DUMP-DOOR-OPERATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dump-Door-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dump door operating mechanism.
More particularly it relates to dump door operating mechanism for the kind of dump cars having a series of doors extending from end to end of the car body or doors between the body bolster and the end of the car.
Among the objects which my invention attains is that of removing a source of inconvenience and danger to trainmen in the practical operation of railroads, and in the coupling and uncoupling of cars, by obviating the necessity of projecting the ends of the longitudinally disposed operating shaft employed in cars of the kind referred to beyond the plane of the car ends. The manner of accomplishing this and other objects of my invention will appear more clearly from the description herein following taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the side por tion of a railroad car, together with the door operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the end portion of a car showing the end of the operating shaft.
In the drawings 3 represents the body of a dump car of any suitable construction, 4 the Wheels, the side sills, 6 the upright stakes or frame members of the body, 7 the upright sides of the car body, 8 an end sill, 9 an end of the car body, 10 a railroad track rail, 11 the center sills. The upright sides 7 are turned inwardly at the bottom, as illustrated at the point indicated by the numeral 12. The operating shaft 13 extends along the side of the car body, and operates in suitable journals provided therefor. The doors 14,14 are each operatively connected to the said shaft by the door opening devices 15, 15, which may be of any suitable kind.

the car body are the angle irons 16 and 17. These irons depend from the car body, and are spaced apart, 17 being the forward and 16 the rear iron. A block or plate 18 is preferably placed between one of said irons, preferably the forward iron 17, and the inwardly turned portion of the car side, the said block or plate 18 being preferably provided with an out-er flange 19 through which it is riveted to the iron 17 and an inner flange 20 through which it is riveted to the car body. The block or plate 18 is perforated longitudinally of the car, and furnishes a bearing for the operating shaft which passes therethrough. Said shaft terminates back of the plane of the cars end 9 and in front of the iron 17 which with the block or plate 18 are sufficiently removed from the end of the car to permit the latch wheel 21, the pawl 22, the lock 23, and the ratchet lever 2% containing ratchet wheel 25 and ratchet pawl 26, all to be placed on the operating shafts end back of the plane of the cars end. The pawl 22 for the latch wheel is secured to the plate 18, and the lock 23 for said pawl is preferably secured to the iron 17. The iron 17 is secured at its lower end to the car body by the brace 27, and the iron 16 by the brace 28.
It will be apparent that by the construction described a secure end bearing for the operating shaft is provided, although various parts could be slightly altered or changed about without affecting the important feature of providing novel and practicable means for shortening the operating shaft to the length of the car body or less, and thereby not endanger or inconvenience those who in the operation of trains are obliged to work thereabout.
I claim 1. Ina dump car, a car body, doors from end to end in said car body, a longitudinally disposed operating shaft journaled thereon, said shaft being of a length not greater than the length of the car body, a bar secured to the car body, a plate secured between said bar and the car body, and adapted to receive the operating shaft therethrough, said plate being back of the plane of the end of the car body.
2. In a dump car, a car body, body bolsters therein, a series of doors extending beyond the body bolsters at either end, an operating shaft of no greater length than the length of the car body, door opening devices connecting the doors and shaft, journals for said shaft, one of said journals comprising a perforated plate and a bar, the said bar being secured to the car side, and the plate being secured between the said bar and oi side, back of the car end.

In a dump car having doors between the body bolsters and the car ends, upright sides having a bottom inwardly turned por tion, doors, an operating shaft journaled to the outside of the car, and along the inwardly turned portion of'the side of the car, door opening devices connecting the shaft with the doors, a bar dependent from the upright portion of the side of the car, a plate secured between said bar and the car side, and adapted to receive the operating shaft therethrou gh, the said shafts ends being back of the car end.
4. In a dump car having doors between the body bolsters and the car ends, upright sides having a bottom inwardly turned portion, doors,'an operating shaft journaled to the outside of the car, and along the inwardly turned portion of the side of the car, said shaft being of a length not greater than the length of the car body, door opening devices connecting the shaft with the doors, a bar dependent from the upright portion ofthe side of the car, a plate secured between said bar and the car side, and adapted to receive the operating shaft therethrough, the said plate being provided with flanges through which it is secured between said bar and the car side.
5. In a dump car having doors between the body bolsters and the car ends, upright sides having a bottom inwardly turned portion, doors, an operating shaft journaled to the outside of the car and along the inwardly turned portion of the side of the car, said shaft being of no greater length than the length of the car body, door opening devices connecting the shaft with the doors, a bar dependent from the upright portion of the side of the car, a plate secured between said bar and the car side, and adapted to receive the operating shaft therethrough, and braces secured at one end to the said bar and to the car side at the other end.
6. In a dump car having doors between the body bolsters and the car ends, upright sides having a bottom inwardly turned por-v tion, doors, an operating shaft journaled to the outside of the car and along the inwardly turned portion of the side of the car, door opening devices connecting the shaft with the doors, a bar dependent fro-m the upright portion of the side of the car, a plate secured between said bar and the car side, and adapted to receive the operating shaft therethrough, a further bar dependent from the upright portion of the car side,
and ladder rungs secured between said bar and the first mentioned bar. i
7. In a dump car, a car body, doorsfrom end to end in said car body, a longitudinally disposed operating shaft, means for mounting said shaft, the said shaft being of a ]length not greater'than the length of the car 8.
