UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARGYLE CAMPBELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ENTERPRISE RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DUMP-CAR.
Patented Jan. 27, 1914.
Original application filed December 6, 1911, Serial No. 864,291. Divided and this application filed September Serial No. 720,150.
To aZ Z whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARoYLn CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dump Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cars and more particularly to such cars in which a part1- tion or partitions are used to subdivide the car into sections. In practice it is found that when cars of this character are used, partitions may be provided, but are frequently in the .way when not in use, or are lost.
My invention concerns itself with additional means within the car where these partitions may be accommodated when not in actual use, the space reserved for the partitions being at the end of the car where the space taken up will not materially decrease the total available space of the car.
My application herein is a divisional application of my original application Serial No. 664,291, filed Dec. 6, 1911, in which the invention herein was originally disclosed. In my aforesaid co-pending application I set forth a novel hopper and underframing con struction for dump cars, and the structure outlined in this present application is of considerable use in connection, for instance, with such cars as outlined in my original application.
The invention herein is shown particularly in connection with what is known as a ballast car, but it will of course be understood that the invention for that reason is not limited to such specific application, but that the principle of the invention is readily applicable to many types of cars.
I will explain one embodiment of my invention more particularly by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the same as applied to a dump car.
Figure 1 is a plan view of one-half of a car embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section of a car showing the partition in elevation.
l Referring to the drawing I show one-half of a car having the end wall 14 and the side walls 11 which form parts of the car body 10. The end floor of the car 13 also forms part of the car structure, the remaining portion of the half of the car illustrated being taken up by hoppers whose floors are shown at 12 and whose doors are illustrated at 18. neutral walls 17 are provided for the hoppers to divide them into sections. The central longitudinal hopper sheet is illustrated a t It The hinge pins 26 support the hopper doors 18.
The car is provided with a partition 30 which may be removable. This partition is normally held in place in the openings 10 between angle irons 39, these angle irons being fastened to the sides of the car interiorly of the car. The partition separates the hopper portion of the car from the end portion of the car as it is frequently desirable to use the car in such a manner. Now when it is desired to utilize the entire interior space of the car without subdivision, it is necessary to remove the partition 30. The ordinary cars do not have provision to accommodate the partition when not in use. Partitions thus frequently become lost as the conditions of railway service frequently bring this about. In order to accommodate this partition when not in use I provide a space at the end of the car to accommodate this partition where this partition will not be in the way nor take up any substantial space. To this end I provide angle irons 42 which between themselves and the end wall of the car 14 form openings 41 adapted to receive the partition and to hold the same when not in use. It will thus be seen that loss of the partition is practically eliminated and said partition is accommodated without wasting any space.
My invention will thus be readily understood and its application to other cars will be readily apparent.
Having, however, thus described a specific form which the invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a dump car having a load separating partition, a pair of slots at the end of the said car to receive and store said partition When not in actual service.
2. In a dump car provided with load separating partitions, a pair of slots at either 5 end of said car for receiving said partition 1 When not in actual use.
3. In a dum car having load separating partitions, a s 0t at the ends of the earl formed by the car end, and vertically arranged angle irons providing space for stor- 10 in g said partitions when not in actual service.
ARGYLE CAMPBELL.
