PATENTE OCT 181870 nient lil JOSEPH TAFT, 0F ROOKVILLE, UONNGTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 108,406, dated OctoberlS, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLES. i
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same clear, and exact description thereof', which will enableV others skilled in the art to make und use the same, reference being had to the aceon'ilmnying drawing forming part ot this speciiicatiou.`
This invention relates to improvements in tables, and consists in a pair of light niet-al stands, and a folding detachable top, constructed and combined in such away that the top may be taken otf the stands and folded up into convenient shape for transportation.
The said invention is designed to provide simple nud cheap tables for picnics, also for hotels, in which it is sometimes required to sctout tables for unusual numbers of people.
Figure 1 is a side elevation ot' my improved table, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section.
Similar letters et' reference indicate corresponding parts.
I propose to make light metal stands for supporting thc top, by combining the vertical rods or tubes and transverse tubes B G- with any suitable metal bases, D, one to oooh stand.
. 'lhe transverse bar C is made to extend at the top beyond the vertical tubes A, and they are turned npward, as shown at G, to receive the top E, between then1, to prevent it from being moved laterally there- The top is made of long plank, preferably two in number, hinged together, as shown, and they have; notches, F, in the edges for the reception ofthe ver tical parts G, by which, together with bases D, which are arranged to brace the vertical parts A of the stands in the lengthwise direction ot' the table, the table is made sntiiciently strong in that direction for its support, and the lateral bracing is effected by the transverse bars C B, in connection with the post-s.
It will be seen that by a very simple construction an etlicient table, which may be readily put up or taken down, and can be stored away or packed i'u a small space for transportation, is provided.
The top may have any kind of fastening arranged in connection with thc posts forfholding the partstogcther, for instance, a spring bolt, latch bolt, or other similar fastening.4
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stands, composed of the base D and rods or tubes A B C, arranged as described, in combination with the tops, composed of two or more parts hinged together and provided with the notches F, all sub stantially as specified.
JOSEPH TAFT.
