WRAPPER-PASTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. Snunrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at M cores, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rapper- Pasting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrapper pasting devices, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of paste holder having an improved construction and arrangement of bottom controlling the outlet of the paste and also operating to wipe excess paste from the sheet as the latter is drawn from under the paste holder.
A further object is to provide a paste holder with an improved springpressed bottom having a sheet contacting edge of non-metallic material which is pressed against the sheet to be pasted, and which is also provided with means for adjustment whereby the outlet from the paste holder is controlled to suit conditions.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is an improvement upon the structure disclosed in Patent No. 1,033,282 granted to me July 23, 1912.
'With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 3 is aview in transverse section through the paste holder and in longitudinal section through the base and sheets thereon all on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 1 is a broken view in. front elevation of the paste holder.

front wall 9 being preferably inclined as shown, the front edges of the ends 8 being shaped to give the proper incline to front plate 9.
Vertical tubes 1.0 are secured to the back ilate (3 by webs 11, and these tubes 10 receive uprights 2 and are guided by the latter. The elevation is determined by the thickness of the pile of sheets 1 as it is to be understood that the paste holder rests directly upon the sheets 4-.
An angle strip 12 is secured to front plate (3, and this angle plate has openings registering with the openings in the tubes 10 to allow a free positioning of said tubes onto the uprights, and furthermore the strip 12 acts to limit the movement of the spurs 13 which prick the uppermost sheets 1 sufficiently to prevent but a single sheet from being removed at a time. These spurs are formed at the ends of rods 1 1 movable through brackets 15 and have springs 16 around the rods, exerting downward pressure on the spurs, and openings 5 are formed in base plate 1 to receive the spurs when in their lowest position.
By reference particularly to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the front plate 9 at its lower edge terminates an appreciable distance above the bottom of the paste holder and that the ends of the paste holder in a plane below the lower edge of front wall 9 are connected by a rod. 17. This rod 17 acts as a fulcrum for the adjustable bottom 18 of the paste holder. The bottom 18 is composed of sheet metal, and. at its edge, within the paste holder, is bent at an angle as shown at 19, and has rigidly secured thereto a strip 20 preferably of raw hide or other nonmetallic material. This strip 20 is reinforced by a metal strip 21, said strips 20 and 21 being secured to the end 19 in any approved manner. To the front plat 9 at its inner face, and its lower edge, a strip 22 preferably of raw hide or other non-metallic material is secured by means of a confining metal strip 23, and this strip 22 bears against the upper face of bottom 18 so as to render the same water tight in any position of its adjustment. The strips 22 and 23 extend around the ends of the paste holder, and are secured thereto as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so that throughout the entire upper surface of the bottom within the paste holder, the strip 22 acts to prevent leakage as will be readily understood. An angle plate 24 is secured to front plate 9, and is provided with rivets 25 which operate to pivotally connect levers 26 to said plate. These levers 26 are pivotally supported between their ends, two levers being preferabl employed, and Said levers are connected by links 27 with the bottom 18. When the levers are swung in one direction, the bottom 18 will be caused to move toward or away from back plate 7, thereby regulating the opening between the back plate and strip 20, hence controlling the outlet of paste. Coiled springs 30 connect the forward portion of bottom 18 with the upper portion of front plate 9 and exert a continued upward pressure on the forward portion of the bottom, thereby pressing downwardly the strip 20 into close contact with the sheets 4. This pressure is sufficient to prevent the sheets from drawing an excessive amount of paste as the strip 20 wipes off the excess. To regulate the downward pressure of the strip 20, I provide set screws 29 which are screwed through angle strip at and which are engaged by the bottom 18 as the latter is held thereagainst by the springs 30, hence by ad justing these screws, any desired pressure may be had. It will thus be seen that by adjusting the levers 26, the size of the opening can be adjusted to suit conditions, and in any position of adjustment the strip 20 will be held with sufficient pressure against the sheets 4 to properly distribute the paste.
After the sheets 4 are in position on the base plate 1, the paste receptacle may be readily supported on the sheets by positioning the tubes 10 over the uprights 2, and the weight of the device will compel it to move downwardly as the pile of sheets become diminished.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by etters Patent is:
1. A paste holder comprising a receptacle, and a bottom in said receptacle movable transversely relative to the receptacle and having pivotal movement, springs exerting pressure on the bottom pressing one edge of the bottom downwardly, said downwardly pressed edge located within the receptacle and in proximity to the rear wall thereof, and a strip of non-metallic material secured to said last-mentioned edge of the bottom and adapted to press downwardly upon sheets to be pasted, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising a receptacle, a bottom pivotally support-ed between its longitudinal edges and movable relative to a wall of the receptacle to regulate the outlet of paste, and means adapted to press one edge of said bottom into engagement with the sheets to be pasted, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle, a bottom pivotally supported between its longitudinal edges and movable relative to a wall of the receptacle to regulate the outlet of paste, means adapted to press one edge of said bottom into engagement with the sheets to be pasted, and a strip of non-metallic material secured to said sheet contacting edge of the bottom, substantially as described.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising a trough-like receptacle having a front plate terminating above the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle, a bottom positioned over said rod and extending at one edge beyond the front of the receptacle, and elastic means connecting the front edge of said bottom with the upper portion of the receptacle, substantially as described.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a trough-like receptacle having a front plate terminating above the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle, a bottom positioned over said rod and extending at one edge beyond the front of the receptacle, elastic means connecting the front edge of said bottom with the upper portion of the receptacle, and means for moving said bottom toward and away from the rear wall of the receptacle, substantially as described.
6. A. device of the character described, comprising a trough-like receptacle having a front plate terminating above the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle, a bottom positioned over said rod and extending at one edge ends of the receptacle, a bottom positioned over said rod and extending at one edge be yond the front of the receptacle, and elastic means connecting the front edge of said bottom with the upper portion of the receptacle, means for moving said bottom to- ISO ward and away from the rear Wall of the receptacle, a strip of non-metallic material secured to the inner face of the receptacle front and bearing upon the bottom, and a second strip of non-metallic material secured to the bottom and adapted to be pressed downwardly uponuthe sheets to be pasted, substantially as described.
8. A device of the character described, comprising a trouglrshaped receptacle having its front wall terminating short of the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle below the lower end of the front wall, a bottom located above the rod and below the lower end of the front wall, said bottom extending in front of the front wall, a strip of nonmetallic material secured to the inner edge of said bottom and movable relative to the rear wall of the receptacle, and springs connecting the forward edge of said bottom with the upper portion of the front wall of said receptacle, substantially as described.
9. A device of the character described, comprising a trough-shaped receptacle having its front wall terminating short of the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle below the lower end of the front wall, a bottom located above the rod and below the lower end of the front wall, said bottom extending in front of the front wall, a strip of non-metallic material secured to the inner edge of said bottom and movable relative to the rear wall of the receptacle, an angle plate secured to the front wall of said receptacle, levers pivoted between their ends to said angle plate, and devices connecting said levers with the bottom, whereby the movement of the levers causes the bottom to move toward and away from the rear wall of the receptacle, substantially as described.
10. A device of the character described, comprising a trough-shaped receptacle having its front wall terminating short of the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle below the lower end of the front wall, a bottom located above the rod and below the lower end of the front wall, said bottom extending in front of the front wall, a strip of non-metallic material secured to the inner edge of said bottom and movable relative to the rear wall of the receptacle, an angle plate secured to the front wall of said receptacle, levers pivoted between their ends to said angle plate, and
devices connecting said lovers with the bottom, whereby the movement of the levers causes the bottom to move toward and away from the rear wall of the receptacle, and coiled springs connecting the forward portion of the bottom with the upper portion of the front wall, whereby a continuous downward pressure is had upon the inner edge of the bottom, substantially as described.
11. The combination with a base, and uprights on the base, of a paste holder comprising a trough-like receptacle, tubes secured to the rear wall of the receptacle and movable on the uprights, said uprights constituting stops limiting the movement of sheets on the base, an adjustable bottom in said receptacle, an angle strip secured to the rear wall of said receptacle and adapted to rest upon the sheets to be pasted, and springpressed spurs projected through said angle strip and adapted to engage the sheets to be pasted, substantially as described.
12. A device of the character described, comprising a trmiglrshaped receptacle having its front wall terminating short of the lower edge of the receptacle, a rod connecting the ends of the receptacle below the lower end of the front wall, a bottom located above the rod and below the lower end of the front wall, said bottom extending in front of the front wall, a strip of non-metallic material secured to the inner edge of said bottom and movable relative to the rear wall of the receptacle, an angle plate secured to the front wall of said receptacle, levers pivoted between their ends to said angle plate, devices connecting said levers with the bottom, whereby the movement of the levers causes the bottom to move toward and away from the rear wall of the receptacle, coiled springs connecting the forward portion of the bottom with the upper portion of the front wall, whereby a continuous downward pressure is had upon the inner edge of the bottom, and set screws positioned in openings in the angle plate and limiting the upward move ment of the forward end of the bottom, substantially as described.
