Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. ALEX- ANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skiving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1 The invention relates to skiving machines, and more particularly to machines which comprise a rotary cylindrical knife and a cooperating presser foot and feed roll which position the work and feed it against the edge of the knife. 4
It is the object of the invention to provide novel and improved devices for supporting the feed roll so that it may be adjusted to bring its peripher I intoproper relation to the edge of the knife, either in assembling the parts in setting up the machine, or in effecting readjustment to compensate for unequal wear along the periphcry of the roll,
To this end the invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and referred to in the claims.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the construction illustrated therein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing so much of a skiving machine as is necessary to illustrate the application of the present invention thereto and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the axis of the feed roll.
In the drawings the invention is illus trated as embodied in the skiving machine the general construction of Which is indicated in Patent No. 1,029.176. granted June 11, 1912. The cylindrical skiving knife of this machine is indicated'at- 1, and the feed roll which cooperates with the presser foot or gage (not shown) is indicated at 2. The periphery of the feed roll is curved to correspond to the curvature of the knife edge, and the roll is mounted in a supporting head 3 which is pivotallv connected at 4 to a sup porting arm 5. The roll supporting head is free to turn about the pivot 4, and. is heid in be conveniently turned to adjust normal position with its periphery close to the inner edge of the knife by a spring 6 interposed between a lug 7 on the head and the end of an"adjusting screw 8 carriedzby the arm 5. The normal position of the head and fees troll carried thereby is determined by a fixed stop 9 formed on the arm 5 and a cotiperating stop 10 formed on the lug 7, the stops being held in engagement by the spring 6. The arm 5 is secured to a shaft 11 mounted in a carrier (not shown) which may yield to allow the feed roll to move bodily away from the fully disclosed ferred to.
It is essential to the successful and eflicient operation of the machine that the periphery of the feed roll 2 should be parallel to the edge of the knife when the roll is in normal position. In order that the roll may be ac curatelv positioned with relation to the edge of the knife in assembling the parts or in represser foot, as more 1n the patent above restoring the proper relation between the feed roll and knife after the roll becomes Worn by use or in replacing the roll, the feed roll is so mounted in its supporting head that it may be adjusted axially.
In the construction shown, provision is made for the axial adjustment of the roll by mounting the roll to rotate about a stud 12 which is adjustably secured in an arm 13 of the head. The stud is. provided with a flange 14 for engaging one end of the roll, and the roll is held in position upon the stud with its end against the flange by a screw 15 which is screwed into the end of the stud. and is provided with a projecting head engaging the bottom of a bore 16 formed in the roll. The head of the stud is provided with screw threads engaging corresponding threads formed in the arm 13, and the head is slotted so that the stud may the stud and roll axially. The roll is driven through; a short shaft 17 mounted in the arm 18 ofthe head 3, and fitting-within the bore 16 in the end of the roll. This shaft also forms a support for the end of the roll. T e shaft is connected with the roll by a pin'1 the ends of which project into slots formed in the roll. so that the roll rotates With-the shaft while being free to be adjusted axially with relation to the shaft The outer end of the shaft 17- is connected by a universal joint 20 with a shaft 21, which is driven through suitableineehanism, and is so constructed and connected that it does not interfere with the yielding movements of the roll during the. operation of the machine.
If in setting up the machine, or in sub-- stituting one feed roll for another, it is found that the periphery of the feed roll is out of parallel relation with the edge of the knife, as indicate-:1 in Fig. 1, the roll may be adjusted axially by turning the stud l2 until the periphery of the roll is brought into I proper parallel relation with the knife edge. if the Hill is to be renn'r-ietl and a new roll inserted, the arm 18 may be detached from the end of the head 3 by removing the securing bolt 552, so that he shaft 17 may be rc- I Inovcdtog'iveaccess to the retainingscre'w 15. While the invention has been shown and described as embodied in the machine illustrated in the patent above referred to, it will be understood that the invention is not eon- I fined in it application to this maeninc, but may be embodied with advantage in other skiving machint's. It will also be under- I stood that the specific construction and arrangeinent of the parts is not essential to y the broader features of the invention, and
may be varied and modified Without departing therefrom.
Having explained the nature and object I of the invention, and
specifically described I one form of machine in which it may be enibodied, what I claim is l. A skiving machine, having, in eon1bina-' tion, a cylindrical knife, a feed roll having a periphery corresponding in curvature to the curvature of the knife edge, a yielding support for the feed roll, and means for adjusting the roll axially on the support.

A skiving machine, having, in eombination, a cylindrical knife, a supporting arm Within the knife, a roll carrying head pivoted on the arm, fixed stops for determining the position of the head, a spring for supporting the head, a stud axially adjustable in thehea d. and a feed roll mounted on the stud.
A skiving machine, having, in coin-binaiion, a cylindrical knife, a feed roll having a periphery corresponding in curvature to the curvature of the knife, 21 support for the feed roll provided with arms 13 and 18, a stud 12 provided with a head screwed into the arm 13, a shaft 17 mounted in the arm 18 and fitting within a bore 16 in the roll, and devices connecting the roll and shaft.
