Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 6, 1914.
Application inea January 1s, i912. sei-iai No. 671,015.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 1WILLIAM C. Giri'- sci-Iow, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Littleton, in the county -of Arapa hoe Yand State of Colorado, have invented new l'and useful Improvements in Combined Levels and Plum'bs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a plumb and level device intended for use by carpenters, mechanics and the like whereby horizontal, perpendicular and intei'niediate lines can be quickly and accurately obtained.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character so fas to be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient and reliable in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a Weighted index device having a plurality of hands, one of which is used for obtaining the level and viewed through an opening in the top of the stock of the device, and the other or others for obtaining plumb or other inclined lines, and arranged to be viewed through the sides of the stock, the side index hands being movable over graduated rings to indicate the degrees.
Vith these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a side view of the instrument with intermediate portions broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view with a portion of one of the side strips removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4L is a vertical transverse sectional view drawn on an enlarged scale and taken centrally through the device. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the compound index. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the top cover glass.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the stock or bar of the instrument which, at its center, is provided with a central chamber 2 in which is arranged the index B This index comprises a metal body 3 provided with fa main index hand 4 and side secondary index hands `5, there being a pivot shaft 6 extending from one side to the other jand formed at its ends into sharp p'oints or journals 7, the body 3 being cupped out at 8 for receiving the bearings 9 for the journals. These bearings are screws carried by bracket-s 10 suitably secured to the stock A, the screws having their 'ends hollowed out to receive the points of the pivot shaft 6. The bottom of the body 3 of the compound index is formed with 'a depending lug` or tongue 11 to which is attached a weight 12, tire weight being chambered out at its top for receiving the lug, which latter is connected with the weight by a pintle 13 passing through the lug` and the sides of the weight. By means of this weight, the index 'device B will always assume a vertical position so that the hands thereof will indicate the position of the stock with respect to the plumb line.
The chamber 2 of the stock has top and bottom openings 14e and 15 disposed vertically in line with the main hand Ll and these Openings are covered by glass plates 16 that are each provided with a central index line 17, the glass plates heilig set into the stock A. and secured in place by retaining` plates 18 that have openings 19 through which the index lines 17 can be observed. By having top and bottom openings, the instrument can be reversed so that either side can act as the top. The chamber 2 is opened at its top to permit the secondary index hands to be discerned and these hands move over graduated rings or dials 20 divided into degree marks so that any angle perpendicular or otherwise to the horizontal can be noted and one or the other hand 5 will be always within view.
In the present instance, the stock A is composed of a central section 21 and side sections 22 secured to the central section by screws 23. The side sections have circular openings 211 for exposing the weighted index device and these openings are covered by glass plates 25 having their vertical edges set into grooves in the stock, or in any other well known manner. Set into the sides of the central section are rectangular plates 2G that have circular openings 27 to accommodate the device B and the rings 20 are secured to these side plates 26, the plates being secured to the main section 2l by screws 2S.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation Will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to Which the invention appertains, and While I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device Which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made When desired as are Within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is 1. An instrument of the class described comprising a stock having a chamber opening through its side and top Jfaces, transparent coverings for the chamber openings, a Weighted index arranged Within the casing and provided with a central hand and a side hand, a pivot shaft for said index, bearings in which the ends of the shaft are journaled, and a graduated ring secured to the stock concentric With the index pivot for cooperation with the side hand, the covering for the top openings being provided with an index line for use in conjunction With the central hand.
2. An instrument of the class described comprising a stock having a chamber opening through its side face and its top and bottom faces, a transparent covering for the side opening, transparent coverings for the top and bottom openings provided With index lines, a Weighted index arranged Within the casing and provided With a central hand for use in connection With the index lines of the top and bottom openings and with a side hand, a pivot shaft upon Which the index is mounted, bearings provided upon the stock in which the ends of the said shaft are rotatably mounted, and a graduated ring provided upon the stock concentric with the index pivot for cooperation with the side hand.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
