UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN PANIAN, OF
EVELETH, MINNESOTA.
SMOKE AND HEAT PROTECTOR FOR FIREMEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN PANIAN, a subject of Austria, residing at Eveleth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke and Heat Protectors for Firemen; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to smoke and heat protectors for firemen and has for its object the provision of a convenient air conveyer and spray dress in combination with the fire hose.
It consists of the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my said invention, showing the manner of wearing said dress. Fig. 2, is a central section of a helmet and of a fragment of a coat forming part of said dress, showing a water conducting connection between them.
A power chamber and an air chamber are provided between the waterhose sections 2 and 3 to communicate with one or more lines of air hose 10. Forming part of said invention is a head dress of any suitable material or construction as a helmet 12, provided with a suitable air chamber 12 connected by said air hose 10 with said air chamber and adapted to receive air there from, said chamber 12 being provided with one or more outlet ports 12* adapted to discharge air toward the face of the wearer of said helmet. Forming part of said invention is a coat 13 provided with one or more water conduits 13 of any suitable construction formed therein or secured thereto. The said conduits 13 are connected to said water hose by a branch hose let, and to a water conduit 15 formed in or secured to said helmet, which latter conduit is provided with discharge ports 15 through which water is Specification of Letters Patent.

discharged over the head of the wearer and over the outside of said helmet. Ports 16 are preferably formed in said helmet through which water will be drained from the head of the wearer. Forming part of, or secured to said helmet is a combined veil and cape 17 provided with a window l7 which window is preferably closed with mica. Since my invention is primarily intended for fighting fire at close range, in confined places I preferably omit a pressure or fire nozzle from the free end of said hose 3, in which case the water pressure in said helmet and coat will not be great; but, if desired a nozzle may be used, and a reducing valve (not shown) inserted into the line of said branch hose 1 1.
Said invention may be constructed of any suitable materials, any suitable construction of hose or hose couplings may be used and may be modified or altered in minor details or by the substitution of mechanical equivalents within the scope of my claim.
What I claim is:
In a smoke and heat protector, a helmet comprising a body portion and a depending veil and cape, said body portion being provided with an annular water sprinkling conduit adapted to discharge Water upon all sides of the wearers head and also over the outer surface of said helmet, said helmet being provided with drainage ports for draining water from the interior thereof, said helmet having an air chamber formed therein provided with ports for discharging air from said air chamber toward the face of the wearer, and means for supplying water and air under pressure to said sprinkling conduit and said air chamber respectively. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN PANIAN.
