To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. OLIVER, citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleds or Sleighs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to charactors of reference marked. thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in sleighs; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to certain novel improvements in the details of the construction of that class of sleds which are used by merchants, express drivers, and others, for conveying merchandise and packages from place to place.
This invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed sled or sleigh of the general character and construction hereinafter more particularly specified, all with a view of providing a vehicle the parts of which, while in the course of manufacture, can be very readily, quickly and easily assembled, and furthermore to provide a very strong and rigid construction.
Other objects of this invention at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
\Vith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel sled or sleigh hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combination of the de vices and parts, as Well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sled made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 22 in said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-charaeter 1 indicates a complete sled, in the form of a boxsled, made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the same comprising a number of transverse or laterally extcnding body-braces or supports 2, the connecting runner 3 at each side, and the body l mounted and supported upon the step-boards or raves secured to and upon the said braces 2.
Each body-brace or support 2, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, consists, essentially, of a central bar 5, preferably of rectangular cross-section, the endportions of the said bar being beveled, as shown at 2 in said Fig. 2. The reference-elmracter 7 indicates suitable vertically disposed knee-pieces or members, each piece or member 6 being formed with a suitably shaped knee 8 having a beveled end portion 9, and cut-away part 10, the said beveled end-portions 9 of the respective knees registering with the beveled cnd-por tions (3 of the central bar 5, as clearly illustrated in said Fig. 2 of the drawings. Each knee-piece or member 7 is also provided with an upwardly projecting post-like member or element 11, and with a downwardly projecting leg or member 12, the lower end-portion of which is made with a suitably shaped tenon 13, much in the form of the tenons of the spokes of a wheel, said tenons 13 being inserted in suitably disposed and correspondingly formed receiving sockets 14 with which the runners 3 are provided. The said downwardly projecting legs or members 12 and the said runners 8 are further rigidly connected by means of metal plates 15, preferably triangular in shape, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the said plates being secured to the inner surface-portions of said legs and the runners by means of rivets or bolts, as 16. Suitably secured upon the outer surface-portion of each knee-piece or member 7 by means of the usual carriagebolts 17, or similar fastening devices, is a bracket-like member 18. Extending from the bracket at one side of each body-brace or support 2 to the bracket at the other side of said brace or support, and extending across the knees 8, and the central bar 5, and disposed upon the opposite faces of said brackets, knees, and the central bar, are suitably formed side-braces or bars 19, all of said parts being suitably and rigidly secured in their assembled relations by means of wirenails 20, the parts all being made of wood, or other similar fastening means, such as screws, or the like. These several parts are also further braced and rigidly secured to gether by means of a lower brace or bar 21, which is secured to the lower surfaceportions of the central bar 5 and the sidebraces or bars 19, by means of wire-nails 22, or other similar fastening means, as screws or the like, the said lower brace or bar 21 having its end-portions 23 snugly fitting in the cut-away parts 10 of the knees 8, so as to perfectly register therewith, and thereby providing a body-brace or support 2, which is very strong and rigid, and the several. members or parts of which are most easily and readily secured in their assembled relations, as will be clearly evident. Additional iron braces or rods, as 24, of the usual construction, may be employed, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the said braces or tie-rods being secured at their end-portions by means of the usual bolts to the body-braces or supports 2 and the runners 3. As shown, each runner 3 is suitably spliced at its forward end-portion to an arc-shaped member 25, said member being protected by means of a correspondingly formed iron-band 26, the upper free end-portion of which is made in the form of a screw-threaded shank 27, which extends through the front-board 28 of the box or body 4 of the sled, and is secured and held in place by means of a nut 29. Suit ably secured upon the lower surface-portion of each runner 3 is a runner-iron or shoe 30, the forward end-portion of each runner-iron or shoe being suitably spliced and secured to the lower endportion of the corresponding iron-band 26 by means of a suit-able screw or bolt, as 31.
The body or box 4 of the sled consists of the usual base-boards 32 which are suitably mounted upon and secured to the several body-braces or supports 2, the herein-above mentioned dash or front board 28, the tailboard 33, and the two longitudinally extending side-boards 34. Resting and suitably secured upon the upper edge-portions of the previously mentioned brackets 18 are the raves, run-boards or step-boards 35. As shown, the side-boards 34 rest with their lower marginal edge-portions upon said raves, run, or step-boards 35, said boards 34 being placed against the said upwardly projecting post-like members or elements 11,
and being suitably secured in place by means of screws or bolts, as 36, or by means of any other suitable fastening devices. Referring now to Figs. 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the drawings, it will be seen, that upon the lower surface of the body 4, and at the rear of the said body, is suitably secured a crossbar 37, while within the said body, and secured in the corners which are formed by the said tail-board 33 and the side-boards 34, by means of wire-nails 38, or other similar fastening means, such as screws or the like, are vertical posts 39. During the process of construction of the sled, the connected portions of the said tail-board, the side-boards, and the said posts 39, are provided, by means of a burning iron, with a tubular portion 40, said tubular portion 40 extending also through the crossbar 37 and arranged in each tubular portion 40 is a tie-bolt 41, which is securely held in place by means of its head 42 and a nut 43 screwed upon the screw-threaded part of the shank of each bolt, substantially as shown in the several figures of the drawings. Thus an additional securing means is thereby provided which helps to rigidly secure these parts in their connected relation and prevents any distortion or loosening of the several parts forming the box or body of the sled.
I am fully aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the claims which are ap pended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the constructions of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim:
1. In a sled of the character set forth, the combination with a body, of body-braces and the connecting runners therefor, each bodybrace comprising a central bar, and kneepieces, said knee-pieces being provided with knees having end-portions registering with the ends of said central bar, and each knee being provided with a cut-away part, and a lower brace secured to the lower surface of said central bar, said lower brace having its end-portions extending into and registering with the cut-away parts of said knees.
2. In a sled of the character set forth, the combination with a body, of bodybraces and the connecting runners therefor, each bodybrace comprising a central bar, and kneepieces, said knee-pieces being provided with knees having end-portions registering with the ends of said central bar, and each knee being provided with a out-away part, a lower brace secured to the lower surface of said central bar, said lower brace having its end-portions extending into and registering with the cut-away parts of said knees, and side-bars secured upon the opposite sides of said central bar and said knees.
3. In a sled of the character set forth, the combination with a body, of body-braces, each body-brace comprising a central bar having beveled ends, and knee-pieces, said knee-pieces being provided with knees having beveled end-portions registering with the beveled ends of said central ba and each knee being provided with a cut-away part, a lower brace secured to the lower surface of said central bar, said lower brace having its end-portions extending into and registering with the cut-away parts of said knees, a downwardly projecting leg connected with each knee, a tenon upon the free end of each leg, runners provided with receiving sockets in which said tenons are ar 'anged, and each knee-piece having an upwardly extending post-like member, against which the sides of said body are arranged.
