Be it known that I, CORNELIUS AM- BRUSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Pad Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a receptacle or holder for an ink pad, which is normally closed by a cover or lid and which is provided with cover or lid actuating means that permit the user to operate a hand stamp and also the cover or lid with one hand and without danger of inking the latter.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof but will first be described in connection with the embodiment selected from other embodiments of it for illustration in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a perspective view showing the lid or cover in open position. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1, showing the lid in closed position and illustrating the lid actuating mechanism. Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view showing the lid in open position and illustrating mechanism for closing it or permitting it to close. Fig. 4, is a similar view illustrating a modification, and Figs. 5 and 6, are similar views illustrating another modification.
In the drawings 1, is a base which may consist of a panel, as of wood. The base is provided with a cavity 2, in which is arranged an ink pad 3, and an ink pad tray 4.
5, is a hinged lid or cover for covering the pad.
Referring to Figs. 1-3, 6 is a finger lever arranged operat-ively in respect to the face of the base and at an appropriate distance from the ink pad for permitting the operation of the lever without danger of getting ink on the hands. As shown this lever 6, comprises a push button. 7, is a lever pivoted intermediate of its ends as at 8. One end of this lever is arranged for operation by the part 6, and the other end 9, of this lever is somewhat cam-shaped and operates upon a projection 10, on the lid or cover so that when the part 6, is pushed the end 9, rises and operating on the projection 10, turns the cover about its pivot 11, into the position shown in Fig. 3. The cooperation between the projection 10 on the cover and the offset end 9 of the lever 7 is as follows:

Referring to Fig. 2, when the part 6 is pushed the end of the projection 10 is in contact with some part of the offset 9 be low the highest point thereof. which part may be called the shank, to distinguish it from the end of the offset portion. As the lid is raised, the point of contact shifts and, as shown in Fig. 2, the lefthand side of the projection 10 engages the end of the offset 9 and continues so to do until the lid is fully opened. In this way the angular movement of the lever '7 is decreased by the angle subtended between what has been called the shank and the point of the offset. This, among other thin 's, is advantageous because it enables the structure as a whole to be made very compact. In the position shown in Fig. 3 a lip 12, on the cover overliesa projection 18, on the tray 1. The tray l, is capable of a turning movement about the fulcrum 14:, so that when the front (right hand in Fig. 8) is depressed as by the pressure on the hand stamp the projection 13, operating on the lip 12, turns the lid or cover 5, to the right of the vertical so that when the pad is released the lid closes by gravity. It may be said that the extreme end of the projection 13, operates upon the portion of the lip 12, which is to the left in Fig. 3, of the pivot 11. The pivot lei, or fulcrum is to one side of the center of the pad thus giving the latter a normal position.
In use the operator may hold the hand stamp in one hand and press the push button 6, which opens the lid in the manner described. The lid will then remain open in substantially vertical position, perhaps resting on the rear all of the cavity, and the operator may apply ink to the hand stamp by applying it to the rear portion of the ink pad. lVhen the operator has finished he may apply the hand stamp to the front portion of the ink pad which will t-ip up the back portion of the ink pad and cause the end of the projection 13, to tip the lid toward closing position in which it will remain until the pad is released as by the removal of the hand stamp from it whereupon the rear part of the pad will move down by its weight and permit the lid to close by gravity.
The construction and mode of operation shown in Fig. 4, is as above described except that the projection 13, overlies the lip 12", and the pad is normally elevated by a spring 15. Ordinarily the stamp is applied to the front part of the pad but when applied to the rear part of the pad it turns the lid into closing position and when the pad is released the lid will close.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the push button 6 operating on the lever 7*, opens the lid in the manner described but the cam shaped end 9 of the lever is provided with a notch which holds the lid in open position but tilted at such an angle that when released it will close by gravity. The lever 16, is pivoted as at 11, and is provided with a push button 17. This lever 16, is also provided with a finger 18, that extends forward from the plane of the paper in Fig. 6, and overlies the lever 7 in rear of its pivot so that when the button 17, is pushed the projection l8, pushes the part 9% clear of the projection 10, and thus the lid closes by gravity.
it will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit oi the invention, hence I do not limit myself in regard to those matters in any way further than the state of the art may require, but
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A receptacle for an ink pad comprising the combination of a box having a hinged lid, an inking pad movable in the box, a
finger lever, lid opening mechanism operated by the finger lever, and lid closing mechanism operated by the pad, substantially as described.
2. In a receptacle for an ink pad the com bination of a hinged lid, a movable pad which when pressed upon one portion is inoperative and which when pressed on another portion is operative to effect closing of the lid, and mechanism interposed between the pad and lid and adapted upon pressure of the pad to put the lid into position for closing and upon release of such pressure to permit the lid to close, substantially as described.
3. In a receptacle for an ink pad the combination of a hinged lid, arocking pad, and means interposed between the pad and lid whereby when 'the pad is pressed the lid is put into position to close and when the pad is released the lid closes, substantially as described.

In a receptacle for an ink pad the combination of a hinged lid provided with a projection and a pivotal lever having an ofiset portion the shank and end of which are adapted to operate progressively upon the end and side of the projection, thus limiting the necessary angular movement of the lever for operating the lid.
