UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. J EFFREYS AND WILLIAM H. CREAHEN, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OI-IIO.
SECONDARY CLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1914.
Application filed October 22, 1912. Serial No. 727,253.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VVILLIAM M. JEF- FREYS and WILLIAM H. CnEA'i-IEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Secondary Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in electrical recording instruments and more particularly to time recording instruments, and the object of our invention is to provide a novel and efficient form of secondary clock movement.
A further objectof our invention is to so construct the secondary clock as to cause it to move a chart through a predetermined angle at each impulse which it receives from the master clock. And a further object of our invention is to provide a recording mech anism of the above described character which may be employed as a recorder for steam, water and vacuum gages and also for recording temperatures, humidity and the like.
lVith these and other objects in view, our invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and then specifically pointed out in the claim which is attached to and forms a part of this application.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is afront elevation of our clock movement; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The preferred embodiment of our improved recorder includes spaced front and rear plates 10 and 11 secured to each other at their corners by spacer pins 12. Mounted between the upper ends of the plates 10 and 11, is a solenoid 13 having a plunger 14, the lower end of which is pivoted as shown at 15 to the intermediate portion of a lever 16. One end of this lever is pivoted to a lug 17 extending inwardly from the rear plate 11 and the opposite end of the lever extends through an opening formed in the front plate and is pivotally connected to a link 19. A bracket 20 is secured to the outer face of the front plate 10 opposite the center of the solenoid 13 and disposed parallel with the longitudinal axis of the plunger 14, said bracket being formed with a laterally extending ear .the solenoid. For instance,
having a vertical slot 21 through which extend spaced pins 22 carried by the upper end of the link 19, the link being mounted for reeiprocatory movement between the ears of the brackets. Swingingly mounted upon the lower end of this link, is a pawl 23 and secured to the linkand bearing against the outer face of the pawl, is a leaf spring 24.
Journaled in suitable alined bearings formed in the front and rear plates 10 and 11, is a shaft 25 carrying a ratchet gear 26 upon its forward end and a beveled gear 27 immediately at the rear of the ratchet gear. This shaft and ratchet gear are so positioned and proportioned that the pawl 23 is normally held in engagement with one of the teeth of the ratchet gear by the spring 24: in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. It will therefore be apparent that each time the solenoid is energized by the passage of a current through the master clock or any other device with which our register is operated, the plunger will be drawn upwardly, raising the pawl 28 and turning the ratchet gear 26 to a distance equal to the space between the adjacent teeth. Upon the decnergization of the solenoid, the link and its pawl fall by gravity to normal position.
A vertical shaft 28 is also journaled in suitable bearings carried by the front and rear plates and is provided at its upper end with a beveled gear 29 which meshes with the beveled gear 27. Mounted upon the lower portion of this shaft 28, is a worm gear 30 which meshes with a worm wheel 31 carried by a second transversely extending shaft 32, which shaft is also journaled in the front and rear plates 10 and 11. The forward end of this shaft 32 extends considerably in advence of the front plate 10 and has its free end threaded. The shaft immediately adjacent the threaded portion is provided with an annular shoulder 33 and a. milled binding nut 3 1 is adapted to be threaded upon the end of the shaft to clamp a dial plate or other suitable chart 35 against the shoulder 33 to revolve with the shaft. By means of the reduction gears above described, the movement of the ratchet gear is transmitted to the chart or dial and these gears may be so proportioned as to turn the dial through any desired angle through each impulse of if the dial is arranged to move through an angle of fifteen minutes for each impulse and the solenoid receives an impulse once a minute, the dial will make one complete revolution in twentyfour hours.
It will of course be understood that the above described mechanism may be inclosed in any suitable casing or that minor changes in details of construction, may be made if desired, without in the slightest degree departing from the spirit of our invention.
The instrument may be employed for recording steam pressure in a steam system, if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device of the character described in-- cluding a casing having front and rear plates, parallel shafts rotatably mounted in the casing a chart carried by one of the shafts and spaced from the outer face of the front plate, a train of gearing operatively connecting said shafts, a solenoid interposed between the front and rear plates of the easing, a lever pivoted by one end to a support on the inner face of the rear plate and intermediate its length to the plunger of the solenoid, a bracket secured to the front plate of the casing opposite the center of the solenoid and provided with a laterally extending ear disposed parallel with the longitudinal axis of the plunger of the solenoid, said car being provided with a vertically disposed slot, av link slidably mounted on one side of the ear, spaced pins extending laterally from the link and passing through the slot in the ear, said linl; being pivoted intermediate its length to the free end of the lever, a pawl pivotally mounted on the free end of the link, a spring having one end thereof secured to the link and its other end spanning the pivotal connection between the pawl and link and bearing against said pawl, and a ratchet wheel keyed upon the adjacent shaft and adapted to be driven by engagement with the pawl.
In testimony whereof we allix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
