To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK W. BURPEE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of the city of Bellingham, in the county of lVhatcom and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting and Dieing `De vices, of which the following is a specification, this being a division of my application, Serial No. 660,156, filed November 13, 1911.
My invention relates to devices of the above type and has for its primary object the provision of a construction which is primarily devised for forming heads or closures for receptacle bodies.
A further object resides in the provisions of such a construction wherein the heads o1' closures as formed are suitably apertured.
With the above and other objects in view, to be referred to as my description progresses, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined. in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, illustrating` a practical embodiment of my invention and wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout; Figure 1 is an end elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section illustrating the dies in operation. Fig. 3 is a similar View with the dies open. Fig. Ll; is a fragmentary section of the female die, on a large scale. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of the male die, and Fig. 6 is a top plan of the mechanism.
. Reference numerals 14 and 15 indicate hollow cutting and forming dies, the former or male die of which is carried by a recipro catory slide 16, guided in lugs 10 of an up right 12 of the main frame 13, while die 15 is fixed to an extension 17 of said upright.
Reference numeral 11 indicates a chute arranged between and below dies 14 and 15 and fixed as by a screw bolt 11 to extension 17.
Die 15 is provided with a cutting edge 15 and an internal 'annular forming section 15, the latter being spaced inwardly from the former to permit of the entrance therebetween of die 14, which latter flares slightly at its end to its outer or cutting edge to thereby first coact with cutting edge 15 to eut out the blank, as A, and then during further advance movement to bend the edge portion of such blank over the adjacent end of forming section 15".
Reference numeral 19 indicates a yieldingly held presser consisting of a ring encircling an internal auxiliary cutting die 18 of die 14, the same during advance movement of said die let pressing and lirmly holding the blank against the end of forming section 15, which end is grooved, as shown more clearly in Fig. l, to provide a cutting edge 15 at the edge of the bore of said forming section. Subsequently to this operation of the presser, die 1S moves into die forming section 15 and, enacting with the inner or cutting edge 15a thereof, cuts the usual outlet opening in the formed blank which is to serve as the top wall of the receptacle.
Reference numeral 2G indicates a tube communicating with the bore of die 15 for conducting the vaste center cuttings from the blank to a suitable point of discharge.
An ejector 20 is slidably mounted in die 15 on the forming section 15 thereof, the same being provided with rearwardly extending stems 21 which project to the rear of the die for movement into the path of a positive actuator 23, slidably mounted on tube 2G. Springs 22 are also preferably engaged with stems 21 to project the ejector 20, these acting quickly upon withdrawal of die lll, but as such yielding means is not at all times as certain in its action as might be desired, I provide the positive actuator 23. which being connected by rods 21 to pins 25 of slide 16 to rccijgirocate with die 14, will in the event of springs 22 failing to perform their function strike stems 21 and thereby operate the ejector.
Reference numeral 3() indicates a drive shaft provided with an eccentric 31 with which a strap 32 is engaged. Connected with strap 32 by a driving rod 33 is an operating lever 34 for slide 1G, said lever being fulcrumed at 34 and having its upper end portion bifurcated and pivotally connected with slide pins 25.
.Reference numeral 10 indicates a strip of paper from which the blanks are cut. This is preferably of considerable length, and in my said application Serial No. 660,156, tiled November 13, 1911, of which this is a division, the same is wound on a spool and fed downwardly following opening of the dies. The manner of feeding paper or the type of paper fed is immaterial. Then however, a
strip of paper is employed to have the blanks cut therefrom, I employ a movable guide 41, this being connected with rods 42, slidably engaged with lever 34 and having a. yielding driving connection therewith through the medium of springs 43, for movement of its upper end portion in common with slide 16, which last named end portion of guide 41 is suitably apertured, as at a, to permit of its clearing die 15 for proper coaction of the latter with die 14, which following forward movement of said guide engages the strip of paper and presses the same against die 15 to effect the cutting of the blank, as hereinbefore set forth. Guide 41 is secured at its lower end portion, as at 41', to standard 12 and has its upper end portion lying at the forward side of the strip of paper so as to be capable of moving the latter clear of the path of travel of the formed closure to chute 11,.
ln operation, power is applied to shaft 30, as by a belt, not shown, taking over a pulley 50 to thereby oscillate lever 34, during advance movement of which the blank is cut and formed and during retractive movenient of which the formed blank is ejected by ejector 2O into chute 11.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America,
1. In a machine of the character described, a male forming die, a female forming die, means for reciprocating one of said dies, a yieldingly held ejector for removing the formed article from said female die, and a positive actuator for said ejector operated by and during movement of said movable die.
2. In a machine of the character described, a die provided with outer and inner continuous cutting edges spaced one from the other, said die being further provided with a forming section intermediateA its cutting edges, a second die provided with a cutting edge for coaction with the outer cutting edge of said first-named die and with a forming section for bending a blank over the forming section of said first-named die, an internal cutting section to said lastnamed die lying inwardly and rearwardly of said flrst-named cutting edge thereof for coaction with the inner cutting edge of said rst-named die, and means for reciprocating one of said dies toward and from the other.
3. In a machine of the character described, a die provided with a cutting edge and an internal hollow forming section spaced from said cutting edge and provided at the edge of its bore with a cutting edge, a second die provided with a cuttingedge for coaction with the cutting edge of said first die, said second die being provided with a hollow forming section flaring outwardly toward its said cutting edge for bending a blank over the forming section of said irst die, means in said second die for yieldingly pressing the blank against the forming section of said first die, an internal cutting edge to said second die lying inwardly and rearwardly of said first-named cutting edge thereof for cutting against the inner cutting edge of said first-named die, and means for reciprocating one of said dies.
