To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. lvIAIZn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Gregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Prepay-Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in pro-pay cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a car of this character in which the exit and entrance doors are arranged side by side and independently operated, and a separate step for the entrance'and exit doors arranged to be operated in unison with their respective doors.
Another object of my invention is to provide a. folding step for the doors which when the door has started to open the step moves downwardly very rapidly for a certain distance and then moves the remainder of the distance more slowly. At the same time when the door is being closed, the steps move slowly on their initial. upward movement and move very rapidly to an upward folded position just as the door is closed. This arrangement when the door is being opened allows the step to fold down suiliciently far for a passenger to step on should he squeeze through the door before it is wide open and also allows the step to remain folded in order that a passenger could stand on the same should the door be partially closed, as will be readily understood.
Another object of my invention is to provide a guard rail for the platform of the car which can be swung around into position so as to protect the motorman and prevent anyone getting close to him while the car is moving in one direction and to be used as a guard-rail for the conductor when the car is moving in the opposite direction, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
it still further object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective car of this character having certain details of structure and advantages hereinafter more fully set forth.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the rear platform of a car embodying my invention. The side of this platform is provided with an exit door 2, which is operated by the motorman, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The opposite side of the car is provided with. another exit door 3 and an entrance door 4:. The entrance door, as shown, is of a width considerably greater than that of the door, as Fig. l of the drawing shows. The rear platform of the car and the front platform of the car are provided with an exit door 2 on the same side as the exit door 3. The door 2 on the rear platform is not used when the car is traveling in the direction of the arrow, shown in Fig. 1., as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
The rear platform between the exit door 3 and the entrance door 1 is provided with a standard 5, to which is connected the guard-rail 6, which extends inwardly and is connected to the standard 7, carried by the floor 8 of the platform. Pivotally connected to the guide rail 6 adjacent the standard 7, is a bar 9 having an inner bar 10 telescoping therein and detachably secured to the standard 11 carried by the floor 12 of the body of the car midway between the opening 13, forming the exit and the entrance passages to the car from the platform 1. The inner telescoping bar 10, as above stated, is detaehably secured to the standard 11, and when removed therefrom is swung around upon its pivot 9 and is telescoped outwardly and removably secured to a bracket 14 carried by the front of the platform of the car, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1. Then in this position it will be seen that the guardrails 9 and 6 and the entrance door 4 form a complete compartment for the motorman and when swung around in the position, shown in full lines in Fig. 1, forms a partition for the conductor.
Pivotally secured to the lower face of the guard-rail 6, are two vertically disposed rods 15 and 16 which extend downwardly through the floor 8 of the car and have connected to their lower ends a door operating means, hereinafter more fully described. Just below the guard-rail 6 the rods 15 and 16 are provided with handles 17 and 18, whereby the rods 15 and 16 are oscillated and one handle adapted to operate the entrance door and the other handle the exit door, whereby the doors are independently operated, said handles, as shown, being in easy reach of the conductor.
The entrance door 4 is formed in two sections 19 and 20 hinged together at 21, and the inner end of the section 20 is mounted upon the vertically disposed rod 22, which extends from the top of the entrance opening downwardly through the floor 8 of the car. The outer end of the section 19 of the entrance door is provided at its upper end with a pin carrying a roller which slides in a groove in the upper end of the entrance opening, whereby the oscillation of the rod 22 causes the outer end of the section 20 of the entrance door to move outwardly, folding on the hinge 21, while the inner end ravels inwardly within the groove hereinafter described. This operation is well understood by those skilled in the art and needs no further description or showing.
The exit door 3 is likewise formed in two sections 23 and 24 hinged together at the center at 25. The section 23 is carried by a rod 26, which extends from the top of the car downwardly through the floor 8 and the outer section 24 of the door is provided with a pin and roller traveling in a groove the same as the section 19 of the entrance door and the operation thereof is exactly the same as that of the entrance door heretofore described.
The rods 22 and 26 carrying the exit and entrance doors, as heretofore described, extend through the floor 8 of the car and are rotatably mounted in a bracket 27 carried by the floor of the car. Said shaft 22 below the bracket 27 is provided with an arm 28 rigidly secured thereto and to the outer end of which is pivo-tally connected a link 29, which has its end pivotally connected to an arm 30 carried by the lower end of the rod 16. By this arrangement it will be seen that the oscillation of the rod 16 by the handle 18 will oscillate the rod 22 and open or close the entrance door 4. The rod 26 carrying the exit door 3 likewise extends below the bracket 27 and is provided with an arm 31 to the outer end of which is pivotally connected a link 32, having its inner end pivotally connected to an arm 33, carried by the lower end of the rod 15. The oscillation of the rod 15 of the handle 18 will open and close the exit door, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The rods 22 and 26 carrying the exit and entrance doors above the bracket 27 are provided with bevel gears 34 and 35 meshing with beveled gears 36 and 37. These beveled gears 36 and 37 are carried by shafts 38 and 39, mounted in the bracket 27 and have their outer ends mounted in brackets 40 and 41, carried by the floor or other part of the under side of the platform of the car.
The shaft 38, as will be seen, Fig. 4 of the drawings, through the medium of the beveled gears 34 and 36, is oscillated when the entrance door is opened or closed. The outer end of the said shaft 38 is provided with an arm 42 to which is pivotally connected a link 43, which is of an arc-shape and has its lower end pivotally connected at 44 opposite the entrance 45 carried by the lower face of the entrance step 46. The entrance step 46, as shown, is pivotally connected at 47 to lugs or brackets 48, which form no part of my invention and therefore said step could be mounted in any desired manner. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the rod 22 is in a position with the entrance doors closed the step 46 is as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The oscillation of the rod 22 through the medium of the beveled gears 34 and 36 causes the arm 42 to move upwardly and the step 46 is rapidly moved until the arm 42 has reached a point beyond a horizontal position when the movement of the step will be more gradual until it reaches its normal horizontal position. By this time the entrance door is wide open. The reverse operation of the rod 22 causes the step 46 to move slowly until the arm 42 has passed a horizontal position when the step will rapidly move upwardly until it reaches the vertical position by which time the entrance door completely closes.
The rod 39 has an arm 49 connected there to, said arm carrying a link 50 connected to the exit step 51 in the same manner as the link 43 and the operation is precisely the same as that of the step 46 and therefore needs not be described in detail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A prepay car having a passage, a door for said passage, a folding step for said passage, means connected to said doors for rapidly allowing the step to move downwa *dlv during the first part of the opening operation of the door, and to move upwardly slowly during the first part of the closing of the door.
2. A prepay ear having a passage, a folding step for said passage, and means for rapidly moving the step downwardly during the first part of the movement thereof and means for moving the step slowly during the first part of the upward movement thereof.
3. A. prepay car having a passage, a door for said passage, a folding step for said passage, means for operating said door and means connected to the door operating means for rapidly lowering the step during the first part of the opening of the door and slowly lowering the step during the remainder of the opening operation.
i. A pre-pay car having an entrance and exit passage arranged side by side, a separate door closing each passage, means for independently operating: said door, a folding step for each passage and means connected to the door-operating means for allowing the step to move rapidly downwardly during the first part of the opening operation of the door and to move slowly downwardly during the remaining opening operation of the door.
5. A pre-pay car having an eXit and entrance passage arranged side by side, a partition between the passages, a door for each passage and pivoted adjacent the partition, means for independently operating said doors, a folding step for the exit and en trance passages, means connected to the door operating means for causing the steps to fold downwardly very rapidly for the first part of their movement and to move downward. slowly during the remainder of their movements, substantially as shown and described.

A prepay car having an exit and entrance passage arranged side by side, double doors closing said exit and entrance passages, means for independently operating said doors, a folding step for each passage and means operated by the door operating means for folding the step with its respective door, said means constructed and ar *anged to fold the step downwardly very rapidly during the first part of its movement and slower during the remainder of its downward movement.
7. A prepay car having an entrance and exit passage, arranged side by side, a partition between the said passages, a double door for each passage and pivoted adjacent the partition, means for operating said doors independently of each other, a folding step for each passage, means operated by the door operating means for folding the steps downwardly very rapidly for the first part of the movement of the door-operating means, and slowly lowering the step during the remainder of the movement and means for folding the steps slowly during the first part of the movement of the closing of the doors and rapidly during the remainder of the closing operation.

A pre-pay car having an entrance and exit passage arranged side by side, vertically arranged rods arranged in said passages at the adjoining e of the passages, double doors carried by said rods and inclosing said passages, an. arm carried by the lower end of the said rod below the bottom of the car, meansoperated from the center of the platform of the car and oscillating the rods and operating the doors, a beveled gear carried by the said rods below the bottom of the 'ar, horizontal shafts having beveled gears moving with the firstanentio-ned gears, steps pivoted to the gear opposite the exit and entrance passages, arms carried by the shafts and connected with the steps whereby the steps are siinultaneousty operated with the opening and closing of the exit and entrance doors.

A. pro-pay car havingan exit and entrance passage arranger side by side, a vertical rod extending from the top of the car through the floor thereof adjacent the adjoining edges of the passages, double doors carried by said rods closing the entrance and exit passages, arms carried by the lower ends of the rods below the bottom of the car, vertically disposed oscillating rod. arranged in the center of the platform of the car, means carried by the upper ends of the said rods for oscillating the same, arms carried by the said rods below the bottom of the car, links connecting the said arms with the arms carried by the door carrying rods, beveled. gears carried by the door carrying rods above the arms, shafts horizontally mounted below the bottom of the car and having beveled gears meshing; with the beveled gears of the door-carrying rods, steps hinged to the car, arms carried by the horizontal shafts, links pivoted to the arms and pivotally connected to the steps whereby the oscillation of the door-carrying rods oscillate the horizontal shafts and swing the steps upwardly and downwardly with the opening and closing of the door.

A pro-pay car having entrance and exit passages arranged side by side, vertically disposed rods carried by the car adjacent the adjoining edges of the exit and entrance passages, double hinged doors carried by said rods, arms carried by the rods below the floor of the car, means for operating said arms for oscillating the door carrying shafts for opening and closing the door, steps hinged to the car opposite the entrance and exit entrances, arms operated by the door operating-rods, for swinging the steps upwardly during the closing of the doors and downwardly during the opening of the doors, substantially as shown and described.

A pro-pay car having a door passage, a rod extending from the upper end of the car down through the floor of the car adjacent the passage, a door carried by said rod, an arm carried by the lower end of the rod below the floor, means for oscillating the arm for opening and closing the door, a beveled gear carried by the rod above the arm, a step pivoted to the car opposite the passage, an oscillating; shaft below the car and having a beveled gear meshing with the beveled gear carried by the door operating rod, an arm carried by the shaft an arc-shaped link pivotally connected to the arm and having its outer end pivotally connected to the step in rear of the pivotal connection of the step with the car.
152.- A pre-pay car having an exit 01' entrance passage, a door closing said passage, a rod carried by the door and extending below the car, means for operating the rod for operating the door, a step pivoted to the car opposite the passage, a horizontal shaft driven by the rod carried by the door, an arm carried by the shaft, an arc-shaped link pivotally connected to the arm and having its outer end pivotally connected to the step in rear of the pivotal connection of the step with the car.
13. A pre-pay car having an exit or entrance passage, a door-closing the same, a rod carried by the door and extending below the bottom of the car, means for oscillating the rod for opening and closing the door, a beveled gear carried by the rod, a step pivoted to the car opposite the passage, a beveled gear carried by the rod, a horizontal shaft parallel with the pivot of the step and having a beveled gear meshing with the beveled gear carried by therod carrying the door, an arm extending downwardly and inwardly from the shaft, an arc-shaped link pivotally connected to the arm and having its outer end pivotally connected to the step in rear of the pivotal connection of the step with the car.

A pre-pay car having an exit and entrance passage arranged side by side, a guard-rail extending inwardly between the exit and entrance passage, a second guardrail pivotally connected to the inner end of the first guard-rail and having a telescoping portion adapted to extend in and detachably secured to the standard arranged at the center of the passage between the car and the platform and adapted to be swung around and secured to the front of the car, doors closing the said exit and entrance passage, a folding step for the exit and entrance passages, means for operating the doors of the exit and entrance passages independent of each other and simultaneously folding the step of the respective passages substantially as shown and described.
15. A prepay car having an entrance and exit passage arranged side by side, a guardrail extending from between the two 'passages to the center of the car, a second guard-rail pivoted to the inner end of the first guard-rail and having a telescoping portion adapted to extend rearwardly or forwardly substantially as shown, a double hinged door for both the exit and entrance passages, a rod carried by the adjoining ends of each door and extending below the bottom of the car, an arm carried by the lower end of the shaft, a vertical operating rod pivoted to the inner end of the first mentioned guard-rail and extending through the bottom of the car, a handle for operating said rods, arms carried by the lower ends of the said rods below the bottom of the car, links pivotally connected to the said rods and having their outer ends pivotally connected to the arms carried by the doorcarrying rods, a step pivoted to the car opposite the exit and entrance passages, a beveled gear carried by the door carrying rod above the arms, horizontal shafts carried by the bottom of the car and having beveled gears meshing with the beveled gears of the door-carrying rods, an arm carried by each shaft, links connected to the said arms and having their outer free ends pivotally connected to the respective steps in rear of its pivotal connection with the car.

A prepay car having a guard-rail extending from one side of the center of the platform of the car, door operating levers below said guard-rail and pivoted thereto, a pivoted telescoping guard-rail pivoted to the inner end of the first named guard-rail and extending rearwardly and dividing the exit passage between the car and platform and adapted to be swung around to engage the front of the car to divide the platform substantially as shown and described.
17. A prepay car having exit and entrance doors side by side, a guard rail extending from a point between the doors to the cen ter of the car, door operating levers carried by the guard-rail and pivoted thereto and a pivoted telescoping guard-rail pivoted to the inner end of the first named guard-rail and extending rearwardly and dividing the passage between the car and platform and adapted to be swung around to engage the front of the platform, substantially as shown and described.
