and slicer is preferably a single casting and is formed with a standard 2, having a shoulder 3, and a lug 4, projecting from its rear side and spaced apart, the lug being provided with a threaded opening in which operates a clamping screw 5 which has a follower 6 swiveled to its upper end to coact with the shoulder 3 in clamping the device to a table or other suitable support.
Specification of Letters Patent.

The body 1 is formed also with a semicircular web 7 which is provided at one side of its upper portion with a segmental flange 8 which projects from the front side thereof. A feed spout 9 is formed on the rear side of the body 1 and comprises a bottom 10, an inner wall 11, and an outer wall 12. On the front side of the body is a discharge spout 13 which is segmental in form, its bottom being curved, the said discharge spout having an outer wall 14. The body is provided with a bearing 15 for a shaft 16 which has a circular head 17 that bears against the front side of the bearing and also has a screw threaded bore. The head of a screw 18 bears against the rear side of the bearing, the stem of the said screw engaging the rear portion of the threaded bore of the shaft to prevent longitudinal movement of the shaft in the bearing while permitting the shaft to freely rotate.
The crank handle 19 is provided with a threadedstem 20 to engage the bore of the shaft 16, and the grater or slicer disk 22 has a central opening for the reception of the stem 20, so that the central portion of the said disk may be clamped between the shoulder 21 with which the crank handle is provided, and the head 17 of the shaft 16 so as to firmly secure the disk and enable the same to be rotated by means of the crank handle.
The grater disk 22 is provided with a forwardly extending rim 23 at the front end of which is an outwardly extending annular flange 24. The said grater disk which may be made of any suitable sheet metal is provided with triangular openings 25 and with grater teeth 26 which are struck up from the said disk and are formed by turning outwardly and forwardly, the material which forms the said openings, the said grater teeth being arranged in pairs and converging forwardly, as shown, in detail in Figs. 6, and 7. On the front side of the grater disk is a cover plate or disk 27 which covers the openings 25, the said cover disk being disposed within the rim 23 and having a central opening through which the stem 20 of the crank handle 19 extends. The flange 24 of the .grater disk is engaged by a notch 28 in a guide 29 which guide has an arm 30 that bears on the outer wall 12 of the feed trough 9, and is provided with a longitudinal slot 31. A set screw 32 which is here shown as provided with a winged head and which serves to secure the guide to the said wall of the feed spout engages the slot 31 and hence the guide is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally as may be required. The guide by engaging one side of the rim flange of the.
grater disk serves to steady and true the grater disk so as to cause it to run evenly and maintain it under all conditions parallel with the front side of the web of the body, and exactly at right angles to the discharge end of the feed spout. The cover disk with which the grater disk is provided by covering the openings 25 serves to prevent the grated material from passing through the grater disk, and causes the same to drop from the rear side of the grater disk and into the discharge spout 13.
In Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings, I show a slicer disk which may be used instead of the grater disk when the machine is to be employed for slicing vegetables. The slicer disk which is indicated at 83 has a forwardly extending rim 3 1, corresponding to that of the grater disk, and an outwardly extending flange 35 at the front end of the said rim, and corresponding to the flange 24 of the grater disk. In each disk the forwardly extending rim thereof greatly strengthens the construction of the disk and prevents the same from buckling, and hte flange also adds greatly to the strength of the disk as well as serving in connection with the guide to true and steady the said disk. The slicing disk is provided with oppositely extending openings 36 which are tangential to a circle concentric with the disk, and in connection with the slicing disk, I employ a pair of slicing blades 37 which are united by a hub element 58 which is concentric with the disk, the said blades being disposed in the openings 36 and extending therethrough, and being inclined at an angle of about 45 with respect to the plane of the disk as shown in Fig. 9. The width of the openings 36 is such that the slicing blades anay be adjusted laterally therein. 11; will be understood that ween the slicing disk is placed on the machine instead of the grating disk, the said slicing disk together with its blades 37 will be clamped between the head 17 of the shaft 16, and the shoulder 21 of the crank handle, the said shoulder bearing against the hub portion 38 of the slicing device. The slicing disk may be adjusted to any desired distance from the head 17, and the discharge end of the feed spout according to the desired thickness of the slice-rs by interposing one or more ashers of suitable thickness between the center of the said slicing disk and the head 17 as will be understood, the adjustable guide 29 admitting of any desired or necessary adjustment of the slicing disk. I also provide a supplemental spout 40 which may be used in connection with the discharge spout 13. The said supplemental spout comprises side walls 11, 42, and a perforated bottom 13. One of the side walls of the supplemental spouts may be attached to the outer wall 141- of the spout 13, as indicated at 4A, in Fig. 1, so as to dispose the perforated bottom of the supplemental spout somewhat above the bottom of the discharge spout 13. The material grated or sliced by the operation of the machine will drop on the perforated bottom of the supplemental spout 18, the sliced or grated material thus freed of its juices, being discharged directly from the lower end of the supplemental spout.
I claim 1. A machine of the class described, including a cutter, a discharge spout adapted to receive the cut material. and sloping clownwardly from the cutter and a draining spout detachably connected to the discharge spout and formed with a perforated bottom mounted in and spaced from the bottom of the discharge spout, the draining spout projecting outwardly and downwardly from the discharge spout and the two spouts being 1 formed with distinct discharging ends.
2. A machine of the class described, including a cutter, a discharge spout adapted to receive the out material, and a draining spout projecting from the discharge end of the first named spout and detachably connected thereto and formed with a perforated bottom mounted in and spaced above the bottom of the discharge spout, the two spouts being formed with distinct discharge openmgs.
3. A machine of the class described in cluding a cutter, a discharge spout below the same, and a draining spout formed with a notched side wall, the discharge spout being formed with aside having pins to engage said notches whereby to detachably connect the draining spout to the discharge spout with the draining spout projected forwardly from the discharge end of the discharge spout, the draining spout being formed with a perforated bottom extended into the discharge spout and spaced from the bottom of the latter, the two spouts being formed with distinct discharge openings.
