NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLARD AUGUSTUS PICKABID, OF GUSTER, WASHINGTON.
HAME-CLIP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLARD A. PICKARD, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Custer, in the county of l/Vhatconi and 'State of Washington, have invented a new andImproved flame-Clip, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
the tracezwill pull at right angles torits securing bolt, whereby the strain against the animals shoulders will not only be evenly distributed, but splitting of the material forming the trace usually due to angular pull exerted thereon, will be obviated.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides more particularly in the peculiar combinations and arrangements of parts which will be illustrated as a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification, it being a still further object to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved hame clip or coupling applied to a hame section, only a fragmentary portion of the latter being illustrated; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts illustrated in Fig. l but with the attaching part for the trace in section to more clearly illustrate its connection with the stationary part of the clip; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device in the position shown in Fig. 1 but with the harness rings omitted.
In illustrating the application of the improved clip or coupling, a hame section 5 is shown. The improved clip consists of a relatively elongated plate 6 having taperedextremities and which is riveted near its extremities and intermediately of its ends to the front face or flat part of the hame Specification of Letterslatent.

section, as shownat 7. This plate constitutes the stationary part of the clip and is further provided with a rightangular flange 8 projecting rearwardly thereof and engaging the outer edge portion of the hame section. Thus it will appear that instead of weakening the hame section, as is usually done by boring holes through the same transversely where the pull is exerted, I have provided means which will considerably strengthen the hame at the parts where the most pressure is exerted.
The plate 6 isprovided with a vertical rib 9 enlarged outwardly near its ends and apertured for the attachment of the harness reins. The ring or terret 10 may be pr0- vide'd for the reins while the ring 11 is provided as a hold-back ring for the attachment of the breast strap.
In order to provide for the attachment of a trace, the plate 6 is centrally provided with a lateral extension 12 having a reduced neck portion terminating in a spherical member or ball 13 disposed in spaced relation to the outer edge of the hame section. A pair of plates 14, constituting the 1novable part of the clip, are provided with semi-spherical socket portions 15 cooperating to movably envelop the ball 13, and these plates are clamped together by bolts or other suitable fastening means, as indicated by the numeral 16, and the inner sides of the socket portions 15 are apertured to receive the extension 12 therethrough and permit universal and free movement of the movable part of the clip vertically, while horizontal movement thereof is prevented.
The rear extremities of the plates 1a are provided with spaced jaws 17 between which the trace o1- tongue is adapted to be secured through the instrumentality of a bolt or other fastening means 18, and since the movable part is adapted for free play on the spherical member or ball, it will be seen that irrespective of the angle at which the trace is disposed with respect to the hame section, the pull on the securing member 18 will be at right angles at all times and the strain or pressure against the animals shoulders will be equally distributed. In this manner the pulling of the trace against the fastening member or bolt 18 at any other than a right angle will be obviated and cutting of the leather usually forming the trace will be consequently overcome.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is a 1. A hame coupling of the class described, comprising an angular plate designed for attachment vertically to the front portion of a hame section and arranged to engage the adjacent outer portion thereof, said plate having reinforcing ribs located at right angles vertically and horizontally, said horizontal rib terminating in a lateral extension formed with a spherical extremity, and a socket member engaged on the spherical extremity for free vertical movement, said socket member having a trace attaching portion extending rearwardly at all times.
2. A hame coupling of the class described, comprising an angular plate designed for attachment vertically to the front portion of a hame section and arranged to engage the adjacent outer portion thereof, said plate having reinforcing ribs located at right angles vertically and horizontally, said horizontal rib terminating in a lateral extension formed With a spherical extremity, a pair of plates having semi-spherical socket portions enveloping the spherical extremity and having cooperating edge recesses receiving said extension to permit vertical movement of the plates, means for securing the plates together on the spherical extremity at either side of the latter, said plates hav ing spaced rear ends forming jaws, and a trace attaching bolt engaged through the HAYS.
J 3. The combination with a hame section; of an elongated plate engaged with the forward face of the section and secured thereto, a flange formed on the plate and engaging the outer edge of the hame section, said plate further having a rib provided with apertured extremities for the attachment of the harness rings, an outward extension, and a removable trace attaching part connected with the extension and extending rearwardly thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLARD AUGUSTUS PIOKARD.
